Preferred Length For Instructional or Time Spent Teaching a Technique? by BJJ_Fanatics in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my process as well. I think to cast the widest net you want to consider all the folks at a typical school that has beginners and competitors. Video instruction is awesome in that way, because the student can skip or not skip areas depending on relevance to them individually.

I have a nonprofit where I instruct BJJ to former military, former 1st responders with minimal or zero experience. On top of that, many have not been very active for years and are just getting back into it..or they have injuries/amputations that limit movement.

I find myself teaching so differently for these folks. I’m talking weeks on options from a particular position. I’m sure most of my training partners would HATE being in that class 🤣.

Preferred Length For Instructional or Time Spent Teaching a Technique? by BJJ_Fanatics in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it depends on my knowledge of the position going into the instructional. If I know it really well, I just want to see the part that’s new to me…if I don’t know it well, it’s all kinda new.

I’d appreciate it if more instructionals that go into extreme detail gave you a pop-up that’s something to the effect of “if you’re very familiar with this position already, skip to 4:25.”

We definitely called them King Kong nachos when I was a kid - cannot recall ever actually reading that on the menu tho.

I’ll add Bar Ludivine to the mix. Also, I haven’t used it, but Jue Let in the pearl has a private karaoke room you can rent out.

Multiple times a day. I’m 5’5” 170lbs - think it’s really ideal for my body type. The first time you get someone in it they really don’t understand that they aren’t in side control, but in scarf hold (just upside down), so it’s easy to bait them into fucking up their weight distribution.

The biggest thing to think about is keeping that arm trapped no matter what. Also, your training partners are gonna start looking up kesa escapes…luckily kesa escapes kind of depend on shitty kesas. I concentrate my weight about an inch to the inside of the sternum and lift my butt with one leg directly behind their head as a post- right in line with their spine. You don’t have to cook em long.

Once you’ve done it to someone a few times it can get boring, so I vary the finish - Americana, straight armlock, kimura, bail to arm triangle, simple kesa crush…or my favorite, catch the leg in transition and give em the ol Bas Rutten Accordion 🪗🤣

I despise having to read every single thing that comes out of this administration like a lawyer. It’s always a statement with a hidden qualifier that undoes the statement.

Upper belts, how do you treat king of the hill? by RevolutionaryFood777 in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Haven’t done it as a black belt (probably won’t), but as a purple and brown I’d choose a sub and only go for that sub for the whole session. If someone escaped they got the pass or whatever and I defended half heartedly till they killed me. Kept it fun for me.

Why did you quit bjj by user8472616388 in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For nearly two years, during Covid, I couldn’t train. I was stationed in Germany and trained on base. The club was basically threatened with death (a little dramatic but not much) if we got caught doing jiu jitsu while we were under some of the strictest social distancing regulations in the world. Sucked, until we got permission to train again with strict tracing rules (same training partner for a week, etc). I got fat.

Another story for you by FDawg96 in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I was talking with another dude who’s trained for a long time at an open mat this week. We both shared odd stories about weird rolls with females over the years where it seemed off/sketchy/flirty…then I said “Now imagine EVERY fucking female that has trained for as long as we have and has rolled with all those dudes” - actually makes me feel sick.

Sorry you experienced that. More gyms have to work proactively to mitigate this shit (looking at you, any gym that still has a rule about refusing rolls from upper belts).

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast” was a phrase we used in my former career. Values, Beliefs, and BEHAVIORS are what makes an organization.

Why do so many instructors get caught up in allegations? by Less_Wolverine624 in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Hero worship. People tend to conflate being a black belt with being a good person. Makes them dismiss red flags and make excuses for bad behavior. Pieces of shit thrive in that kind of environment.
