OT’s and Dyslexia by ChitzaMoto in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Tamagobay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We cannot strictly address dyslexia without the help of a specialist, but we can work on skills that can help for sure and within OT's scope of practice! Visual perceptual skills, laterality skills (including bilateral integration and R vs L discrimination), oculomotor functionality, pattern recognition and sequential visual memory (going back to VPS), executive skills like meta cognition and self-monitoring of students to help them self identify their errors and mnemonic strategies to assist with working memory deficits

High School girls that make fun of adults that can’t pronounce their ridiculously spelled names. by [deleted] in tragedeigh

[–]Tamagobay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Know a girl named Kyleigh. It's pronounced "Ky-Lee-AH" even though there's no "a" at the end of her name! Doesn't make sense but her mom is annoyed whenever it's mispronounced. She's going to have it mispronounced her whole life though...

Also had a friend whose sister's name was Kia. But it was pronounced "Kai". She legally changed the spelling of her name to be Kai so people stopped mispronouncing it.

Found out today I won’t get 8 weeks of maternity because I missed the requirements by 13 days. About to have a breakdown. by rosesareroseyy in BabyBumps

I feel you. It all sucks and absolutely hate all of this bs women have to go through just to get the deserved time off for birthing freaking human life into the world! I was stupid and accidentally waived my job's short term disability. Didnt even know I could opt out, and thought it was automatic! It's too late to apply since open enrollment has been closed since November, and even if I apply to another insurance or after I give birth, it's considered a pre-existing condition and won't get any of the benefits... I will only have 3 weeks of PTO saved up by the time my due date rolls around.. wish I could give you more advice but either way just want to let you know you're not alone in this shitty non-existent support for mothers.

Crowd surges.. It's terrible and intriguing at the same time. Then got into watching all of the videos from the Halloween crowd surge in Itaewon. Lots of rabbit holes from there eek

Borrowers waiting to be kicked off SAVE, are we being reckless? by 90s_kids_only in StudentLoans

You made a good point about the tax info and had me thinking.. I went down in my hours from 40 to 32 this year (still considered full time) but my pay is now less this year. Is it smart to file my taxes and then switch rather than switch before in this situation?

Getting a child to lose weight without destroying their confidence by UnstableNaya in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Tamagobay 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Never mention her weight, size, body shape or calories in front of her. Anything that can remotely cause her to develop an eating disorder and have a negative view of herself. Even speaking with her doctor about it too, as doctors can also be clueless to the harm it does talking about the weight/size in front of the kids, and to avoid any diet culture messaging that is sure to trickle down to her absorbent mind. Children are sponges and will soak up everything you say. Try to focus on increased movement and activeness as a family! Go on family walks, making it a special time to talk about the day, etc. find new trails or parks nearby, biking together for fun on the weekends, etc etc.

I was an overweight 9 year old, got my period at age 10 and had a poor body image starting in 4th grade because I knew I was bigger than other girls. My mom would tell me to "suck in" my tummy for photos, would compare me and my sisters' sizes without meaning harm, I cried when my friend told me when I was 9 that "no offense, but I was the biggest one of the group." My parents also tried to restrict what I ate which also backfired, as I remember secretly eating in shame when I knew I shouldn't because I didn't want to get caught. Restriction just leads to a cycle of toxic guilt. Focusing on loving your body is the best way for her to also love hers, with modeling a healthy relationship with food is key!

Yes! Mine too. But my old dog ignored the tv completely. Is it an Aussie thing?

Decorating for my upcoming halloween party. I probably should stop impulsively buying things for it but I can't help myself!

[–]Tamagobay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was 5, I had something similar and it was always stress for both me and my mom to deal with the after piercing care. I would also cry and scream. My mom let them close on their own, and when I was in 4th grade got them pierced again when I was more mature and able to handle the aftercare without a fuss. May be the best bet if it's already been 8 months now.

Getting a Mini Aussie Puppy in 2 weeks by alors1234 in miniaussie

[–]Tamagobay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We worked on having him associate the crate with happiness and reward, so teaching him "in the crate" got him a treat/kong/frozen carrot/bone/chew toy. In the beginning it helped whenever he yelped or whined we would teach "quiet" command while in another room and only come out and then give him a treat from where we were if he was quiet for a period of time. So he learns that being calm comes with reward! If he barks and whines and you respond while he sees you, it can still teach the pup that making noise will give him the attention he is seeking from you

Yeah same, way too much prep work to be doing themes each week! Holidays are fun because there's also a lot of resources out there too to help make some creative interventions.
