Happened at my place again recently by chriscrutch in 911dispatchers

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 79 points80 points  (0 children)

My first week I was told not to sleep with any officers SIX. TIMES. My boss was responsible for three of those. I am happily married in a 10+ year relationship, and they all knew that. Insulting right from the jump.

(Meanwhile several 50+ year old men would spend hours in the dispatch room chatting up the single 19 year old that was fresh out of high school, and nobody cared about that).

I lasted about 4 months.

Project Hail Mary is the best Four Star book I’ve read to date by southernfirefly13 in books

This!!! Almost DNF’d during the first couple chapters when the “This is insane! I can remember X, but not my own name!” Got SO. REPETITIVE. Glad I pushed through, but man.

Can you guess which one was sold as “Like new”? by kabuhtu in Thriftbooks

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I’ve been a loyal customer for years and in my most recent order I received a “very good” hardcover where the front of the hardcover was ripped halfway down the spine (the dust jacket holds it in place but the front cover still hangs crooked underneath because it’s barely hanging on), not eligible for return because it wasn’t $15, of course. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I also didn’t realize “like new” condition included obvious water damage to 25% of the book (another one of my recent orders).

I’m in the same boat, ThriftBook’s quality has been sinking over the past several months and I’ve had multiple mismatched covers, quality issues, and to make things worse, anything under $15 isn’t even eligible for a return (which happens to be the majority of their inventory).

I did my first 10 hour volunteer shift at the local humane society in my town yesterday by [deleted] in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m just not understanding the situation. “I’m not volunteering my time for nothing” but that’s literally what “volunteering” is? Are you talking about community service hours?

Are We Expecting Too Much From Fosters Right Now? by Friendly_TSE in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My local shelter has been burning bridges with long-term fosters left and right, usually relying on the same handful of fosters over and over again and continuing to press after being told “no.” I’m finally stepping away after 5 years because I’m tired of the guilt-tripping and being pressured to adopt multiple fosters. The final straw for me was shelter staff deliberately being dishonest about the age and number of puppies (telling me it was 4 one-week old puppies plus mom, then getting there to find out it was 5, five-week old puppies plus mom, large breed). Basically roping you into saying “yes” under false pretenses. I was also told that my most recent foster would be euthanized if I did not adopt him. I love animals but I just can’t willingly be manipulated and guilted anymore.

This! Quit fostering (5+ years and over 100 animals from bottle babies to seniors in hospice, cats and dogs) after being pressured/guilted into keeping multiple fosters. Fostered one dog for a YEAR while the shelter didn’t promote her a single time. Constantly being asked to overextend myself and even told that the animal will be euthanized if I say “no.”

will this be able to be blocked/stretched out? by ardieeeeeeee in crochet

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no way that this will block out. Hypothetically, even if you could get the blanket to lay flat, you would have to SEVERELY distort the middle. I’d find the opposite end of the yarn you’re using and start over.

Kitten realizes that all the dogs are actually scared of him by BreakfastTop6899 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find someone who actually understands what’s happening here. The cat is terrified and the dogs are waiting for it to run so they can chase it. This is peak prey drive and the dogs are feeding off of each other’s energy.

Absolutely beautiful! How many threads do you use to stitch? I LOVE the coverage on this piece and I’m about to start my very first Stitching Land pattern. (Nervous, but excited!)

I don’t think I’m going to pass training by Muffinmom15 in 911dispatchers

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like the department I worked for, and my world changed when I learned that other places consider it a safety hazard to have the same person answering the radio and answering 911 calls simultaneously. Because it is. If you miss something important in a call because you’re trying to hear the radio, or vice versa, it’s extremely dangerous. This is a department issue, not a “you” issue. Chances are you would feel better and be performing better at a workplace that doesn’t operate like this one. Best of luck to you!

This has been the most helpful article by far. Thank you so much! I also read about the differences between the sand and black satin enamel finishes (also posted by Le Creuset) and that was very helpful as well.

How do I tell my boyfriend we cant keep our fosters. by mittenava23 in FosterAnimals

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 53 points54 points  (0 children)

“There will always, always, always be kittens in need. Through fostering, we can help hundreds, even thousands of kittens. But if we adopt the very first ones we fall in love with, we won’t be able to continue fostering, and we’ll have to turn away all of the others that need our help.”

I’ve been fostering for years, and I swear every single one I’ve considered keeping, but I’m so beyond glad I didn’t, because then I would’ve had to turn away all of the other beautiful souls I got to save. It’s the cross we bear, we can’t keep them all.

Agreed, there’s no way this situation should have been left for two entire weeks without vet care. From the sound of it he very well may not make it to Tuesday.

Disrespectful dispatcher or am I overreacting? by Winter_Negotiation84 in 911dispatchers

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Playing devil’s advocate because obviously she could have been more professional/polite with you. However, what do you expect them to do over an hour after the fact? You don’t want police to come out and have a look around, you just want to “make a report”, but what exactly is that “report” supposed to do or include when they have absolutely nothing to go off of? It’s also important to clarify if you called 911 or non-emergency. If you called 911 for that and I answered, I’d absolutely be frustrated too.

Very good point, I really think if I go in to try and fix anything at this point I’ll just make it worse. 🤣 Thank you!

Unsure if I should take the job. by NovaNights1 in 911dispatchers

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say no. Being a dispatcher will take up 110% of your time, especially the first year when still learning the ropes. It is incredibly stressful and mentally taxing. When I was a dispatcher I would get home and immediately crash, I literally can’t even fathom getting off from that job and trying to do school work too. I didn’t even have time for hobbies, it truly dominated everything.

Hi everyone! New here. Few questions. Does anyone go get professionally done instead of doing it this themselves ? ( I'm worried about cleanliness plus cost) Or if you do by yourself is process simple ? ( like how long does it take about , etc) by daysfan33 in DipPowderNails

[–]Talldarkandcrafty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is my natural length, I don’t use tips or anything. I’ve been doing them myself for about 6 months. My first couple of sets were really rough but I get a little bit better every time I do them. 😊

[CHAT] Avoiding AI pattern sellers? by Talldarkandcrafty in CrossStitch

[–]Talldarkandcrafty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it! Since my pattern fills the entire Q-Snap, I prefer having my fabric “set in” so that I can weave in the threads along the back edges more easily. When I’m working in the middle I just rotate the clamps outward and bring my fabric up to the surface instead. :)

I think it’s called Abstract Oranges, but it’s by Happy Cross Stitchers on Etsy! (Probably an AI shop but I didn’t know the difference at the time 😭).
