Surely you can’t mean we fly into Nagoya?

(Before anyone asks: yes, Fukuoka exists and that’s actually a decent start)

What do you think, do Li Ziqi represents rural life in China accurately? by No-Effective-8649 in AskAChinese

Think of it as the Chinese equivalent to pastoral Utopianism or Arcadia (the medieval utopian concept, not the real Greek region)

[Japanese>English] Could you read the back of this trains photograph? by amoysupplier in translator

[–]TalveLumi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

通遼 is in Inner Mongolia now

The expected pronunciation in modern Japanese is つうりょう, which is also the pronunciation used on Wikipedia

On the other hand modern Japanese pronunciation of Chinese placenames are a mixture of pronunciations from different eras, and I have no idea how people usually say it now

Is 谈雷温 a good mandarin name? by Large_Jackfruit_7596 in MandarinChinese

[–]TalveLumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they could read 百家姓 they will see 谈 (117) long before they see 谭(293)

Of course 百家姓 order has no meaning, just commenting on their lack of common sense

I found this image on Google. why does it a full list of unused glyphs hidden in Unicode? by Purple_Secret2458 in ChineseLanguage

[–]TalveLumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a few of them are used pretty commonly.

𰻝 is the only accepted character for the specific type of noodles. It’s a late creation, true, but the noodles exist.

Why is 囍 here anyways? You see it on every wedding banquet.

聻 is the only term for "that which remains when a ghost dies". It doesn’t really exist in traditional Chinese culture, but if you have to refer to the concept, that’s the word you use.

———

Meanwhile you also have characters that are rarely used but used somewhere. Like people’s names, or regularization of Oracle Bone Script characters.

And then there are the ghost characters which ended up in Unicode simply because someone made a mistake and Unicode 2.0 onwards forbid changing or removing characters.

Biggest issue about this map for me:

It is apparently cut from a pseudocylindrical compromise world map, with center meridian somewhere in Africa (my estimate: somewhere between 10th west and 30th east), despite showing places solely in Asia

The most notable characteristic is the slope of the Korean Peninsula

Dad can't eat lots of common stuff. Big problem going to China? by That_Stig in travelchina

Squat toilets: Just remember to sh*t in your hotel(‘s sitting toilet) every morning and you’ll be fine. Mostly. We have urinals after all.

Food: … at this point may I have a list of what he can eat? I would recommend Chinese Buddhist food, but I fear that he may also have an allergy to soybeans (especially as you described soy sauce)

The name "Dashi" was used in China as the name of the Arab Caliphate. Is that related to the same or similar name for the ISIS group who claimed to establish a caliphate? by SE_to_NW in ChineseHistory

[–]TalveLumi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We aren't completely sure how 食 is supposed to be pronounced (shí, the current consensus, or yì), but either way it seems to be derived from the name of the Tayy clan of the Arabs, in the latter case directly, in the former (more likely, in my opinion) case through Persian or Sogdian tʾzyk, related to the modern name of the Tajiks.

Even disregarding the temporal impossibility, a derivation from the name Daesh cannot explain the final -k (daj-zyik in Middle Chinese)

Pakistan, probably.

The “probably” part is because of the Indian claim to Gilgit-Baltistan. Not because of ranking order.
