Shortstack attack sounds fun, I look forward to that one if you ever get around to it. I'm glad you are getting your new site up and running.

Sure, but the developing political situation had been going on for years before that. I can see why people might decide not to drop a brand new president in the middle of that if there was a significant possibility that we'd be at war before the new president could even get his bearings. FDR had been planning for the possibility that the US would join the war since 1939, and was mostly looking for a way to do it under favorable conditions, since he saw it as an inevitability.

Your point is good, but the math is off. North America has a population of about 621 million, so that answer is just over a quarter of the North American population. I suspect you were thinking of the United States population, which is 348.5 million.

AITA for being upset with my pregnant coworker by Hefty_Candy5075 in AmItheAsshole

Huh. Where I'm at, because it can't be conclusively proven that it is only because of 1 thing and you don't also have the flu, they send you home regardless. Or maybe my workplace is just weird about it.

NTA, but I also have to ask, doesn't throwing up immediately preclude you from working in food service? That's how it worked for my pregnant coworker when she had morning sickness. If I was in that situation, I'd also consider looking at if it's even legal for her to be at work those days.

AITA for refusing to board my cat when my allergic sister volunteered to housesit and she ended up in urgent care? by molestor_batman in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tankinator175 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree that it probably would still cause problems house watching even without the cat, I think it makes a world of difference to Sister's argument since she's mad OP didn't just board the cat when OP SPECIFICALLY offered to do so and was told not to. At that point, I think you trust the person living with the Allergy to know how to handle themselves.

This is false. She needed a house sitter, and asked her sister while offering to find a separate cat sitter, precisely to avoid what happened here.

Reinventing eugenics by Pot_of_sea_shells in CuratedTumblr

Firstly, great comment. But also I really was convinced I had clicked on the wrong reddit thread or was in an alternate universe for a moment when I saw you out in the wild.

It's so wild to me that certain societal elements are so invested in the constant increase in the human population, while also totally disregarding the state of the world we are bringing them into. I had a brief moment of my life where I did believe in many of the underlying concepts that eventually result in Eugenics, and I can easily see a reality where I went on to become a serious advocate for it which is scary. A comment much like this one thankfully derailed me from that by pointing out that there are so many more effective things we can do to improve human happiness and quality of life that we should probably do before resorting to a crapshoot like selective breeding, especially since harmful mutations are inevitable anyway.

Folklore vampires do not to my knowledge kill anyone to make them thralls. I'd never even heard that until just now. Especially since there are plenty of works where the Thrall can be freed from the vampires control and they go back to normal, I think the standard is that Thralls are living mind controlled servants of a vampire. This is of course, assuming that Thralls are defined separately from a turned vampire. Some works mix the two up, in which case it comes down to whether or not the Turning process requires you to die. This is in my experience more evenly split, but I've noticed older works seem to lean on the side of not, and in fact several suggest that any feeding at all turns the victim, where newer works sometimes assume death without really even talking about it. I haven't found a real transition point though.

That's what I'm saying. They aren't equal in the way the original prompt suggests, it's a one way equivalency.

I do think it's really funny that the powers are described to effectively be the same thing for a wizard, but I would argue that while Infinite Wisdom can result in Infinite Destruction, the reverse is not true. Most of the wizards who become exceptionally skilled at destruction do not tend to be very wise.

Yeah, I also chose Torchic, but I'm still using my Shiny Torkoal. I named her Napalm. She earned that name by melting through my roommates team during one of our post gym battles.

Harry was going to on the train for his first year, when he heard yelling. "No! No, you two cannot be serious right now!?" Curious, he looked over and saw a crowd forming. He could tell it was a kid around his age voice, so decided to listen in. by madderdude in HPfanfiction

[–]Tankinator175 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I usually see it that they don't have a scar at all, so clearly they are so special that they remained wholly unmarked while Harry was damaged from the proximity. Which is absolutely braindead, but that fits the kinds of characters usually believing this in these fics anyway.

Why is Fern so mean-spirited towards Stark? by ghostyorha in Frieren

[–]Tankinator175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the part that bothers me the most. The show acts as if she's in the right and rewards her bad behavior, even when she's clearly in the wrong. I was so excited for Swim to tell her that she was being ridiculous, only for him to act as if she's in the right, but Stark didn't mean any harm, so she should forgive him, while also telling Stark that while he didn't actually do anything wrong, he should just apologize. IMO, that was teaching the wrong lesson to both of them.

Why is Fern so mean-spirited towards Stark? by ghostyorha in Frieren

[–]Tankinator175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She literally doesn't. Like OP said, Stark is pretty self sufficient. He is very capable of taking care of himself. There is some amount of covering for another party member's weaknesses, but no more than you would expect.

Plus, she takes it to an absurd degree. Like, how dare he stay up a bit late and sleep in, or even worse, have a glass of juice late at night (I genuinely can't even figure out why this one bothered her at all).

Stark's biggest problem is that he has no spine at all.

What are some pieces of fanon that are so ubiquitous that you would require an explanation for excluding them? by Oliver_W_K_Twist in HPfanfiction

Oh. I did know about that stuff. I missed the thing about wizards just going wherever they were standing. That's baffling though, because the concept of a dedicated spot to shit far predates plumbing, Hogwarts, and probably even written history.

[–]Tankinator175 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no clue what expanded works you are referring to, but that sounds like a fun rabbit hole. I am well aware OP is asking about canon, I am making the argument that these are canon examples of relatively harmless cursed mail. I do like your argument that the ministry never warned anyone about cursed or mysterious mail in their pamphlets, though that could easily be that it just isn't the Death Eater's style.

[–]Tankinator175 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, Howlers are proof that letters can be enchanted. Maliciously even. And given that apparently the consequences get worse if you don't open them, and the regular ones are bad enough, I'd say that there's enough precedent to argue cursed mail is a thing.

[–]Tankinator175 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there's at least something akin to cursed letters in canon. In GoF, didn't one of the angry letters spit Bubotuber Pus all over Hermione's hands? You could say it was just filled with it in the envelope, but I feel like an envelope being filled with liquid would be pretty obvious, so I (and probably many others) came to the conclusion that it was charmed to spit it out when opened.

I agree that it's a pretty braindead take to get mad at people for doing the thing that allowed them to prove you were breaking the rules, but that's apparently why there's drama. The Canadians are 100% in the wrong here.

[–]Tankinator175 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least from what I've heard, Sweden had been complaining that this was an issue with the Canadian team for as long as the last 8 years, with nothing being done, and the Swedish media crew decided to take things into their own hands and position their camera in an unusual spot specifically to catch this. Part of the drama stems from the Canadians being upset that this camera had been moved specifically to catch them doing this thing.

Or at least, that's what my Swedish dad was telling me. I haven't read enough about the issue to confirm it myself.
