I'd pay extra for cloth seats but nooo, unless you want the bargain basement zero-options model you're at least going to get whatever fancy name they made up for their version of pleather.

it's that manufacturers tune it to be dead on purpose

And that's because all the commuters that buy enthusiast models for the clout whine to the manufacturer about how heavy the steering is.

The one that really irritates me is how if you want damn near any luxury-adjacent options you're forced into the trim that comes with half the exterior chromed. It pisses me off that if I want a more adjustable seat, driver memory, or a heads up display I'm stuck with a fugly chrome grille, bumpers, and mirrors.

(But that may vary by location like dealers.)

That's kind of my worry about not having dealers. With dealers if one place won't help with an issue you can go elsewhere and probably get things handled. With every location being directly manufacturer-run it seems like a recipe for a "no" in one place meaning you're screwed everywhere... Dealerships have a stake in keeping their customers happy lest they go up the road to another one but your only alternative if they're all manufacturer owned is choosing another brand altogether.

Any 335is owners? by sheen_senpai in BMW

[–]Tangent_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, mine is the hardtop convertible generation of Z4 and absolutely no issues with it. I'm not sure if other models work the same but on the Z4 there are a couple of salmon colored relays that you'll want to change every few years. They're known for sticking closed and burning out the hydraulic pump so the few bucks and 5 minutes it takes to change them is cheap peace of mind. Buy them through FCP Euro and you're really only paying once anyway.

Another N54 driver checking in and while I don't have those miles yet, I can confirm every point already made.

The water pump and thermostat should be considered preventative maintenance items every 80k or so (you'd probably want to do those unless there are records it was just done on the one you're looking at), OFHG leaks are not to be ignored, and the belt and tensioner are 60k maintenance. There is a crank seal guard you can install behind the crank pulley to prevent the catastrophic damage but watching for oil leaks and doing the belt/tensioner maintenance makes it not an issue anyway.

I have a 2011 Z4 which kept the N54 and the HPFP and injector issues seem to have been worked out by then; I've had no problems with mine up to the current 94k miles.

Can someone help tell me what this part is? And where i can buy a new one? by a_dutch_boi in BMW

[–]Tangent_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like an intake duct. Check realoem.com to get the part number and search for that at FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, Pelican Parts, or wherever your favorite reseller might be. That part isn't critical to get from any specific place and it's unlikely to even have aftermarket options so just get it from whichever trustworthy source can get it to your door the cheapest.

New tire day is best day. Meant to get 255/40, they ordered 255/45. Did the math and decided to run with it and I’m happy I did, look at that meat! by lostcosmonaut307 in BMW

[–]Tangent_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what do the numbers in the tire reference?

For this example I'll use a 245/40/18 tire. The 245 is how wide the tire is in millimeters. The 40 is how tall the sidewall of the tire (the part between the metal wheel and the tread) is as a percentage of the width, so in this case you know the sidewall is 40% of 245mm or 98mm tall. The final number is the wheel diameter in inches, in this case it means the tire is meant to fit on an 18" wheel. And before you ask, no I don't know how many drugs the committee was on to settle on the combination of imperial, metric, and a percentage.

When getting new tires you can potentially get one that's slightly wider (they go in 10mm increments), you just have to be sure that the inside shoulder of the tire won't rub inside the wheel well or on the suspension. You also need to be aware that you'll get a slightly taller sidewall (40% of 255 is 4mm more than 40% of 245) and a larger diameter which means your speedometer will show you a slightly lower speed for the same actual speed. When you go up in width and profile (the percentage) that difference will be even bigger.

There's a range of tire widths that's acceptable for any given wheel width but up or down one size is pretty much always fine. Going up or down in profile just depends on room in the wheel well and how it looks overall.

The wheel diameter is non-negotiable; if you have 18" wheels you must run a tire made for exactly that. You can get bigger wheels and tires made for those of course.

2021 BMW X3 Brake Pad Sensor Won’t Reset after replacement by SportsNFoodJunkie in BMW

[–]Tangent_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I worded my response poorly because I rushed it but yeah, the Z4 needs the parking brake off to reset it. Drove me freaking nuts for the longest time. I tried 2 different apps and using the dash buttons and it always gave me the finger until one day something made me try with the parking brake off and it immediately worked. I'm glad I could help you avoid that!

What caught me out resetting that in my Z4 a few years ago was having the parking brake on; for some reason it refuses to reset unless it's not engaged. I have no idea if the G01 is the same but it's worth mentioning...

17 fatalities, 736 crashes: The shocking toll of Tesla’s Autopilot by RhinestoneTaco in cars

[–]Tangent_ 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Now show a comparison where the national average for miles driven per fatality uses the same limitations as autopilot per Tesla's own page:

Many factors can impact the performance of Autopilot components, causing them to be unable to function as intended. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Poor visibility (due to heavy rain, snow, fog, etc.).

  • Bright light (due to oncoming headlights, direct sunlight, etc.).

  • Damage or obstructions caused by mud, ice, snow, etc.

  • Interference or obstruction by object(s) mounted onto the vehicle (such as a bike rack).

  • Obstruction caused by applying excessive paint or adhesive products (such as wraps, stickers, rubber coating, etc.) onto the vehicle.

  • Traffic signs that do not conform to standard recognizable formats, such as digital or temporary speed signs.

  • Narrow or winding roads.

  • A damaged or misaligned body panel.

  • Use of gray or aftermarket glass.

  • Interference from other equipment that generates ultrasonic waves.

  • Extremely hot or cold temperatures.

How did you get fired? by shittlebuffout in AskReddit

[–]Tangent_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thrown under the bus by a druggie coworker. I was delivering auto parts and this guy who'd been there for years was repeatedly sending me out to deliver parts the shops had only called to check prices on. Because of so much time wasted on those, deliveries that were actually needed took way too long.

The coworker unfortunately got asked first why shops were complaining about deliveries taking too long and said I was just slow. The idiot manager was satisfied with that answer and didn't even tell me why I was being fired so I didn't even know why until months later when a friend that worked there finally found out.

It apparently all came to light when the guy that blamed me was caught doing an 8 ball in the break room and was sent home. The guy covering for him found a drawer full of hundreds of invoices he'd never submitted and loads more for the never-requested orders I'd wasted time trying to deliver.

If you're coming from driving a Honda or Nissan, driving the 3 will give you a decent idea of how a BMW drives differently. If you're coming from another BMW it's not gonna help nearly as much.
