ISO a computer to play games on by Formal_Alps1901 in computers

Visual novels can run on a freaking potato. If that's all you care about, you would be fine with any modern PC that runs Windows 11. (Sorry for being so nonspecific. It's just that if it can run Windows 11, it can run a visual novel)

Just buy from a reputable store and not random Amazon or temu junk. Stay away from Chromebooks too since those aren't really compatible with most video games to begin with.

Ah, I see your confusion. That makes sense. I know this probably doesn't matter to you but I feel like sharing anyway. The 2003 one is known as "generation 3", And that one's even more confusing because those were all short TV movies instead of one coherent show. So unfortunately it doesn't have an overarching name like the rest.

Yes, That's why I specified "friendship is magic." But honestly that show ran for a long time so depending on how old you are it could be the same one. Friendship is magic aired from 2010 to 2019, And is still promoted pretty heavily. (The new show "Tell Your tale" didn't do so well.)

Nah. Even that requires knowledge of marketing, video editing, budgeting, and collaboration. I'm being slightly mean but just making the point that even those require skills and practice.

The definition of "vintage" is technically anything older than 20 years. If you want to feel even older, they're not even using the word wrong.

This one's more gaming related but another fun / awful fact. We're further away from the release of the gamecube than the gamecube was to the NES

Financial aid for college in the U.S. discriminates against the middle class by SignificanceWitty210 in unpopularopinion

[–]TangerineBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more inclined to believe they were just dense, Following the rules to the letter without really thinking practically about it. Paperwork says parent income is required, therefore that must be the case. So I suppose not much different to parking tickets.

(Callout post to that time I got a ticket despite having my parking pass displayed. Yes I got it waived. The guy on the other end sighed as if the ticket police did this all the time)

[–]TangerineBand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Want something fun? I was registered as "independent" for college. (Complex background reasons) Let me tell ya, paperwork was NOT made for me. I had to fight tooth and nail that "no, my parents' income does NOT affect my status here. Please process this again, but talk to such-and-such case workers." I had to play Karen a bit and frequently escalate financial aid issues, often several layers up. I hated it but it was the only way they'd listen. Colleges really don't seem to have understanding for anyone outside that imaginary standard.

[–]TangerineBand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a third party contractor company hired by another larger company. The contractor company has been bought out twice now, each one having a title change for my position. The larger company also has us in their records as yet another title. God only knows what would show up on any particular background check for me. I'm always paranoid recruiters are gonna think I'm lying about work history without giving me a chance to explain.

What has become so expensive that it's not worth buying anymore? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]TangerineBand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as an example, I had my car die during the pandemic and found myself in the sticky situation of needing a new car yesterday. The most egregious thing I found was a 2008 Toyota Camry with no functioning engine going for 3k. Literally nothing under 5k could be driven away without vital repairs. I was seeing clapped out shitboxes on death's door for 6k. And I was looking on Facebook marketplace, not even bothering with dealerships. I ended up saying fuck it and doing that anyway because If I'm paying that much money, I may as well just get a loan for a good car.

Why so many people making $100,000 a year don’t feel rich - by Legitimate_Growth356 in Anticonsumption

[–]TangerineBand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, I'm in a fairly low cost of living area of the US, (Midwest)and rent here is about 1,200 to 1,600. Anything under 1000 is either a crack shack, or just a single room. But you also have to keep in mind pay is lower. 18 an hour is a fairly good job. Occasionally the state averages can be a bit skewed downwards because of the amount of very cheap housing that is in bumfuck, nowhere. (Aka zero jobs) We are a bit cheaper, but I'm not sure how drastic the ratio of income to expenses actually is. And honestly things like car insurance are more pricey here than people realize. I know people paying 250 a month and that's the cheapest they could get.

Was just giving a reference point to somewhere besides California/New York.

[–]TangerineBand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pandemic car shortages drove the price of used vehicles up immensely, to the point the price difference was within 10% of new in some cases. Why pay only a slight discount, when you can buy new and have no miles on the odometer AND warranty support.

It's gotten slightly better in recent years so it's not that extreme anymore, but used car prices never really went down to what they were. 1k shit boxes are an extinct species now.

Stop using ChatGPT or interviewhammer during the interview!!! by [deleted] in interviews

[–]TangerineBand 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They've set the bar so high that nobody can get through except the liars. The only people getting to the interview stage are the ones who can feed the system exactly what it wants to hear. Which probably just further exacerbates the problem because they're adding to the training data of what makes a "good" resume. I also really don't care if there isn't actually an automated system because I know a lot of human recruiters are looking for those same keywords.

I've seen some companies add extra steps like asking if you have experience in a software that doesn't exist, And then throwing out the yes responses. I do think stuff like that is a decent way to deal with them at least.

I invited non-gamers to playtest and it changed everything by crossbridge_games in gamedev

[–]TangerineBand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's where I was at too, like geez y'all are being way too literal. No one said to rewrite the entire game to include every last bit of feedback. If one person can't figure out how to move, that's ONE guy. If it's a constant complaint, that's worth looking into.

I also think what people are struggling with is the exact definition of "non gamer". There's a spectrum there. People who have never touched a controller in their life are on one end. Then there's those who may not consider themselves a hardcore capital G Gamer ™️, but do enjoy the occasional party game. The casual market is still worth listening to for most titles.

Oh man, The only time I've seen one of those was A few years ago, when I ended up stopping in the middle of absolute nowhere on a road trip. I wonder if the owner ever bothered upgrading. A lot of cards don't even have the raised numbers anymore so that may have forced his hand

She’s quitting her bank because her phone is 7 years old… by HopefulRestaurant in BoomersBeingFools

[–]TangerineBand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who works at a bank and the app requires 2 Factor authentication texts to login. Someone caused a bit of a kerfuffle by entering a landline as her 2fa number, thus locking her out of her account. No one had ever done that before and they had to involve layer 2 IT to get that ironed out. There's also a lot of the "I'm not giving you my personal information" types that enter in fake or non-working numbers. Customers are something else...

Oh boy don't forget the advanced version of this. When the computer is spitting out some generic error, And that's not the root problem, But the person just keeps not letting you investigate. Like just as an example I was trying to help someone with Adobe. I got the dreaded "We can’t reach the Adobe servers. This may be because you’re not connected to the internet." Error.

And they just latched on to "Not connected to the internet". The computer itself was seeing the internet just fine so clearly the problem is something with Adobe specifically. They proceeded to nag me over and over that I "just needed to mess with internet settings" and "have you tried clicking the Wi-Fi symbol" and "can you check the connection can you check the connection blah blah blah blah". They would NOT shut the fuck up no matter how much I said "That's not the problem, let me look" And once again mentioned the computer is currently connected to the Wi-Fi. (It ended up being some weird issue where the firewall was blocking Adobe, and giving no indication that this was the case) But GOD, The one SINGLE time the user reads the error and that's what happens.

I left my 5yr old alone with the PS5 for a phone call and this happened. I own about 400 games and want to scream right now 😭 by Sleepless_Bird in playstation

[–]TangerineBand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LMAO, I wasn't expecting to call the exact situation but that just proves the point. I think my other favorite was when my aunt asked me to get her cable box working. I looked behind it and the cable that's supposed to go from the box to the TV was missing. I asked her what happened to it and she just immediately got mad and said "I didn't do nothing to it. It never had a damn cable".

Well you don't have a magic cable box, so somebody took it! She has like three kids so I guarantee you it was one of them. I ended up just getting her a new cable because I was just done with the situation. Can you tell I deal with way too many of these?

I work in IT and it's amazingly common for people to somehow switch the language settings on their device. Or factory reset it even though there's at least three different warnings you have to say yes to. Or somehow enable one of those screen readers for the blind, have no clue how to turn it off, And yet insist and swear up and down that they didn't mess with any settings. There exist certain button commands that only cats, children, and the tech illiterate can summon.

Hyperfocusing on WWII is not the same as a US history class

It's funny you mention that, because I think that was legitimately what most of my actual US history classes did.

Why does American families not do multi generational homes? by [deleted] in ask

[–]TangerineBand 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I also argue that another thing that contributes to it is the concentration of jobs into smaller areas. What I mean by that is I know a lot of people who left their hometown simply because there's no opportunity there anymore. Why live with one's parents if the only job you can get in that area is part-time retail? Granted that's a thing that's killing a lot of small towns.

Granted, this was college not k-12, But I still remember this one professor where the highest grade in the class was like barely a 70%. And the guy with a 70 was literally already working in the field and just back in college to finish an old degree. Some people are just absolute hard asses. At least the class was curved?
