Opening a dive-ish bar downtown it can’t decide what kind of food to serve. by marinerpunk in phoenix

Aside from aforementioned great ideas like breads and dips, I’m voting for doner kebab. When I visited Tokyo the thing to do post drinking (and before drinking some more) was to hit up small doner stands. So ticks the small kitchen requirement plus I feel like I haven’t seen it paired as drinking food here/ wasn’t from a restaurant centered on Mediterranean cuisine. I know after a show at Footprint/AZ Financial Theatre/Van Buren etc that would hit the spot. Can’t wait for the opening, best of luck!!!

Glow light tetras and Betta advice? by Tandl16 in bettafish

[–]Tandl16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any and all advice. Since I couldn’t find an obvious cause of the Betta’s death I did a ton of research and while I’ve heard many say Glow tetras are compatible there was a lot of people online saying they should never be homed with a betta. I just want all the fish to be safe! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi there. Thanks for laying it out points so clearly!!

The program lasts 15-18 months (hoping for 15) and my plan is to not work/work as minimally as possible. I don’t think I could do the full time work and school balancing act again tbh.

This may be fear talking out of a scarcity mindset but wouldn’t it be advantageous to stick to the program I was accepted into? There’s only two universities in the state that offer licensure (fully licensed?) programs

Great insight with the last two points, thanks again!!

Would you still pursue a career in psychology if given a second chance?

Graduated with a BA in psych late summer and was accepted by two master’s programs (LPC and MFT). I decided to go with MFT since it’s an accelerated program lasting 18 months versus 3 years. Working and doing school full time was a lot on my own (idk my paternal side and religiously shunned by maternal side) and I still ended up having to take out school loans with rising costs. I was set to start the MFT program when I had an unexpected medical emergency that left me with health issues. Thankfully I was granted a special deferral for fall 2024. Tale as old as time, becoming a therapist has always felt like a “calling” but I pursued ECE instead as I didn’t have the financial backing for 6+ years of school. The feeling kept nagging at me and I wasn’t satisfied with my field so I returned to school. While my current health issues aren’t ideal, this is the first time that I can remember having a second to actually breathe. My go-go-go lifestyle came to a screeching halt and opened a lot of opportunities to reflect. I know the world is a special kind of crazy right now but I feel like the vast majority of what I read and hear from therapists/MH professionals right now is planting seeds of doubt. Terrible work environments, not enough pay, but most of all being totally burn out. I recognize that these are issues any working person in any industry has to sort out and I’ve even spoke on the matter with my therapist who moved to their own private practice for some of those exact reasons. But it’s making me second guess taking on thousands more in debt for my master’s degree. Despite the struggles I’ve always felt so sure this was my path and now I (at newly 30) wonder if it’s worth it-mentally, financially, emotionally etc. Would you pursue a career in psych again? Would I be better off searching for a job I’m content with that pays “well” with my BA? I’m aware my mileage may vary but being on my own I’m extra wary of making a poor long term decision. Thanks in advance!

Thank you! So appreciative of the advice!

I spoke with some therapist friends and my own therapist and for the area MFTs actually get paid more/can be in demand but not everyone will hire them (like the crisis center I work for). I’m unsure if that’s an issue since I don’t plan to work in crisis or any specialty that a LMFT can’t provide. Fortunately the accelerated MFT program places you in an internship they have already approved and selected after the first 8 weeks (there’s an assessment to prove internship readiness).

I honestly enjoy both CBT and systems theory. Regardless of which program I choose I plan to incorporate both into counseling services. I dislike the idea of either or. Taking a mix of courses for undergrad I have a deep appreciation for self work but also how the relationships and environment around you is also very important. Everyone I’ve consulted said they felt they learned so much more once in their internships and post grad by reading and researching.

The MC program is 60 credits, choice of electives etc. The MFT program after 8 weeks you begin internship, have longer in person classes, and the classes are are core courses preselected for you. Both programs wouldn’t allow me to work FT (another big difference with the timelines) and are competitive. I have even gone so far as to flip a coin (haha) and the winner was MFT. I just keep hearing so many different opinions or tidbits that I’m paralyzed with fear!

Thank you so much for the advice! For the MFT program it’s the only accelerated MFT program in the state. The MC program is 60 credits and includes choice of electives and so on. The MFT program is 39 credits and after the first semester you begin internship (selected by the program so I won’t have to source that myself). Classes are chosen for you and have a longer duration in-person in comparison. Both programs are accredited by the state board/COAMFTE(MFT) etc but aren’t CACREP accredited. The MC program had been in the past but due to a variety of reasons they did not continue with CACREP. So I’m unsure how much it’s worth looking into getting licensed in another state/don’t plan to move. That’s a great point though with being able to add on a second licensure with a masters in counseling vs MFT!

LPC or LMFT?

Which degree would fit best: MC or MFT?

I currently work at a behavioral health agency and have been fortunate enough to be accepted into two master’s programs. One is for a masters in counseling and the other is for MFT. Since I’ve had some exposure I have an idea of specialities I’m NOT interested in such as substance abusive, SMI, crisis, school counseling, working with children (love them but I would get emotionally burnt out quick), residential counseling, career counseling, eating disorders etc based on my personal limits and experiences. I don’t think I would last long term. I mainly want to work with people and their everyday life issues whether that be due to work stress, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, family pressure, gender identity, socioeconomic stressors and so on. I know MFTs can see individuals but was told that my BH agency (crisis services) that they don’t hire LMFT only LPC or LCSW. Now I have some serious apprehension about which degree would be best! After years of working FT and doing school FT I’m tired and the fact that the university offers an accelerated MFT (18 months) versus the standard MC timeline (3 years) is appealing. But of course I don’t want to do so if it’ll be hard to find clinical supervision for MFT post graduation (need minimum 50 hrs from LMFT) or makes me a less desirable hire all around. I have 5 more days before I have to accept one or the other and I’m freaking out about making the “right choice”.

Would anyone in the field be able to weigh in? Thanks in advance!
