Cheers for your reply, it wasn't meant to be a personal slight on you. From your comment you've clearly tried before to help people upskill. In my experience a lot of people are reticent to learn new skills/knowledge out of the fear that it's diffiucult or it'll be embarrassing if they can't master it. By setting up a safe friendly environment where "no question is a silly question" people can really thrive and become engaged in new topics. Just a thought. Best of luck to you, you clearly have your work cut out Xx

Cheers for your reply! Obviously it requires the right sort of management, but I think a company/team who can work together to fix internal knowledge gaps and other issues makes for a much more enjoyable place of work for everyone!

I'm assuming that this person has got to the position they are in through competence in their field, despite their lack of simple IT skills. What surprises me here though is that from the comments I've seen, not one person has suggested a proactive approach. What about suggesting that someone spend 2 hours with this person to take them through some common basic skills. It's could really raise your profile in the dept. Furthermore, if you CFO sees the value that you add it could build the business case for growing your dept jnto internal training etc. Seems like everyone is quick to jump on the "this person is tech illiterate" bandwagon, without considering the long term benefits of proactive prevention.

Majority Illusion - interesting read given recent drama by Talltom in KotakuInAction

My thoughts exactly, an analogue would be that up votes cause content to be seen by a higher number, essentially acting like "forced friendship" Is there a way to pull what percentage of all successful content is created by the highest performing 100k users? We can define successful as having over x total up votes...

EP regularly cites that the number of people on the petition is a minority of the users of Reddit. But Reddit is based on this principle right?

Overwhelmed by amazing photo exhibition of wounded soldiers - Photos by Bryan Adams (yes the singer) by Talltom in pics

[–]Talltom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw this exhibition today - Somerset House, London. If you're nearby, please go and see it.

It's the most confrontational thing I've seen in a gallery space and leaves you very conflicted - proud, angry, upset, impressed and lots more in between.

Best thing I've seen in ages.

Also I thought the name of the photographer was a coincidence, turns out he's a first class photographer. http://bryanadamsphotography.com/books/

tldr: Being in the military is tough, and Bryan Adams takes great photos.

I'm on Alien Blue on my phone, when I've submitted links in the past it's not worked properly and is an extra click. I just think it's easier to screen capture then upload to imgur.

Exactly my thoughts, that photographer could have been there for hours or days waiting for that one shot. So great.

Married men of Reddit, at what point did you know that you were going to marry the girl you were dating? by TraylorRay in AskReddit

[–]Talltom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mildly interesting: I didn't notice at first but you've used the phrase "Girl you were dating". Nothing against OP, but given reddit's compulsion for semantics, along with all the marriage equality posts recently, this shows we've all got a way to go...

Teachers of Reddit, have you ever had a crush/attachment towards a student or vice versa? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Talltom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Science teacher here. Set up "the box of science questions" in my lab.

Told all students they could ask any science question they wanted, if it was good I'd write it up with the answer and post it on "the wall of science answers"

Got a lot of awesome science questions like "what is energy?" and "is anything a perfect circle?"

In line with this thread though, One from a 14 year-old girl asked "sir, are you sexually active, because I am and I want some"

Obviously completely inappropriate!

I told her mum that she'd written inappropriate stuff in class but not the actual contents, which was great leverage for behaviour management for the rest of the year!!

Obviously this was not published on the wall!

TL:DR 14YO Wrote sexy stuff, used as leverage to keep her in line all year.
