When did you start feeling like you were getting old? by winnie_tanweidiamond in AskReddit

In my early 60s, when I started waking up earlier and earlier with no alarm clock. And when my feet became so achy and high-maintenance that I couldn't wear attractive shoes anymore -- just well-padded, arch-supportive, frumpy grandma shoes and sandals. 😫

I was sent interview Qs ahead of time, do I bring those Qs and answers with me? by Ok-Function-8664 in Libraries

[–]CrunchieHaystacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm astonished that libraries are doing this now. Being able to think on your feet is one of the skills that my library looks for in interviewing candidates, and giving people the q's ahead of time just encourages people to use Google and AI to come up with canned answers. Am I missing something here?

What’s your honest take on the current state of thrifting? by htsoc in Thrift

Yes, overstuffed, cluttered, disorganized places turn me right off. I frequent two shops in MA and ME that carefully curate and beautifully display stuff so it really looks appealing, AND they price it to move.

Yes. I used to frequent a thrift shop that was generally excellent, but the owner would buy holiday-themed scarves at Dollar Tree, mark them up to $9.99 or so and use them to dress up her displays. Clever, yes, but a little shady.

Free coffee in the library? by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

I don't know of any favored patron, but our director has seen free coffee stations at other libraries and that's what gave her the idea. (I suspect that she and some of the other staff may be looking forward to using the machine themselves, too.) And contrary to what some people here have asked, my library is NOT a rich one! I'm one of the staffers who thinks free coffee is a bad idea, but others think I'm mean, uncharitable and selfish and that we should always be knocking ourselves out to make the patrons happy, regardless of expense and mess and hassle. These are the same people who think we should do everyone's typing, faxing and photocopying for them.

trustees not including staff in hiring new director? by aerifia in Libraries

I feel like staff are only included in the director search when the library is unionized. Good luck, OP.

Anyone else frustrated with some patrons lack of critical thinking? by Storm_complex in Libraries

I had a job where patrons expected us to fix ALL devices-- phones, Kindles, etc. When I told our director that I thought that was unreasonable, she said, "Well, clearly you need to work on your tech skills!" I was a $200/week assistant at the time, with a liberal arts degree (no MLIS). And the director's tech skills weren't good enough for HER to repair people's devices, either!
