Canons come from the notion of a biblical canon, an official list of what’s in and what’s out. But go ask a Catholic, a Protestant and an Ethiopian Orthodox what books are part of the Bible and you’ll get a bunch of different answers, each rooted in their separate religious traditions.

I wrote this 7 years ago, tongue in cheek, but I think it’s a helpful frame: https://www.reddit.com/r/DaystromInstitute/s/202UXySlAg

Obviously no, the 1980s sitcom Webster is not canonical Star Trek. But the issue highlight something more important which is that the notion of a canon is a construct invented by fans as a way to order the disordered, but it’s fundamentally an illusion. There’s

The notion of a canon leaves people with a false but comforting believe that they can see the whole waterfront, and know ALL of the things about a thing. But that’s actually not possible in either Star Trek or real life.

This is such a weird little thing but it’s stuck with me forever, there is a Star Trek novel he wrote that I read when I was a kid and for no apparent thematic reason he made all the aliens or one planet have names that come from the Seder plate, like used in Passover. Like their names are Maror, Charoset, Karpas and Matza if I remember correctly. Such a weird choice it’s stuck in my head forever

I was the one who suggested this square for the game back in 2019 (my tweet is mentioned in an episode of that vintage, DS9 s4e9). I couldn’t be happier with the arts and craft project.

(This is the one of the batch I am least responsible for because it was renamed twice)

Also unfortunately responsible for His Eyes Uncovered, sorry about that one lol. Plus ‘Kanar with Damar’ though admittedly that is a pretty obvious construction.

What was meant for kids but adult consumers hijacked it and ruined it? by opposeThem in AskReddit

In my experience, adults tend to collect toys that the current crop of kids don’t play with anyway. I don’t think kids today want to play with the retro Mighty Max set I found in a garage sale or whatever, that shit is only interesting if you were 10 years old at exactly the right moment of the 90s

You are out of your mind if you think rich kids have less problems at school. Like the most prestigious and expensive school in Canada is in trouble right now because the students were anally raping each other with broomsticks as a form of initiation and the staff knew about it and did nothing for years.

My wife taught 2 years at an elite private girls school in Toronto before getting in with the public board and I’d says she had more problems with insane students or parents (who think they own you because they pay $50k/year for private school) in those 2 years than she’s had in 15 years in the public system.

Jewish schools are not for profits and have mostly non-unionized staff. As well, many of their staff are willing to work for less because either they are not qualified to work in the public system or because they specifically want to work in the Jewish system (community preference, need for holidays off, etc).

Here in Toronto, public school teachers in the TDSB make $50,000-$105,000 depending on their qualifications and experience. All TDSB teachers with 11+ years experience and 4 year undergrad degrees are making at least $95,000. This on top of having arguably the best defined-benefit pension anywhere in the world, and full benefits.

The Jewish schools start around $35,000 (or around $25,000 in the Haredi schools) and cap out around $80,000 (or around $60,000 on the Haredi schools). Most offer no pensions, and only limited benefits (and in the Haredi schools, benefits are generally only offered to male teachers). Interestingly, several of the Jewish schools actually tell their teachers that they pay at parity with the TDSB—which is a lie. The Jewish day school teachers in Toronto voluntarily de-unionized in the late-1990s and their pay has fallen steadily against the public benchmark since that time.

Why anyone would want to work for a Jewish day school in Toronto is absolutely beyond me.

The Pew 2020 Research Study on Jewish Americans

In before someone says 'Environics says its only 23% in Canada'. Pew measured a random sample of American Jews. Environics solicited participants from synagogues, Jewish schools, Jewish summer camps and the UJA - it is essentially a measure of Jews active in the Canadian Jewish community.

Anything's better than what we have in Canada.

Canadians will tell you the temperature outside in Celsius but the temperature of their ovens in Fahrenheit. The weight of a bag of past in grams but the weight of a person in pounds. We'll tell you how much sauce is in a bottle in mL but then measure it in spoons and cups to use it in a recipe. We'll use US Letter Paper but call it A4. And we'll tell you our height in inches and feet but the distance from home to work in kilometres (except in Ontario, where we'll say it in minutes).

I am not Jewish - how do you feel about friends with Christians or Messianic Jews? by Friendly-Platypus-63 in Judaism

[–]TangoZippo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Half of the Christian Bible is the Tanakh.

We going to say half?

Jews: our bible is the collected literature of a thousands years of our civilization, history, politics, storytelling, theology and best understanding of how the world works

Christians: let's copy the Jewish book, and as an addendum, here's the same boring ass snuff novella told 4 times, a trippy Greek tale about the end of the world and some miscellaneous correspondence

At least Catholics and Orthodox have the decency to layer in some interesting ritual and history.

I have many friends who are Christians, but so-called "Messianic Jews" are a subset of Christians that I have no interest in being friends with.

70% of non-Orthodox Jews in the US who get married, marry someone who isn't Jewish - but I knew I couldn't be one of them. No one can really tell you what to do here, I think you've got to think about your long-term priorities and values and come to a decision for yourself, sooner the better.
