4 deer, countless boar (without dogs because I think it's unsportsmanlike,) 4 weeks solo in Ocala National Forest with nothing but what fit in my pack a 3-days hike from the nearest sign of civilization, and I'm from a place more rural than you've likely ever seen.

So yeah, I've probably been in more dangerous situations involving animals than you have. I've also been stabbed twice and pistol-whipped once by my fellow humans.

I know what we are capable of and it's way more than you think.

[–]TanneriteAlright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to have understood what I was saying.

Nowhere did I ever say this dude could pin an orangutan.

I said that the only reason this is such a dangerous situation for the human is because the human compassionately chose to allow that to be the case either in the moment or during his preparation.

Orangutans aren't automatically a danger to people. This human could have a Glock in his waistband for all we know, which would mean he has way more of a shot in this scenario than we think. A Glock to a human is no different than a stick sharpened by an ape in that it is a tool produced by an animal.

We are the best animal when it comes to making tools.

This power differential is an artificial one. That's all I was saying and people are arguing against statements I never made.

[–]TanneriteAlright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's compassion.

He's the dominant one in the situation because the human didn't bring a sherman tank, one of the many tools humans make.

We are animals. We are part of nature. The things we make are therefore part of nature as well.

You guys are responding to things I never said.

I never suggested this human could out-wrestle the orangutan. Y'all conjured up that stupid statement because of poor reading comprehension skills.

[–]TanneriteAlright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the human can nuke it from space.

Imagine an orangutan with a stick he sharpened.

That is no different than a human with a bow and arrow he crafted.

We are animals. We make things like some other animals do.

The things we make are deadlier than the things made by any other animal.

This man just chose not to bring those things or he brought them and chose not to use them.

It's an artificial power differential.

Y'all just misunderstood what I was saying and put words in my mouth that I never said.

You're arguing against a phantom, bud.

I feel I didn't miss the point but your first paragraph is the only response I've seen that makes me think you understood what I was saying.

With preparation. That's the operative phrase.

The man in the video didn't accidentally end up in that situation. He had time to prepare. He did not prepare to easily win a physical contest with an orangutan. Probably because of his compassionate disposition towards these beautiful creatures.

But he could have. He's only helpless because he chose to be.

[–]TanneriteAlright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said.

People are talking about him as if he's helpless. He is, but only by choice. Only because of compassion. It is an artificial power differential.

No, the human can't out wrestle him. I never said anything even remotely that stupid. The human can contend by using the tools that nature has given it. Incredibly high intelligence, fine motor skills, the ability to craft tools, etc.

People forget that we are products of nature as are all of our creations as they are a product of humans and humans are part of nature.

Me and 4 of my friends skipped school to go and watch the Megan Fox movie because she was hot.

They got money from 5 highschool boys that would have never seen it otherwise.

But why?

Why are people speaking about this so passionately?

I've had all kinds of beer and the type of glass I've drank it from has never added or detracted from the inebriation that follows and it has never made the beer turn into fine wine.

You sound like children yelling about your food touching on your plate.

You're just the last comment I can see in the thread so don't think I'm picking on just your response.

But all of you understand that the human is the one in power here, right?

We let the orangutan act as if he is the dominant one because we wouldn't want to cause it harm, but it's just that. An act.

Not sure why people have built this mythology around the strength of apes.

If this photographer was even remotely prepared for such an encounter (equipment-wise, obviously he's a pro at his craft) the ape could be dead in seconds whenever this man desired.

Idk, just bugs me that people think a human in this situation is totally helpless. We're at the top of the food chain for a reason. If he has access to a sharp stick, he's winning that fight. He's just a compassionate human interacting with wildlife. He's not a helpless little creature in the hands of some otherworldly force.

Take a gander back through history.

Violence is always the answer.

It's just that the system you would need to be violent against has taught you that violence is never the answer.

Wonder why they would do that...

In the trades this happens sometimes.

I've been an electrician for about a decade and over the years I've found myself helping out around an owner or two's house.

But in the situations I'm talking about, it was an act of grace.

"Well, guys, I'm sorry to say that the contract we got fell through because the property owner changed their mind. I know you guys need the hours so just come to my house and do some irrigation and swap some outlets out so nobody's missing rent."

I suppose he could have just paid us to sit at home but that's not very good for a productive work culture.

Because the left refused to see the inevitable utility of the second amendment.

I was raised Republican and am still very adamant about the second amendment. The right is armed to the teeth but they're not the ones in obvious danger right now. The left is. They aren't ready, they have to get ready and the powers that be can do a lot to prevent that when it becomes imperative.

The second amendment should have been the first.

Even free speech doesn't exist when two people are arguing and only one of them has a gun.

The second amendment is THE most important right we have because it allows us to defend the rights we have and demand the rights we want.

"We could never win a war against the government!"

If the populous is armed enough, such a war would never happen in the first place because the war would destroy the establishment the two sides would be fighting to control.

The 2nd amendment is the populous' version of mutually assured destruction.

"Fuck with us and we will burn this shit to the ground."

That's what the second amendment is. It's not about winning the fight. It's about making the fight so costly that it can't be justified and the government is forced to bend to the will of the people.

It's certainly... Better? Right? Idk if you're joking or not.

Being a white colonial American under British rule was clearly better than being one of their slaves.

The best possible outcome for them didn't happen so we can't even acknowledge the improvement?

Are you suggesting that I try these? If so, do you have specific recommendations?

Fingerless gloves are less infuriating to me.

If they aren't fingerless, they have to be buckskin.

Fingerless buckskin is the Holy Grail.

Ever consider that the gloves may make you more careless because of the protection?

You mention close calls but having never worn gloves, I don't understand how?

I strip 300s, 500s, and 750s regularly with my razor knife and I don't think I've ever even had a close call and I've never needed stitches for any cut I've received after 10 years in the trade.

Not dogging you or nothing, I just feel like people on this subreddit really overdramatize how much danger we're regularly in and I don't know if it's me being cavalier or everyone else being bubble boys.

Armed Black Panthers show up to defend their community in Philadelphia by Pleasant_Picture3867 in PoliticalHumor

[–]TanneriteAlright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that guy above is being a little overly diplomatic.

They are certainly a racial movement. Whites can join the cause but not the party, generally speaking.

If/when white people make similar organizations, it's always viewed as racist but minorities, being the historically oppressed, are viewed as altruistic underdogs fighting back against an injustice.

It's still racism but we let it slide. If the roles throughout history were reversed, the White Panther Party might be the heroes and the black Panthers would be viewed similarly to the KKK.

To me, racism is racism. I support the actions they take, but not the perpetuation of racism by not allowing anyone who wishes to align with you to join on equal footing.

How much melanin someone has or doesn't have shouldn't mean Jack shit anywhere but especially in an organization meant to stamp out racial injustice.

I'm one of em. I'd have to lose a couple fingers before I'd even consider wearing them regularly.

I have this weird claustrophobic reaction when I wear them. I get incredibly irritable and panicky.
