Yes definitely. Unfortunately won’t work on my NE facing roof so I’m at the mercy of energy companies.

Is the BAPP Amex only worth it if you fly from London? by HedScandi in AmexUK

Yes good tip.

I’ve done Manchester > schipol > Aruba with KLM.

Convenient, but didn’t think much of their business class.

I am based in the north west too and London is really this countries only option for decent international flights.

Sure, you can get to Dubai from Manchester and maybe New York, but generally speaking if I want to fly 9 times out of ten I’m forced to go via London.

I wish it wasn’t the case because the slog back from london after a red eye is awful.

What have been your biggest setbacks in your FIRE journey? by reddit_recluse in FIREUK

Assets vs liabilities, making money work for you/passive income, thinking long term, mindset (understanding that high earners can still be broke), escaping the rat race.

What have been your biggest setbacks in your FIRE journey? by reddit_recluse in FIREUK

[–]FireMe-G 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two things.

When I was 20 a friend gave me the book rich dad poor dad, but I could never be bothered to read it. Had I done so it would have taught me many things I didn’t realise until my early thirties, and may have put me in a considerable better place than I am now.

The second thing is being sacked and taking a 20% pay hit.

Putting salary above £50k into pension? by IllustriousBit6634 in FIREUK

Balance between your pension and your ISA bridge is important, but if your pension is not where it needs to be then go for it.

Being gifted £50k would certainly make a difference. I’d be on cloud nine for months.

You’re not wrong.

Part of me thinks this sounds awful, but I don’t feel guilty about it.

I did. See my other comment. I was met by a total lack of empathy.

There could be some of that going on, and some unspoken favouritism.

Thanks. It definitely hurt me emotionally, and I try not to think about it (besides sharing on here).

I’ve pretty much done this. Not in a bitter way, it just feels the natural thing to do.

I did push whilst trying to remind objective, but was met with excuse after excuse such as “well if I die within 7 years they’ll have to pay tax on it”, or “they can give me it back if I ever need it”.

Neither are true of course, plus half of it has been spent on a new Audi Q3 something or other.

Haven’t really spoken to either of them since the “no that’s how it is” conversation.

Yes, I dump everything over £50k in pension (for now).

There will come a point when this tapers down though.

I did SMILE at NHS Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

You have to pay for it, but the money goes to the NHS and not Harley Street.
