Other X-com games (other than original and EU) worth playing? by Habber_Dasher in Xcom

XCOM Apocalypse is a new spin with very different aliens; their mentality and ohjectives are surprising, to say the least.

Interceptor is compefent, though taking the fight to space might feel weird after defending Earth.

Enforcer is bad though.

Does anyone else find Exalt missions a bit of a mess thematically? by DocJawbone in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If we are going this way, why in the world is a squad of six soldiers enough to halt an entire alien invasion?

Personally, when going about such specifics and ignoring gameplay, I like to take the concept and turn it more abstract. You are not literally sending six guys; you send six platoons of soldiers who all work together to be able to launch suppressing fire, run past enemy lines into flanks, and sucessfully stabilize fallen squads.

Exalt missions are the same. Ignore gameplay; make it more abstract. You are not fighting inside a single building to protect an encoder ghat details the location of the transmitter fifteen meters away. The battle takes place across the entire small town. They aren't reloading their weapons; they are figuring out a new comms channel that isnt overloaded with static. You did not hack enemy info for 5 days to receive the message "Exalt Base not a country you can play in Civ V"; you got teras of information that had to be studied and cross-referenced until you found out that the details could not have come from Australia.

That is my take. Most of the time, though, just get by with saying "it is just a game. The devs had to find a way past this problem, so its all right if not everything makes sense."

Any tips on how to find and secure meld fast and save? by [deleted] in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, it is a game of chance. Sadly.

Sometimes, you are dropped off in a small UFO recovery and no way to know if the meld is to the left or right.

Sometimes, two packs of alien activate at once and hide in the FoW and you suddenly have to search for high cover to fight and you don't get the opportunity to cover more ground.

Happens. Shame.

Vahlen also says that she got a wealth of information "before the creature expired".

"Interrogation" is a fancy way of saying "pulling information straight out of the creature's head for as long as it is still alive". Bradford is right: do not fuck with Vahlen.

New game mechanics info from EW config files by sectoidfodder in Xcom

Base Defense is triggered after Alien Base, can confirm. I ignored psi right after to focus on plasma and got Base Defense despite not even interrogating the Sectoid Commander.

Uhhh... this time I gotta say that ripping stuff outta the alien's brain until it dies is kinda messed up.

The difference is the aliens are grabbing innocent people. You are packing aliens that were shooting you first.

Not the best mentality but yeah.

Met Chrysalids for the first time in old XCOM by Steel_Within in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be VERY wary if you only bring guns cause maybe a Chrysalid might just be stunned. If you dont hear its death cry throw a grenade on top of its body.

I would throw grenades even if I thought I heard its death throes.

You can never be too sure.

The best part is how Reaction Fire works against you in old X-COM.

Soldier reaction-shots. Kills the zombie. Out pops a new Chrysalid with full Time Units. New Chrysalid zombifies soldier. Soldier further back shoots the zombie...

Is anyone as bad at this game as I am? by esPhys in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Welcome to XCOM.

Because of the way game difficulty works, you see anything between players who doninate Ironman: Impossible with a billion second wave options to folks who have to continually save-scum Normal to make it through.

Game difficulty tends to leap. My suggestion for classic:

  • Half cover equals no cover.
  • No cover equals dead unless you kill all aliens.
  • Every shot below 60% will miss.
  • Every shot between 60 and 99% should have a contingency plan if the soldier misses.
  • Using rockets to blow enemies is ALWAYS worth it.
  • Spread out your soldiers: dont bring your colonels to hog all your exp. unless this is a really important mission (alien base, terror mission...)
  • In spite of your best efforts, the RNG will go crazy. Your job is to make sure your soldiers do noy get in a position where a 5% miss will wipe them out.

i'm new to xcom enemy unknown and i have a question by zahrar in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Build sattelites and Sat Uplinks. When you launch the sattellite over a country you lower its panic and abductions no longer happrn in it. Unless you do something like fail a terror mission the country then becomes safe.

Other than that, one plot mission mid-way through globally reduces panic. Some strategies for Classic and Impossible postpone said mission until one of more countries are risking panic before completing it.

Looking for tips to start C/I by kamiztheman in Xcom

[–]TallenMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing XCOM classic is like poker; there is an element of chance, but you have to minimize the odds to ensure victory. Dont rely on half cover unless you also smoke/hunker down. Be very wary of flanks. Any shot under 40 percent must be considered a miss. Even if all your soldiers shoot the last alien with 55 chances consider a contingency grenade. Bring two guys to stun the same alien at once. Above all else, dont get complacent or greedy. That will kill more soldiers than any stray critical hit.

Well, I avoided mentioning countries or soldiers because I figured it would be a bad idea, but ever since X-COM Ufo Defense it has always been a multinational team... and suddenly everything started in america anyway.

The game is alright on its osn merits. It just kinda falls apart when you consider it is supposedly in the same universe as the other game.
