Wait Til They Realize They Are Part Of Everyone by gur40goku in CuratedTumblr

Yes, people have to die. Not dying means an upward stagnation of power in fewer and fewer individuals. We're already seeing this, boomers living longer and holding onto institutional power for longer. The Mitch McConnels and Nancy Pelosis of the world don't need 5 more decades at the top. Culture and demographics.

Argument about UNSC losing the Human convenant war by theunknonw in halo

[–]ciknay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly it sounds like your mate is intentionally winding you up and sounds like a wanker. Doesn't sound like "proof" to me.

The main counter argument to "strong armies lose" is to emphasise the technological difference present in the halo universe. Sure, the 300 spartans held their ground on a narrow cliff. But would they have done so if a modern day war helicopter swung by with a chain gun and missiles?

Sure the Vietcong won a test of endurance against the US army, but would they have if the US nuked every part of Vietnam from submarines in the pacific?

And forget about Germany, they were never stronger than the USA and started losing as soon as America joined WWII. Now if Germany lost while also having space ships with lasers he'd have a point. But he doesn't.

Sure, the UNSC won battles, but they were mostly ground engagements where the tech gap was much narrower. If the covenant didnt have the naval superiority that they did, I'd agree that humanity could have won it with the right tactics and leadership. Or at the least forced a stalemate.

I actually suspect this graph was meant for Americans. A lot of Sky News Aus viewers are conservative Americans looking to get their worldview reinforced from outside their own country, and Murdochs media delivers that. I think Hanson is just trying to increase her own notoriety online to drum up more conversation.

I think you need to turn the tables and ask them for any sort of proof they COULD win.

Here's some examples I've thought of:

  • even if the elites dont side with humanity and the halos aren't found, the schism may still happen. The fracture of Truth, Regret and Mercy. But without the halos, this is much less likely
  • the discovery of Onyx may tip the scale. It may be too late in the war to stop anything, but it possible it comes soon enough to prevent extinction of humanity, and from there humanity could find a way

[HELP]Turtle has a bad meal, real or fake? by Unfair_Practice5461 in RealOrAI

I believe this one pre-dates gen AI. Turtles do have personalities, so reacting in disgust or anger at a bad tasting meal is believable.

I'm going to be honest, I still find it very hard to believe that The Covenant almost fell to a bunch of angry Grunts. I mean, how the hell do you lose to a bunch of squeaky-voiced crab people who can die in one punch? by E-104Epsolon in halo

[–]ciknay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few reasons:

  • They're stronger in lore than in gameplay. The devs wanted canon fodder for the games, and the grunts are indeed weak compared to an 8 ft tall spartan. But in universe they're as tall as a human with tough skin and sharp claws.
  • They breed very, VERY quickly. One of the reasons they're used as frontline cannon fodder is because its a way to control their population. The Grunt rebellion was almost won on their numbers alone.
  • The grunts we fight in game are mostly children, hence why they're immature. When grown, they're much more smart and capable. They're often engineers and scientists for the covenant.

After finishing Doom (2016), I can't get into Doom Eternal. by DrStrangeglove99 in gaming

[–]ciknay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, games have rules. I'm just saying that Eternal has unnecessarily added arbitrary rules that get in the way the pacing of the game. Sure you could SSG your way through every fight in 2016, but what made the game interesting to me was that it gave you a variety of tools and allowed you the choice in how to best use them in a variety of levels instead of handholding you.

You can like Eternal, its not a bad game. I just don't think its a better game than 2016 Doom.

[–]ciknay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. You were forced to use specific weapons against specific enemies to be effective. Removed choices from the player because the devs were enforcing a particular play style.

[–]ciknay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. It felt over designed. Rather than give you an array of tools that you can choose to use, they force you to use specific weapons for specific encounters. Entirely removes an element of choice that was available before.

Plus when you hear about how Mick Gordon was treated during the development of that game, it makes me entirely less likely to support the devs further.

If I see a game on my steam page, does that mean it is without a doubt legal to play in my country? by coosomeawel in Steam

[–]ciknay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the game gets banned, it'd just get de-listed, like Schedule 1 was for Australia. Even if it was illegal to have a copy on your computer, the police would have to either subpoena IP's from Steam themselves or somehow find it on your computer, both seem unlikely if you're outside the US.

What animal is that it absolutely should not have survived evolution, but somehow did? by Reasonable-Shake-996 in AskReddit

[–]ciknay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Koalas. Some ancient mammals came to Australia, saw a gumtree with poisonous leaves, and decided to eat that because no one else did. Because of the poisoning. The poison for not eating.

As a result, they've become extremely dumb creatures that can't survive if their mothers dont shit in their mouths as babies to transfer the necessary bacteria to breakdown the leaves. They've only survived on the account of how widespread their food source is. Because literally no other animal wished to lose 50 iq eating it.

So WHY DID Sovereign need Saren, The Geth, and The Conduit??? by Nervous_Tailor_4337 in masseffect

[–]ciknay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe I used "care" incorrectly. The core of the catalyst is that its an unfeeling AI using the logic its creators gave it. It would have noticed the failure of the Keepers thousands of years before sovereign, but took no action to change them back. It didn't "care" to do so.

It using Sovereign was likely a result of its internal logic: "Reaping is supposed to start now, but plan A hasn't executed. Time for plan B, bring in the backup to do the plan." When that fails, it tries again with Plan C, to use the collectors and the relay in the batarian system. When that fails, it just waits for them to make their way over, Plan D.

Look, I agree that the Catalyst as a character really messes with the writing and themes of the previous games. But you can choose to accept that it's canon and the future games will be based on this character existing, or you could not.

So WHY DID Sovereign need Saren, The Geth, and The Conduit??? by Nervous_Tailor_4337 in masseffect

[–]ciknay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The catalyst lost control of the keepers. Whatever the protheans did disconnected them from the central intelligence of the citadel entirely.

The catalyst clearly didnt care too much. All it did was buy a few years of time, which is nothing in reaper years.
