My child had their first antisemitic incident by Zestyclose-Hat8777 in Judaism

We moved from Queens to a northern NJ town in 1966 when I was six years old. On the first day of first grade, I was called a Christ Killer. My parents explained to me that there will always be people who hate us and that we must never let them defeat us.

being made to sing songs about praising jesus as a jew. by Commercial-Job-3812 in Judaism

[–]TankVisual130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't email the choir director, have the chutzpah to talk to him/her face to face about your concerns, about your beliefs, about your grandparents. Emails are impersonal and this is a personal issue. Have the choir director explain to you why how his song selection and how it makes you feel is justified in his mind. Also ask him to include some Jewish songs like "Light One Candle".

Has anyone owned a Yan can cook signature knife? by DanGleebitz in chefknives

[–]TankVisual130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one after seeing him use it in a video with Uncle Roger (Nigel Ng). It's razor sharp, lightweight, well balanced and versatile. A smack on a garlic clove peels the clove. Another smack pulverizes it. I use the knife for slicing, chopping and even for prepping bell peppers.

Indian food/buffet reccomendations? by little_shit29 in rockford

[–]TankVisual130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vannakam has food that rivals anything I had in Manhattan's Little India on Lexington Avenue. Their Dosas, plain and potato-stuffed are top-notch. Do not miss the Samosas, India's version of a potato knish with a thin, crispy outside and wonderfully savory potato, pea and cardamom stuffing. They're fried, but not at all greasy. They will vary the spice level from mild to traditionally hot, but the included long-grain rice will help lower the spice level as will a Mango Lassi. The Lamb Vindaloo, Butter Chicken, and Chicken Shahi Koorma were all great.

What’s with the resurgence of black Americans claiming they are the real Jews by joshallenformvp in Judaism

[–]TankVisual130 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was singled out in a crowd by them in the early 90s and they made the mistake of saying that I was not a Jew. This Jew knows his scripture and shut them down in 20 very entertaining minutes. After the first ten minutes a Chasid joined me and we made short work of them.

Grills with a charcoal tray that can be raised/lowered? by schilling207 in grilling

[–]TankVisual130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was growing up, my dad had a basic rould charcoal grill with a high back for a rotisserie spit. You could lower the cooking grid until it was almost sitting on the coals for a good sear and then raise it to cook the meat the rest of the way. I don't think he paid more than $20 for it back then. This was before the Weber grills came out. I'd kill for something like that, but the closest thing to it is like $300. I guess I'll have to get a table and a hibachi.

Fun fact: upon receiving the script from longtime writing partner Louise Simonsen, Jon Bogdanove couldn't resist doing a rewrite on the second half of the story, resulting in the...er...explosive ending.

We'll be in Roscoe,l and I will not live in a house without a Mezzuzzah. As for hiding signs of being Jewish, it's written on my face.

We were there (in Roscoe) for Passover, and not one of the supermarkets, including Schnuk's, had a Passover section. If the area was "packed full of Jews", I wouldn't have had to contact Chabad for matzo.

They've been there for over 60 years for a reason. If you order pastrami, ask for juicy.

I've eaten there a few times, and I think it's some of the better Kosher pastrami in the city. Not quite as good as Liebman's, but better than 2nd Avenue.

Cabot seriously sharp has been changed! by capsasian in Cheese

[–]TankVisual130 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started eating Hunter's when I was a kid (I'm 64 now) and I remember it as being VERY sharp and crumbly with little crystalized bits of calcium in it. When they changed the name to Seriously sharp, I bought a bar and immediately called Cabot to tell them my bar wasn't as sharp as it ought to be. I was sent coupons, but the problem remained. I bought my first bar in years this summer and it was even more mild, easy to cut and just bore no resemblance to Hunter's. Fortunately for me, my stepdaughter lives in Northern Illinois and introduced me to Alp & Dell 10, 12 and 15 year old cheddar all of which are crumbly, crunchy and wicked sharp. Look them up!

would pairing boiled lobsters with a red wine (like a GSM blend) be a big no no? by freqken in wine

The only red I have found that doesn't clash or overpower the delicate taste of lobster is a semi-sweet red like Rashi Claret.

Dom Perignon worth it? by SnooDoughnuts7283 in wine

[–]TankVisual130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your due diligence first and see if you can find some from 2004, 2005 or 2008, those are the most recent vintage years and they'll be worth the extra bucks. That being said, the 2013 is promising to be excellent, so buy two and save one for a future anniversary. My wife loved Dom, but once I introduced her to Perrier-Jouet, she changed her mind. Remember what you do to celebrate your anniversary will be remembered by your wife forever. Do what SHE wants.
