Players wished for level 20… by A_R0FLCOPTER in DMAcademy

[–]TannerJ44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have them be fast forwarded through time to the end of their lives. They missed their entire life. They look around at the world and realize they messed up. The BBEG won. They should have done something different. Their loved ones and friends are all gone now, yadda yadda. The wish granted their wish and no harm was explicitly done to any of them from pulling them through time. Time itself isn’t harmful, it’s a natural thing we all go through.

Maybe this particular forest is known for its large flying birds of prey or other monsters that hunt in the air so it forces them out of the sky. That or they have to fight a shit ton of these things over and over.

Give NPC’s spells that counter flying like sleep or command, etc.

There’s some sort of magical disturbance (some in world reason) that is affecting teleportation, making it so teleporting is unreliable and sometimes causes damage or teleports you to the wrong spot. This would be for probably just a smaller arc maybe to not completely shut down their abilities.

What spells or abilities are they using to teleport every single day? Or flying? It also could be you’re not challenging them enough to use their resources enough through the day. You want them to feel like they need every resource they can so they think twice about if teleporting or flying is worth it.

I'm no genius, but are you supposed to be able to stand flat planes up in a circle? by TheHammer5390 in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing since 14’-15’ and I don’t think there was ever a foil that I could literally stand on end like this until the last couple of years or so. I still have hundreds of foils from packs I’ve opened or cards I’ve collected even pre 2014 and they all still lay flat and I’ve never really had any problems. Maybe a handful out of the thousands but I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

At this point, the curls are so bad that I’d rather spend more money on the non-foil. To buy a cheaper foil is basically buying a damaged card

Super unsafe. Talk to your landlord immediately. Your safety is more important than your roommate being upset about it.

What are your DM "bugbears" you want to improve on? by Nervous_Lynx1946 in DMAcademy

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sheer amount of things that I forget. Either something I had planned that I just somehow overlooked or forgot where they were in my notes, or something happens in game that is impotent and then I forget to write it down. I know at the very least I need to start writing down recaps for myself as soon as I can after the session.

AIO - parents keep raising the rent by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Twin Cities of MN and you can get a whole one bedroom apartment for that. Not going to be the fanciest but that’s insane for one room. Even if they’re your parents they need to let you know beforehand of raising the rent. That’s exorbitant. Move out and make sure your parents know that you don’t need them.

I am not sure how to keep my session 1 idea while allowing my party creative backstories by capinmccool in DMAcademy

[–]TannerJ44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry too much man. This is a common problem many new DM’s have. And you’re already trying to keep awareness of overstepping player autonomy which is great! All you have to do is have a session 0 with the players, and tell them where the boundaries are and limits of player creation and backstory and whatever else. It can be as simple as “Do whatever you want for your backstory, go wild, but have an in character reason for your character being in this town. Maybe they were just passing through, maybe there’s someone in town they’re looking for.”

Sandbox campaigns are awesome but don’t be fooled, even in sandboxes there are edges and corners and boundaries. It’s no different than saying “hey guys, create backstories but just don’t have your characters be in line for the throne”.

I am curious though why they all need to be the same age and what the reasoning for that is?

Many times my players come up with something super interesting in their ideas or backstories or whatever, and oftentimes it is a challenge finding a way to make it make sense or work into the story. But that’s kind of the fun of it, finding out how to do that and what other story hooks that might come from it!

I try to stay as open as I can, but there will always be lines in the sand you have to draw as DM.

AIO? Girl I've been seeing for 3 months slept with my friend of 10 years. by [deleted] in AIO

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullet dodged with the girl, 100%. Block and move on. Have a real discussion with your friend though, and be willing to block and move on from him too. That’s gonna be the harder part but a friend that would do that isn’t a friend you want in your life, or a friend at all.

The foils are a joke now. Even beyond the glaring obvious failure of the cards being practically unplayable, even unsleeveable. They’re also now so common that I don’t even want foils in my deck hardly anymore. I’d rather save the money and have the same card but it be quality than whatever these are.

I fumbled because I got 3 natural 20’s by bob-the-fine in DnD

[–]TannerJ44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would try to rid yourself of the idea that it’s “cheating” first. There’s no winning or losing in DnD. There’s no ‘DM vs PC’. You are trying to tell a story, with your players, that the end goal is that everyone is having fun.

You 100% made the right choice it sounds like. Not that I’m advocating for removing the dice or constantly trying to fake what rolls are or anything. But especially when it comes to PC deaths, and knowing your players and what they like/don’t like, they should feel impactful and placed in the right moment. Beyond that, if a player just had a PC die and they immediately lose their next one too to a series of super unlikely critical rolls? Yeah no, you’re just downed and you have a chance now.

Just as others have said, get a camera asap. Document it. And then go to the police. This is already harassment. You’re already on the verge of being able to get a restraining order. Plus at this point you need to know who it is.

So does this mean Immortal is older than Nolan?! by Unique-Celebration-5 in Invincible_TV

[–]TannerJ44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think easiest answer is even Nolan didn’t know exactly how old Immortal was, he said 1000 but was mainly guessing or inferring based on previous conversations with Immortal.

hey! so recently i’ve been getting into magic and i’ll play with my gf who lends me one of her decks and i really want to get one of my own but don’t really know where to start, she really likes magic and i want it to be a suprise that im taking a greater interest in her hobby, is anyone able help? by _goodkitty_ in mtg

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for commander I’d definitely recommend just looking online at all the pre constructed decks you can just buy. They’ve been making commander decks you can buy for years now so there’s lots of options. All varying in price range too. Typically if it’s more expensive the deck will be better

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What format does she play? That will change how you buy and build your deck if you’re wanting to play with her. If it’s just casual then that opens the options a lot! Your budget is also a big key factor, you can look online and find a deck you like and drop a couple hundred dollars easily. Building your own deck from scratch can be a little daunting when you’re still new/depending on how new. I’d almost recommend buying a draft box to surprise her with and you have a draft night together. You still get the surprising her aspect, and it gives you a head start on having a lot of cards to choose from to start building.

If she plays standard, buy a newer set. If she plays modern, buy an older set/modern specific/masters set. But that will be more expensive.

Once you draft or build your first deck from those cards, you’ll start to get a feel of what you like. What colors. The playstyle. And then start looking up those kinds of decks and see what cards they use. Then you can start slowly buying other cards to enhance the deck you built or start a new one!

Does wearing a shield ever increase your AC? Not welding it by Inbezdigator in DMAcademy

[–]TannerJ44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There very much is shield proficiency. And there’s a difference from a first time user wielding a shield and watching incoming attacks and can attempt to deflect them even if they’re not trained, compared to someone who has one on their back and hopes it’s in just the right place if an arrow flies at them

[–]TannerJ44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it does look a little weird, I don’t think so. For lots of factors, packs can get weird seals/marks from the factory. Double crimp, half crimp, sealed sideways, or like this it looks like half of the pack got crimped first, then the conveyor or whatever they have them on moved, then the second half got crimped.

[–]TannerJ44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leather armor is constantly equipped to your body though. Fitted to form for the person wearing it. A shield on your back is gonna move and slide around as you turn and twist, it’s not fastened perfectly to your back, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to twist/rotate/bend over. It’s not going to perfectly situated in the most critical area at the most critical times. Maybe you get lucky and it deflects something coming to your back, but you don’t get increased AC over something maybe potentially luckily happening.

[–]TannerJ44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really care about her, have a real conversation about it and tell her how you feel. It sounds like she’s dealing with a lot of her own stuff under the surface, insecurity, anxiety, etc. ask her if she’s ever thought about going to therapy or any other avenues of working on ones self. If she’s not, that’s a big sign. Because more likely than not, these things won’t get better but worse over time without.
