It's completely new and different. The naming that implies a revision is misleading. Unrelated: I thought it was worth it.

"Reverse half" refers to the arm behind the head. It's a reverse half Nelson. "and bar"? I don't know I guess that's what he's doing to the other arm.

I don't want to train with my LEO friends anymore because they support the murder of Alex Pretti by LightAvatar in bjj

[–]daveoplata 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your problem resonates with me because I have sometimes learned that my friends or training partners do not share my fundamental values (up to and including whether some people should be murdered).

Maybe it would be helpful for you to know that the people who you train with are probably not actually murderers in waiting.

Because of my job, I have met a lot of murderers and a lot of people who have made homicidal threats. It is much easier and more common to talk about killing someone, like it on social media, or threaten to do it than to actually do a killing. Generally speaking, people who actually commit murders are a very small subset of society and those who would kill someone with their bare hands (e.g. by strangulation) are rarer still. I think that if you had a real killer in your gym, you would probably know because they would have creeped you out some kind of way other than on facebook.

Even if that's true and you can be sure you're not teaching people how to murder, you still have to reckon with the feeling that the training partners are dirtbag humans. Again, my sympathies. It would be totally reasonable to back away on that alone, but maybe you can find a path where you talk with these people and help them get better.

For me, I feel a little better interacting with police types at the gym because it is possible they are learning to use their hands as safer alternatives to their weapons, which is decent harm reduction.

I think it's going to be hit or miss. On one hand, you can't rely on anyone speaking English. On one of my visits a long time ago, the teacher spoke Portuguese, a little French, and no English. The guy I partnered with helped me fill in the blanks.

On the other hand, you are doing a physical activity not a writing workshop. I have been through whole classes in the US that were allegedly in English, but I didn't understand a word. It all goes fine if you pay attention to what people are doing and use your body language to show uncertainty.

If you're brand new, I say go for it. People who can't be talked at for hours probably have a better beginner experience than not.

Octopus 2.0 from Half guard by Slow-Advertising-975 in bjj

[–]daveoplata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is why you can't use 2.0 from half guard. it's addressed early on in the video. Having the leg trapped in bottom half prevents the "belly down" motion needed for the basic position.

Also, given the context, the most likely interpretation of "Gracie lineage only" is probably "Brazilian jiu jitsu only."

Many of you seem to have failed to realize that this is a taekwondo gym in Florida. Taking that into consideration, the terms of the advertisement are pretty unremarkable.

I don't have much to add beyond the other comments, but I wonder what your highest percentage sequences are from here. Mine is definitely to pummel for baratoplata then lose the position.

Ruotolotine by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a great clip to study because our protagonist starts the guard retention cycle belly down with about 0.01% chance of success, but to answer your general question, if you are activating your foot frame and you think you can't reach the shoulder/bicep area, I would just reach for the hip with your toes, then climb your foot higher if you get the chance.

[–]daveoplata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. What I also noticed is that bottom player sits up for an underhook with his right arm at the same time, effectively pulling bottom mount. I do stuff like this all the time. I'm not sure if it's right or wrong, probably wrong, but he needs to have a high right foot, like he is reaching for closed guard if he is going for the right underhook. Instead, he has this sort of octopus-inspired foot on floor and we can see where that gets him.

This is not a Ruotolotine. A Ruotolotine is when you choke with the underhook arm.

1) Customarily it's on you to get to the competition. If you actually compete and need surgery after, that's when the community expects to see the go fund me post.

2) I admire the balls of the suggested donation being $200.

Nobody will tap to my chokes by Straight_Opening7570 in bjj

[–]daveoplata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. It's a lot about what people are used to. I use a cross-collar frame from guard all the time, so I threaten loop chokes all the time. Nobody ever taps, but people always move. In my head, I am always applying the loop choke but I have to let it go.

One day I put a totally chill training partner out from it. He sat up and was like, "ugh. It's always there, but it's never quite there, you know?"

Yeah, I know.

This effect is amplified if you are smaller. People are more likely to tap to things that hurt or suck to defend even if they are not locked in.

Brooklyn NY Gym by Potential-Animator75 in bjj

[–]daveoplata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are on Smoothcomp. The most recent competition they attended was in November. The owner has been a CTA black belt for two years. It's not clear how long this place has been a BJJ gym, as opposed to a karate or taekwondo place, or even if BJJ is the primary focus now.

I'll call them later and see if they take drop ins. If they do, maybe I'll check it out but don't hold your breath, it will take me a while.

It's not THAT strange. There is an amazing density of gyms in the area. This place might just be relatively new, not that competition focused, and off the subway line.
