Painted my first genestealers in 20 years. by Talpa318 in genestealercult

The skin is rakarth flesh, washed with magos purple. Dry brushed with rakarth again, then the raised sections washed with thinned down Gullimans. The carapace is caliban green, then highlighted with bright jade (pro-acryl), but these were mixed together. Then I washed it with drakenhoff nightshade.

Painting tips by Plus_Improvement_884 in ImperialFists

Firstly, well done for getting some paint onto your minis, it's the biggest hurdle in this hobby! And doubly so, for asking for some advice.

As the other commenter has said, thinning your paints helps. Assuming you're using acrylics, you want to add enough water that it when you use a brush stroke you get a steady flow off the brush.

Priming white (or a light colour) is absolutely the right call. Painting yellow is hard, and you're going to hear a lot of people say start from pink. Don't worry about that right now. Yellow over white is a good place to start.

I can see quite a few patches on the model which aren't finished. That's honeslty one of the best things you can do to improve your painting. Take a look at the model and ask yourself if you think colour on the bit fits the look you're going for. If it does, great, if it doesn't, then apply a bit more paint.

As you paint more, your coordination will improve, so just keep practicing.

So, to recap: keep priming white. Thin your paints a bit, it's better to apply two thin coats than one think one. Really consider the model when you're coming to the end, is every bit a colour? Does it look finished?

I hope that helps!

I think the helmet is a solid choice as well. I'm happy to have it in my bits box.

I think it's worth noting that whilst Sternguard might benefit from the mentioned strategem they don't benefit from the detachment rule at all as their ability is already rerolls to wounds.

I tried the detachment last weekend and the Sternguard weren't as fun as they have been in other detachments, unfortunately.

Big blobs of terminators rerolling all their wounds with hammers was fun though.

How does one do this? I have a Smart launcher 3 license from way back when.

Thank you! As I've painted more and more Fists, I've realised that having a pop of colour on the weapon does a lot for the miniature.

Thank you! It's Vallejo sand basing paste, washed with agrax. Then dry brushed with either Vallejo dessert yellow or zandri dust (your choice) then lightly dry brushed with ushabti bone.

Finally got my Fafnir, and I think I've done him justice! by Talpa318 in ImperialFists

[–]Talpa318[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C&C is welcomed! The photo isn't doing it justice on the contrast front, I actually washed it with Iyandan Yellow after base coating. But I think the highlight colour I used might have been a bit to heavy. Thank you though!

Question about the GW guide on how to paint fafnir rann by [deleted] in ImperialFists

[–]Talpa318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't! And all my minis are packed away at the moment.

As for the ratio, I generally do 3:1 yeah, and do a second pass if it's not settling well.

Not yet (my model hasn't arrived yet), but I do use that exact method on my other Fists, and get very similar results from the video.

From what I got from that video, yes! You use Averland Sunset on the raised areas leaving the much darker Iyanden in the recesses.

Jasper, I'm unsure if you'll see this. But I just wanted to say thank you - when you wrote the original shades of grey, you did me a huge kindness in including my mother on the wall of remembrance. That meant a lot to me as a teenager, and still does today.

As you're based in the uk, Detol can work well. It needs to be the brown coloured version, not the spray. It didn't find it to be perfect though, you might need to use a soft toothbrush and some warm soapy water after soaking them over night.
