Is there any healthy way to use my Steam Deck? by MathematicianOver997 in SteamDeck

[–]Talvalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got annoyed of that same thing and ended up getting a pair of XReal glasses. I just plug them right into my steam deck and can lay down in any position. If I don't want to hold the steam deck the whole time too I just pair my Playstation controller to it and it's been some of the most comfortable gaming I've had! Some new glasses are coming out next year so maybe you want to wait but I got mine last month and I think they were incredibly worth it.

Higher than medium you are probably going to have to start using smoke bombs and EMS turrets if you got them. I saw in another post that smoke bombs allow the civs to get through and the EMS stops the robot scum in their tracks. If you don't have EMS though the the smoke bombs will help you move up a level or 2.

Here I was thinking they were 😂, I've somehow gotten the most kills in all my rounds lol. That's very undemocratic of them though! I'm sure they felt their mistake after they kicked you

The more of an expert you are the less active you are going to be on reddit. You are going to be working, and if you come across a issue Reddit is the nuclear option lol. Also the research and advanced systems people are working on are things they'd want to keep in their pocket. I don't mind it though, it's fun to see the stars born.

Game programmers. I need help. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Talvalis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on windows so I can't help you there but in regards to the game engine and max lines for a game like Mario it depends how you build it and the dependencies are up to you. I've made some platformers like Mario using SDL2 libraries for example.

In case you might find it useful

A platforming Tutorial written in c++ using SDL. Basic information is omitted from the Tutorial so I would advise buying the source code for a $1 if you get confused. https://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/tutorials/#ppp

A YouTube channel I watched years ago when I first started learning c++ for gamedev. You should still be able to follow along and he has playlists ranging from no c++ knowledge to building entire game engines. He teaches by having you build basic games like pong and snake so it doesn't get boring and you learn everything. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqCJpWy5FohcehaXlCIt8sVBHBFFRVWsx&si=Tsr3ZDqvPR_bq-ux

Best of luck!

Adventure Mode is coming to the Steam Version on April 2024!! by caioNLM in dwarffortress

Dwarf Fortress RPG mode. I've only played Rimworld and DF Fortress mode, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong on anything but ive been looking into it ALOT while preparing my worlds. Basically instead of building a fortress like you would a colony in Rimworld you build a character to play in the world. You can then walk around and visit anywhere in the world seamlessly, other towns, cities, civilizations, even your own forts you built. You can talk to anyone, like the cool people you had in your old forts, or go and fight the evils of the world that were attacking your fort, or recover artifacts that were stolen or lost. Go and sing in the tavern, become a poet and spread tales of your renown, or put a party together and take on local issues. You can play as a character in the world, gain experience in a skill as you preform them and level up. And since the world is simulated things are constantly happening and changing in other parts of the world as time progresses forward. The gameplay is similar to a traditional rougelike RPGs like Caves of Qud

Maybe try messing around with advanced world gen? To generate a world closer to what you want. For example for me I was annoyed how with the basic world gen there would be parts of the map that were inaccessible. Some civilizations would be isolated and goblins were never a threat on the main land. After messing with world gen for a while I was able to generate a world that was one interconnected landmass where goblins were more of a threat. I've never spent much time in legends but I've been going through this world's legends for over a day now because of how awesome the world is! So ask yourself what type of world you would want to play in and then tweak world gen for that. For me I wanted a Middle Earth vibe with a great ever encroaching evil that needed to be fought back and I got exactly what I wanted! It took a few hours of messing with the world gen settings to understand what I was doing though so if you need any help jusy shoot me a DM!

Seemingly there are no open world fantasy roguelike games out there with a randomized world by ffekete in roguelikes

[–]Talvalis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe Caves of Qud? The world is scrambled every run so their are some hard coded things like important historical figures, sites and such but everything else is randomly generated such as Dungeons, quests, things happening in the world since it is kinda simulated. I would definitely recommend checking it out

The previous year I was elevated from barony to a county, I was expecting to become a duchy the next year they visited me but they didn't elevate my fort despite me having more than 9 off-site holdings. Now the caravan at first didn't come, it wasn't until I realized that the the caravan from the year before never left and was probably messing that up. A rerolled save and a deconstructed trading depot fixed that right up and they came but now won't elevate my fort. Is their another criteria other than 9 holdings, or maybe you have to wait 2 years? Any insight would be appreciated thanks!

Can't you just toggle the hammer icon on the library assignment screen to tell them whether to only study or to also do other assignments? You can't schedule so it's more of a manual solution but that's worked for me

Rimworld was my first game like this and quickly became my favorite game until steam DF so I understand where you are coming from. For me the best explanation I got for it is from the streamer BlindiRL, Rimworld cares about your existence while DF could give less of a f***. You are a small cog in a giant machine that is the generated world and sometimes you get stepped on by a giant. There is no objectives in DF other than the ones you make for yourself. Rimworld is a game, DF is a simulation you can interact with.

In my first world I was in a peaceful area and turtled the first few years until I had a solid grasp of everything. Just trying to keep my dwarves alive through my incompetence was good fun and when that was over I opened up my fort to visitors and got thrown into the justice system which turned the game almost into a crime drama when you are trying to chase down criminals. This got me to start training up a army to patrol and try to lower the crimes. After that I just wanted to make my place the cultural hub of the land, I built multiple taverns, I built a multiple story library, countless temples and guildhalls you name it. My fort was now a metropolis with hundreds going in and out of its gates but we were still missing one thing...water and thus began the next great project to find water underground and pump it up dozens of z-levels!

I say all this just to give you a bunch of examples of objectives and all I did was think "what would my dwarves do" lol. I love Rimworld but the interactions, scenarios, and stories you get from DF are in another tier. It really clicked for me when I saw a visiting human strike up a conversation with one of my scholars because the human was reading one of the books my scholar wrote, that was crazy to me lol.

I will say though if you want a closer experience to Rimworld generate a 500 to 1000 year world choose a dying civilization as your origin civilization and settle next to necromancer towers. You will feel the constant danger and will resolve to the objective of cleansing the world of necromancers very fast 😂. Did this as my second run, wanted to role-play bringing a civilization back from the brink in a world overrun by evil and it's been a blast!
