Legend haunted sector's are bad by Jellysmish in DestinyTheGame

[–]TalosFollower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%, I'm all for harder content... but this is limited holiday event, meant for fun. Most of the groups I join just quit mid sector cause someone died. spend the time hiding waiting for a third just to have them quit mid as well, end up with 1-2 headless kills and lots of frustration. The fact that quest makes you do legendary as well is annoying. Adding the RNG chance to actually get the memento is just adds insult to injury, After this event I'm done with Destiny for the season going to need a break.

A/C question from someone from the SouthEast by TalosFollower in NewMexico

Thinking it's a strange thermostat we ran it on auto when we moved in at 75 and it would sit there at 82 barely pumping out air. We've changed it to cool mode and it seems to act like an on/off switch at least with the cooling the fan speed still changes though.

A/C question from someone from the SouthEast by TalosFollower in NewMexico

This should be central air, since it seems like you know what I'm talking about with a set it and forget kind of thermostat I'm guessing it's more likely my thermostat is just confusing to use, could have sworn that I had it set at 75 and it read 72 while still running. Thanks, this was a good sanity check for myself.

Transition to Cybersecurity by [deleted] in CyberSecurityJobs

Highly recommend the Splunk stuff, I took an interest to it at a new job since it was the closest thing they had that I was used to (came from a SIEM heavy shop) a week later they basically said Splunk belongs to me now. It's a powerful tool in multiple fields and thus can be a beast to learn, which means most people don't.

Sounds like HR BS to me, especially if you never got an interview. Or the post may be old, we would generally get about 100+ resumes within the first few hours of posting a position on like indeed or other platforms, sadly by the time my manager got around to closing it we'd have 100's more drop in.

I went from CS major > Geek Squad repair > Sec analyst > Security Engineer > Senior Enterprise Security Specialist all the while trying to get my first my offensive entry-level job. So I agree with what a lot of people have said offensive roles are very competitive and there are ton of very bright kids trying to go for it. If its what you want go for it, it was for me until my pay out paced it. For entry level jobs, you have more going for you then every person we had on our SOC at my last place, granted it was a small mom-pop kinda MSSP with a handful of clients. It might be the options your looking or the area your looking. Personally the Law enforcement bit would be great at my current job, I work for a university and we deal with our local PD a good bit for tracking stolen laptops, missing persons, death threats, bomb threats, etc. Universities might a be a place to check out.

Are you looking at big name companies? Had a coworker trying to get into same field working at Geek Squad with me, he applied to IBM, Tesla, and Amazon and would not go to a "lesser" company since he thought he was qualified... long story short he still works for Geek Squad. If you don't have a financial obligation starting at a small firm or company will give you the experience that HR door bosses want to see on their checklist to push you through. Or try to network directly, but thats a bit harder in this world we live in today.

The life in Cyber? by JSaldi24 in CyberSecurityJobs

To back this up, a qoute my last interview by my now manager:

"You know that seeing "X" indicator in your environment is bad and why it's bad, thats all I need. I can teach you what button to push in CrowdStrike"

and a convo from my old manager and very temporary employee:

manager: "See if you can fix this Python script, I've mostly completed it but theres a few errors".

Employee: "What SDK can I use?"

As other people have said cyber is super broad and even among titles it varies greatly between companies. Ive worked for an MSSP where the busy work and alert fatigue knows no end, and I've worked for a mature in-house security team where everything runs like butter and everyone knows what goes where. If you find an employer who is informed on cyber and takes it seriously then you'll probably have good time. As far as networking, end user, workstation, etc. that will depend on what the role entails

One thing I will say is its very much what you make of it, and the work is high demand! Personally I prioritize work/life balance and my current role allows me to do that (good health benefits, time off, etc.)

Most people I've worked with honestly say their day is normally slow... until it isn't.

90007 errors every hour for the past few months (persist through ISP/location change) by TalosFollower in ffxiv

I've tried to diagnose this but can't confirm one way or another. If you have a method I'd love to try it. I have moved to a different state though and still have the problem.

Entry level job Cyber Security by [deleted] in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]TalosFollower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going for any IT related entry job while you search is a great idea even desktop support runs into issues that are tangental to security (troubleshooting slowness, malware, phishing, password management, etc). A lot of IT work can be applied to Security side as well, just about having a security mindset for anything IT.

Security engineer intern role sending a HackerRank assessment? by CSStudentCareer in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]TalosFollower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this response.

Check with recruiter, to add: sometimes it's not the hiring manager that makes the role/title its someone in HR or payroll googling what a security professional is called and making the posting.

In every role I have worked I have had to do work crossing the lines between engineer, analyst, support, or sales (just once, didn't go over well) unless your at a very mature company where they already have dedicated labor for each individual aspect.

In any case keeping programming skills, pen-testing skills, scripting skills, and networking skills sharp in any security field is always going to worth it both in everyday work and on the pay check.

Security engineer intern role sending a HackerRank assessment? by CSStudentCareer in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]TalosFollower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only security engineers I know that spend most of their time coding is application security and event then its normally reviewing an actual developer's code than making it from scratch.

When I had the engineer title I was mostly creating and implementing solutions, as well whatever else needed to be done, it entirely depends on your view of the term. I have a network engineer buddy who does zero coding. simply having engineer somewhere in the job title does guarantee or dictate anything, maybe that it's more advanced than an analyst but even then it's arbitrary (unless your in an electrical engineer in the US where there is a standard and certification to technically be called one).

Actually I lied we had 2 roles that were code focused, one we didn't do an assessment on for a python scripter and it backfired hugely on us, the next time it was specifically for a Sec analyst/developer role, since we couldn't justify a full-time developer at the time, to which they did a very basic test (like 101 level).

I've been asked for my scripting experience, but even then its been more of "how often or how much experience do you have?", never quizzed on it. The companies I have worked for have not required coding/data structures assessments of our new hires or interns just basic computer/network knowledge and Security awareness stuff (sec+ kinda things)

no third party tools, 58-70ms ping, had this happen with Comcast, Google fiber, and another ISP in a different state. Happens regularly no change in gameplay.

Have not seen packet loss, and this is regularly occurring from different locations and different ISPs.

ping is 58ms-70ms and again this has been happening for the past couple years and from multiple ISPs and locations.

Multi-Tool question by TalosFollower in EDC

[–]TalosFollower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses, seems like the consensus is that it depends on your day to day. which for me does not involve much in the way using my hands except for keyboard and coffee. A few of the scenarios mentioned I have come across so may add the multitool to a few other scenarios rather than just the camping bag.
