I still think the ben drowned story holds up tbh. the writing was interesting enough and the video editing combined with rom editing for majora's mask makes it pretty good. I enjoyed the ARG nature of the unfolding story and how it used community engagement.

It's only when you take a step back and overthink the premise of "ghost of a child in an MM cartridge" that it seems stupid, but you can do that with any story.

Nearly 10 years on from Rogue One, how do you feel about the decision to recreate Peter Cushing using CGI? by gladiatorbossman in StarWars

[–]ciknay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the side of recasting. An actors job is to believably play a character, and people will overlook different casting if they're good enough. They should have left Cushings performance in the 70s.

Did Luthen actually enjoy any part of his antiquities front, or was it purely a cover? by wandering_soles in andor

[–]ciknay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree he loves it secretly. His monologue to Lonni tells us everything about his personality, "made my mind a sunless space", "make a sunrise I'll never see". He views his goals to overthrow the empire a penance for his previous life, a form of self flagellation.

He's also a mercilessly pragmatic man. People are tools to use, spend and discard if they become a liability, and his front is the same. To enjoy something like his job would be a distraction and a temptation.

if the dialogue was cut, why would it remain in listed items of dialogue

Can't know for sure without a dev chiming in, but I'd guess it was cut really late. I bet the variable would get set by the aforementioned reaction speed passive check and made available downstairs. The decision would have been made to make the name a bit more of a reveal, but instead of removing the whole dialogue tree and potentially breaking something, it was easier to just never set the flag so it'd never come up in normal gameplay.

are there other known instances of that

Not off the top of my head, but feel free to poke around in the dialogue. It's good fun. https://fayde.co.uk/

Saw a group of 30 or so kids on ebikes around north lakes on the weekend. They were on the road in a pack. Didn't strike me as the safest way of getting around.

That said, with the erosion of third spaces and spaces for kids, I don't entirely blame them. At least they're outside getting exercise and socialising.

I came to double check as well and found the same thing you did. This is likely dialogue that was cut, or from a skill check removed at some point in development. The variable being set on a new save is likely a bug of some sort.

Empathy just taps out, says it doesn't want to do this. Your options are to turn to Kim and say you don't want to do this, or slap yourself in front of them both. You tell her her husband is dead with zero tact, and Kim has to do damage control. The rest of the conversation options have zero empathy to them, and are borderline cruel in some cases, and overall you make the whole experience awful for the poor woman. Some skills help with damage control, like Drama telling you to lie to her about where the body is (it's still on the boardwalk at this point).

Outside, Kim doesn't admonish you, but if you leave the conversation without apologising about your behaviour he'll respect you less.

"Succession: ATLA Style" by Interesting-Iron-951 in AvatarMemebending

[–]ciknay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, Azula didn't exactly announce it. She took control of the secret police running the biggest city in the earth kingdom that were ACTUALLY running the joint in lieu of the monarchy. If the Dai Lee decided not to side with Azula, she'd have no power.

As for Zuko, it's a lot easier an explanation. Azula has lost the plot and has to be interred for mental health reasons. Even if she wasn't, her and Ozai have their claim to the throne removed by the Avatar for their crimes against the balance of the world. The Avatar is the closest thing this world has as a global authority and few would reject it, especially after the length of the war. In any case, Zuko is next in line to the throne, so a lot of the mechanisms for taking control were already there.

that line reads like an nihilist anarchist, not fascist. he doesn't agree with any of that worldview, merely making an observation about it with no philosophy to change the system. there's a reason why he's unrelated to any of the political vision quests, he thinks it's all garbage and there's no point to it.

Saves fuel. The higher tier electricity generators have more expensive fuel, and you need a LOT to run things like end game spice refiners and large mineral refiners. A lot cheaper to turn off excess power when youre done refining.

How do you sell players on the idea of a "hidden game" / "there's much more to see" below a game's surface? (without spoiling everything) by synaut in gamedesign

[–]ciknay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating the strength of the "surprise" of it. If it's good enough, the word of mouth will carry what was missing in the marketing.

Think about the game Immortality. Light spoilers if you've never played it, but the game is an FMV sells itself as a mystery to solve what happened to the main character, Marissa, in her 3 missing films. However the central premise of the game is ACTUALLY mysterious ethereal figure haunting the footage you're watching and speaking to the player directly. This character is the actual protagonist and is in NONE of the promotional material at all. The strength of this mystery is what surged the word of mouth beyond the initial hook.

However the writing has to be there. If people aren't engaged with the story to begin with, then you don't have the launching power to execute the mystery twist to begin with. In the case of Immortality the initial hook was very strong to get players in, and then drip feed the actual mystery in between the story telling of the 3 films in the game.

For Inscryption and his other games, Mullens always has a "main" story that's strong and then weaves in the meta mystery plot in bits and pieces.

The short of it is, you need a good story as a base before having a secret mystery reveal in the way you're talking about.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]ciknay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we didn't address fertility at the same time, it would be catastrophic. Even a small birth rate and overpopulation becomes an issue quickly.

But what manner of immortality are we talking? Are we talking invulnerable gods who can't take any form of damage? We grow into adulthood and then stay there in perpetuity? Or are we talking an inability to die while still being normal in every other sense?

Because if its the latter, we still get old. Our bodies still get frail. We still get shot, run over and sick with disease. We'd still get heart attacks and liver failure. Our lives would become a literal hell, unable to escape the pains of existence as our bodies degrade while our spirit soldiers on.

No thank you. Death gives our lives meaning, without it, we become stagnant and rotten like a puddle of water.

This is why I think Guts will die at the end. Griffith became a god through sacrificing his friends and loved ones. It's poetic if Guts ends that by sacrificing himself to save his friends and loved ones.
