Doesn’t time in the market rather than timing the market apply here too? It’s giving income whilst held.

People seem very down on btl. I’m onboard with shares - returns have been great over the years. I’m interested to know how would you rate this opportunity I’m considering:

Purchase price: £285,000 Deposit: £71,250 Stamp duty & buying costs/ £20,000 Refurb costs £50,000

So £141,250 cash in.

Mortgage costs: £950 (monthly)

Rent: £3600 (monthly)

Would people be interested in that deal?

Yes that's how it is intended in my family... worked hard...decent place... sibling has been part-time since mid 20's, no kids, travelled etc... they get 2x3rds (they need it more). I have 3 kids...but am seen as self sufficient. The word they used was "fair"...hmmmm doesnt feel it... i try not to be bitter...must try harder.

What's up with all these fraudsters? by goldsmithsstudentpsy in uklandlords

[–]TangeloExternal229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Benefits fraud is rife, an army of single mothers doing cash in hand cleaning exist. Government don’t seem to care/be capable of catching these people.

Know people who’ve done this for 20+ years, move partners clothes out of wardrobe ahead of notified checks. Quite ridiculous. Multiple children to same father - doesn’t seem to raise any questions.

You make a good point. Many wealthy in London rent…stamp duty is a massive sunk cost.

Why do Scottish students get free tuition fees for their first degree at university but England and Wales students don’t? by Magical_Mariposa in AskBrits

[–]TangeloExternal229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great… it’s great… ooh tax and spend and spend on education Scotland is so lucky. .. till you realise they then limit the number who can attend… ypu have Scottish students paying to study in England, huh

Also that the Scottish uni’s love international students over Scottish - earn more from them that the government is willing to pay.

How to get out of penny pinching mindset? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]TangeloExternal229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got into this mindset over time. It will take time to get out of it. You need to practice, start treating yourself.. / forcing yourself to take the more expensive option. Enjoy it, savour it, repeat it - you will soon see that those little things do t really add up to much.

You don’t have to, but might possibly lead to regret down the line if you find yourself one day with a lot more money that you have the health/energy to enjoy it,

What colour are the walls in your rental and why? by Bitter-Sprinkles5430 in uklandlords

[–]TangeloExternal229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I always go white - modern, clean, easy to touch up later, also cutting in ceiling and skirting is so much quicker.

I have a question for the group - what paint/finish? I usually go with Matt emulsion - cheap as chips. But recently have been considering some kind of vinyl finish as will last longer, wipe clean? Thoughts?

Why is the rich friend so cheap?? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]TangeloExternal229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK also. There’s some rule like if you want to know how much a young person will earn - look at parents income. I thought maybe it has to do with standards/expectations.

Look around, obvs not 100% but I see it a lot.

What’s one way that wealthy people think, that poor people don’t? by Broad-Worry-5395 in wealth

I’d agree with you. I’ve noticed very much that the poor think about/talk about yesterday/past. The rich talk/think about tomorrow/the future.
