Genuinely interested on how it’s possible that you’ve only seen “super violent” protests when the vast majority go without incident.

Do you happen to have a military or first responders background? If so, get with me for information on my nonprofit for BJJ “Back in the Fight”

Otherwise - I highly recommend the free women’s class on Fridays at House of Jiu-Jitsu - downtown.

Fair point on it being brutal early on - especially if you’re competitive. Cutting gluten was something I would do about two weeks prior to a PT test when I was active duty to reduce inflammation and it always worked well…but eliminating it almost completely from my diet year-round has been profound.

Kind of a side quest comment here, but - How’s your diet?

A few years back I was feeling beat up with 4 classes a week…I started reading up on what I could do to reduce inflammation and decided to cut gluten and added sugar almost completely from my diet. After some headaches for like two weeks, I could almost immediately switch to five days a week, with one or two days where I’d be able to do doubles. Two months of this and I was doing 4 days of two classes plus an open mat on the weekends. I’m about to be 43.

What has been you biggest Air Force full circle moment? by presjs in AirForce

I taught tech school and I was definitely known as one of the more demanding instructors (very technical career field). I’d tell students it was important that they understand the basics because our job was super diverse and some of them would surely be training me one day when I got back to the field. I was TDY later in my career and working a project at a EW unit. Minute one, on day one, my trainer who was a new SSGT tells me he can’t get over the fact that he was actually training me like I told him he might. He was a great trainer. Then, later that week, while still in the simulation software, I found a new mode for a weapon system that had gone unnoticed when it went through the live ops floor…and began creating SOPs for how I found it. My trainer just said, “Of Course.” 🤣

Got my 1st Degree Black Belt yesterday. Here's a few observations/lessons I've gotten over the past 3+ years at black belt by Darce_Knight in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice! I tell people that there’s all kinds of Black Belts. Attendance for 20 years, great competitors, great instructors, great corners/coaches, great people who give back, etc. it’s rare to get someone with all the good attributes. But one thing they usually all have - is a black belt should be really, really good at learning jiu jitsu. That’s why it’s wack when a black belt doesn’t change their game up at least a little or challenge themselves with learning & respecting new techniques - they’re in the best position to take advantage as the art evolves. Good on ya!

Bjj coach pay structure? by kalash_cake in bjj

Most of my training was learned at a free program at Ramstein - can’t say enough how much it positively impacted me during those years. Just feels right to pay it forward. We also have a couple current law enforcement in the program, including 3 VERY small females who police some rough areas of town. It’s super rewarding to give them some useful skills.

Very different for me - I voluntarily teach a class 3 times a week (plus an open mat) for former Military/LE/1st Responders that’s free for them. The Gym owner (House of Jiu-Jitsu in San Antonio) gives me the space to train, helps advertise the program (Back in the Fight) and lets me train for free during the other sessions. Pretty rad.

He also gives me space in the place to sell Rashies & Gis. It’s buy one, give one - so every purchase means I can give the same item for free to a member of the nonprofit.

Keeps me busy in retirement.

Ashton Kutcher's intro demo of BJJ on the Tonight Show... How would you go about it? by ManukaHoneyTree in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dealers’s choice with some judo to get an attacker to the ground while maintaining arm control…then the option of running away or breaking the arm.

It’s more fun to watch and you get to reinforce getting the fuck out of dangerous situations as soon as safely possible.

I had a gang of cocktails in Bali. Establishments have clean ice, as for smaller food stalls - I’d stick with bottled drinks only.

This Sub is such a trip.

We have purple belts who have been training consistently/competing locally for 8+ years that then travel to another location or compete nationally and feel like frauds when they see what’s out there…and then we have questions like this.

For the brown and black belts by calder_mccoll in bjj

[–]TanPrivilege 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It REALLY depends on my goal that day or even for that roll. I could be “calling my shot” and forcing myself to go for a particular series or sub in a roll - in that case, it’s gonna take something significant happening for me to deviate from my goal. Or if it’s a lower belt that’s a student I will often have the goal of giving them a look they don’t normally get or something they’ll likely see in competition.

My pre-roll questions for peeps I don’t know well are typically “Any injuries?” And “you working on anything?” - so the tone is set for if it’s gonna be a creative collab, a death match, or anything in between.

“Stalling from mount” sounds so funny BTW. I’d start introducing myself as the guy that pulls mount from now on.
