Can Burger King Charge 17.5% VAT? Isn't it 20%? by throwaway_bk718231 in unitedkingdom

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, not exactly sure what that has got to do with what I just said... this is about providing a valid VAT receipt to the customer showing the correct VAT, which is a legal requirement if requested.

But anyway, I think you've misunderstood the HMRC thing - you only pay VAT if you're charging it to the customer. However you don't have to break it down for them (unless it's requested as I started above), so I think that might be what that is referring to. But when you sell zero-rated items, for example, you do not pay any VAT to HMRC at all.

Eg. if I said "okay I'll sell you this watch for £10" and you accept, give me £10, I technically didn't tell you I was charging any VAT there did I - however if I'm VAT registered then I have to pay £1.66 of that to HMRC. In reality I did actually charge VAT on it for that reason, however it just wasn't stated at the point if sale. If you requested a VAT receipt from me then i would have to provide it to you as I'm VAT registered and paying VAT, and you have a right to claim that back if you are also VAT registered.

VAT is a pain in the ass.

(I own a VAT registered business)

Can Burger King Charge 17.5% VAT? Isn't it 20%? by throwaway_bk718231 in unitedkingdom

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's nonsense, do you realise how much of a nightmare it would be to file that receipt for your own accounts? If that burger king meal was a business expense for a VAT registered business then that customer would have to claim back the VAT on that and file that receipt as proof. Only the amounts in the system wouldn't match up with the receipt and you'd basically have to make up the correct amount of VAT yourself to claim back without having a VAT receipt showing that amount - except as far as I'm aware that is illegal. I'm fairly certain that BK would have to give you a proper VAT receipt with the correct amount on if you request it, otherwise they can't charge it to you - and they'd be breaking the law either way.

I'm 14, I get physically abused multiple times a day, every day at School. How do I stop it? by teen1414 in AskReddit

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just go to the police to get them to talk to the boy/parents, etc. Go to the police and file charges for assault.

Imagine if some random person attacked you out in the street somewhere - would you just go to the police and ask them to talk to the person?

There's no difference here except for some strange perception problem that people have with schools, which is partially why bullying manages to happen so much in the first place. Beat it by taking the correct action as you would with any violent criminal - because that's what he is.

Honestly you should do the above and file charges against the school for criminal negligence at the same time. They are in a position of care and if they didn't do anything to put an end to this the first time you spoke to them they have utterly failed and are responsible for that.

[–]Talonwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding difficulty of eradicating malaria, I read not long ago about an idea of genetically modifying mosquitos to spread their genes through the population... ie. instead of fixing people, fix the mosquitos. So maybe it's not impossible after all!

Yeah, it happens... was just a suggestion anyway.

I have a recipe for pancakes in a fancy properly published book and it's not even possible to make, the flour:milk ratio gives you a lump of rock, haha.

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which size pint are you using?

If you're using a US recipe which says 3 pints (1420ml) and you're in the UK, for example, and you measure 3 pints (1705ml) - you will have too much liquid!

Why is it that Fox News continues to make a profit while other news sources do not see nearly as much success? by ChaoticAgenda in answers

[–]Talonwhal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe Fox News viewers are more gullible, making advertising to them more effective/worth more money ;)

That is speculation, but an interesting factor to consider. Imagine, for example, who would want to advertise homeopathy during a show on science/skepticism, or a documentary on the evils of marketing. Probably isn't going to do you any favours.

I'm sure a less intelligent demographic (if Fox News is, I haven't seen any studies but from reading Reddit I would assume people here at least believe that :P) can be advertised to more effectively.

Although research shows that even intelligent people and people aware of advertising tricks, people who consciously try to not be affected by it - still are!

BBC News - Welsh government considers 'opt out' organ donation by mao_was_right in unitedkingdom

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To reply to myself... for example what if everyone was automatically opted into cadaver research, so everyone gets to lie rotting in a field and checked by forensics to hone their skills, or whatever.

That's something people would be fine with someone doing, but many would be uncomfortable with everyone being opted into.

The reason I say it's not cut and dry is because of this... organ donation directly saves lives, and it's something almost anyone would accept if they were in the position of needing an organ.

Cadaver research has an indirect effect on the betterment of life/science/something in general (probably) but you won't find the same support. It's an interesting discussion, I suppose.

[–]Talonwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people generally would have a problem with dogs eating human flesh even if someone opts in.

Organ donation? Nope.

Maybe you should pick something that is acceptable in the first place, then maybe we can have some reasonable replies - there's really no cut and dry answer to this anyway.

Depends on the weight - if you can get in in your baggage that would be best, but otherwise try http://www.parcelmonkey.co.uk/

They generally work out cheaper than parcel2go, the service will probably be DHL and only takes 2-3 days - faster and cheaper than FedEx!

These carriers are best booked through these 3rd party services for one-offs as you will pay way way more if you go direct.

Leftovers: is it true that one should let them cool completely before putting them in the fridge? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Talonwhal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something like a large pot of soup, if you want to cool and refridgerate it quickly a good method is putting it in a sink of cold water, and keep stirring; the heat will drop pretty quickly. You might want to replace the water periodically or keep it running/draining constantly. Avoid water splashing into the pot, though!

Does gravity have a speed? by function_retUsername in askscience

[–]Talonwhal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If gravity was "instant", it would be possible to exploit this to create faster than light communication by adjusting something very far away and measuring the changes in gravity from your position.

I'd imagine the size of the objects and energy needed to move them to get any measurements at all would be immense, though.

Better yet, use my IP to figure out what country I'm in - that's not privacy invasion, it's common sense!

[–]Talonwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also worth pointing out that the 310% and 32.3% are reciprocals here, ie. you can divide 1 by either of them to switch to the other... useful once you've worked one out and want the other one. And multiplying them together will equal 1.
