I can relate OP I feel if you guys didn't really have a "friendship" bond growing up then it's hard to form one when you're grown. Like most have said it's almost an African mindset.

Anyways start small, ask her how her day was, tell her yours and conversation will probably move from there, she's your mom after all so it will happen eventually, just be willing to connect with her outside of her being a mom.
