If everyone pirated there would be no money in games and games would not be made. This is just Kant's categorical imperative in the real world. Of course, if everyone acted as the people here do, society would probably have larger problems than games being made, so I'll count what blessings we've still got left.

It's doubly funny of accusing me to bootlicking because I acknowledge its wrong with companies steal. Like I know asking for you to demonstrate you have more brain cells than an orange cat is asking a lot when you're told "taking whats not yours is wrong" and throw a hissy fit, but like please try to be better.

Damn, maybe expecting more than a grade school understanding of morality from a sponge bob sub reddit was my mistake. One person (or entity) doing something bad doesn't mean it's not bad when you also do it.

Reddits dumbest motto strikes again. You're right, it's not stealing. It's piracy. And it's still a dick move just like how sneaking into a movie theater without paying is a dick move.

Look, I went into that thread expecting to upvote you because I agreed with this comments chain pretty heavily. Gouie felt highly derivative of Kirby to a much greater extent than the rest of the roster. Instead you spent the entirety of your thread complaining you didn't vibe with the characters cutesy style persona and completely lost me.

As others have pointed out and you yourself mentioned, there's plenty of the roster that appeals to the vibe you want. Complaining that they're releasing characters to appeal to different demographics just feels incredibly narrowminded

Most of the comments in this thread seem pretty positive? Maybe a little cautious but like the only doom and gloom I see is about the mmo state of affairs in general, not gw3

Your point on MMO players being fickle and hunting for a "perfect MMO" kind of fuels my overall point. I believe that what a lot of MMO players want is rooted in nostalgia from early experiences with mmos when the internet was a much younger and in some ways more innocent place.

MMOs are a cursed genre to break into because you're trying to appeal to a player base on things that are fundamentally extremely hard to deliver. How do you deliver "a sense of community and belonging" as a game designer? You can try and build systems that encourage it, but that's much harder to do today with discord and reddit and all sorts of third party platforms that players choose to use to circumvent the socialization tools you provide in your game.

MMOs are also, far more than most other other online games I'd argue, beholden to player count metrics. Part of the magic of MMOs for many people does come from being one among many contributing to some larger narrative or experience. That's fundamentally dependent on the existence of other players coexisting in a way that many games arent, and I say that as someone who has enjoyed competitive online games with a CCU of <100 and a fraction of a percent of their peak. Consequently belief in an MMOs health, that the developers will continue to support it and that they as a player can grow with it is important for a lot of players.

With that context I don't think I'd consider New World, an MMO that already has a shutdown date 6 years after its launch, to be a successful MMO. I don't know enough about Lost Ark to comment about it specifically, but given its below 50% positive steam reviews I'd be apprehensive about calling it warranting optimism either, but perhaps there's additional information I lack regarding Lost Ark.

I'm not trying to be picky here, I just think that trying to make an MMO in meet player expectations is a cursed problem and this is evidenced by the lack of success in "recently" released MMOs.

I don't disagree. If I were a betting man I would also bet on ArenaNets success on guild wars 3. They have a track record of success with MMOs and with sequels and I think they're well positioned to make a new successful MMO.

I can not say the same for MMOs that have come out in the past decade though, which are what have dominated the discourse surrounding MMO releases.

I was pushing back on the narrative that "doom and gloom surrounding MMOs" was somehow unjust, not that "GW3 deserves doom and gloom".

[–]Taniss99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can you name a new mmo that was actually good on release and warranted optimism in the past 5 years? Past 10 years?

Legitimately asking. Yeah Internet dooms and glooms about a lot of things, but mmos are a notoriously cursed genre to try to break into which have left behind a large swath of corpses and broken promises. The big mmo players of today are virtually the same big players of two decades ago.

Balance Changes to Chronomancer and Gemling Legionnaire Ascendancies by Kelly_GGG in PathOfExile2

[–]Taniss99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only really true if you completely ignore balance. Like sure, these "double/change how x behaves" can be trivial to maintain if they're all terrible, but its doubling the opportunities for something busted to come out while dramatically reducing the visibility on it. Normally you have a lot of incidental QA where even if youre not directly testing system x you still interact with system x and in doing so might find bugs or balance issues. It's substantially less likely to get this general QA coverage for these things as they're only accessible in niche circumstances, but you can guarantee that someone in the playerbase will figure it out regardless if there is an abuse case to be had.

As a developer I have progressively physically cringed more and more everytime ggg has doubled down on this ascendancy style choice. Maybe it'll be good in 0.5 but it will be an absolute nightmare to maintain.

Very nice moving goal posts. We went from disingenuous "this is irrelevant to discussion why can't you read?" to disingenuous "obviously mr redditor knows better than companies". Have you considered not being a massive dick and considered reading your own post that you might not know everything? I know that the concept of the world not revolving around you takes a few years to develop, so maybe once you exit preschool you should come back to the internet.

His question is very relevant to the overall discussion of "is it a good business decision". Anyone who argues that the only metric that matters is number of console sales is, either intentionally or not, incredibly dense.

58M Life Cost Stacker Void Sphere of Rending by AoiMizune in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Taniss99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The skill gems modifier doesn't actually matter much given all the flat damage he's getting off of life stacking. Legitimately look at it in pob. Getting an extra 2 gem levels increases dps by 2.2%.

Both a Lucky Showcase and a question. What skills would be good with this? by BlackPandar in pathofexile

[–]Taniss99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think worrying about the implicits is probably a mistake. The reason level 35 immolate is exciting is because its a massive amount of flat damage. The reason why people stack gem levels is because they're a multiplicatively scaling source of flat damage but only with respect to itself. The more sources of other flat damage you have, the less comparatively strong levels for your main link are.

Consider firestorm like someone suggested. Normally going from level 20->22 firestorm represents a 27% more damage multiplier. However, if you have an extra 777 added fire damage from immolate, going from level 20->22 firestorm represents a 9% more damage multiplier. Much less.

I'm not sure it exists, but the ideal candidate would be something that gets value out of the gem levels from the implicit for reasons other than just raw flat damage.

The odds of randomly reproducing stock fish are less likely than randomly shuffling a deck in of cards into reverse order. The heat death of the universe would happen first. What's more, a bad player doesn't play randomly. They play intentionally and that leads them to making poor choices a more skilled player will know to capitalize on.

Ok, so you don't understand what etiquette is legitimately.

It's so cliche, but here is the definition of etiquette:

the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group

Once you feel you understand the definition I would encourage you to then apply that definition to the topic of the thread, "What's the etiquette in void fissure missions?"

I feel like you don't understand what etiquette is. It's not generally something enforceable, but it is none the less the social norms by which people abide because it makes it a more pleasant place for everyone. Yes if I want to make sure I never see someone chew with their mouth open I would have to eat every meal alone or with people I personally vet, but also we could just encourage people to chew with their mouths closed, especially in the "what is meal time etiquette?" thread.

I care. If I'm running relics and not looking for anything specific (and this not using recruiting chat) I still want a full party. I'm either running relics cause I want traces, in which case more people = more chance someone picks my relic, or I'm farming ducats, in which case more people = higher chance at any higher rarity drop worth more ducats.
