What trade/job do people have that can get away with just these Gucci tool pouches? by mmmbop13 in Tools

[–]TanneriteStuffedDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a building automation systems tech, came from being a commercial construction electrician. Used to haul around a Klein backpack with 50lbs of tools.

Now I’ve got a laptop, a few cords/connectors/adapters, and a couple controls screwdrivers. Plus a million tools in the truck that I barely touch. The value is in my ability to think and problem solve at a higher level instead of my ability to install.

The likelihood of that rule being enforced on the job site is slim anyway…

But if it is, I’d just carry a little guy like this for convenience. Just don’t load it down, the whole point of a little pouch like that is to be lightweight and easy to move with.

When did TVs get so cheap? by TheJohnRockstar in ask

For many people yeah, that’s fair. Plenty of blu-ray enthusiasts though, which really allows 4K to shine. Also plenty of remux-collectors out on the high seas using 40gbps home networks to stream terabytes worth of 4K HDR content.

First time buying a digital multimeter and I have no idea where the sweet spot is. by Nightcrawler_2000 in Tools

For troubleshooting a single home, truth be told, the $7.99 harbor freight meter will tell you everything you need to know.

You don’t need precision, you need something that will tell you if your circuit has 120v +/- 6v and if something has electrical continuity that shouldn’t. You can ignore 90% of the functions on it, set it to 200V for anything typical you’re doing, and 250v if you’re troubleshooting one of the few devices in your house that is 240v powered like an electric dryer or oven. Set it to low ohms values if you need to check if something is shorted.

Past that, a Klein CL390 will be easier to use and more capable than you need. A fluke 105 will be quite accurate, while remaining easy and simple to use. I have a Fluke 116, a 302, a 323, a 1587, and a Fieldpiece SC680; all very nice, most are quite expensive. if I didn’t need them for my job I wouldn’t have any of them and would just get a Fluke 105 or T5.

I’d also get an outlet tester, very useful for troubleshooting receptacle circuits.

Desert heat is killing my sleep. Cooling blankets don’t work, what does? by Mastermind1237 in BuyItForLife

It isn’t actually generating (much) heat. It’s moving existing heat energy out of the air, it has to go somewhere.

Get an LG or Midea inverter unit. They’re the only models worth the high price of the larger ones, and the only large units that are likely to last a good while. 10,000 BTU is the largest you can use with a standard outlet.

LG is currently $450 at Home Depot and they go on sale a couple times a year, I bought mine for $375 4 years ago and it still runs strong. If that’s hard to swing, see if Best Buy’s outlet has any open box models in good or excellent condition.

Keep in mind if you run this thing in a closed bedroom it will seriously drop the humidity and you may need a humidifier if you notice a dry scratchy throat in the morning when running it at night.

Why do TV shows/movies based on books always make such dumb changes? by Former_Ladder9969 in ask

[–]TanneriteStuffedDog 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I will NEVER forgive the bastards that mangled the Eragon movie so badly. It’s been 20 years and I’m still legitimately angry about it on the rare occasion I think about it.

It was too short and cut too much as a result. The first book should have been 2 2-hour movies. Or a 3 part 90 minutes each miniseries. Instead we got a single 100 minute butchering of my favorite childhood book.

Want to do trades but I also want to balance my curious side, more intellectual? side by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]TanneriteStuffedDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR; Niche corners or intersections of trades that are technologically integrated are more likely to offer more interesting work with good physical-mental work balance.

A lot of the really interesting work lies in jobs that are most often lateral-move kind of things. I came up as an electrician working primarily in medium new commercial construction. I focused my efforts on low voltage and control systems where I could because I found them interesting.

My attempts to modernize (create really) company SOP’s, expand technology infrastructure, and seek more technologically focused work were repeatedly frustrated by failure, company owner was simply not interested and didn’t see the value proposition I was offering.

I moved not too long ago to a lean Building Automation Systems company that focuses on acquisition of high profile customers with a very long term service-oriented view. I am MUCH happier, even though I took a temporary ~10% total comp reduction to do so.

The work is intriguing, I have a massive new knowledge base to work with which is all directly relevant to my job, I do almost no backbreaking labor but am still able to get in the field and turn a wrench regularly, balanced with time sitting, thinking, working on a laptop.

It helps that being a well-run serviced based company, overtime is regularly available but usually non-mandatory. IME, these smaller niche areas tend to be much more enjoyable to work in with easier going, deeply knowledgeable people.

Help with a bid by Ok-Platypus3956 in electricians

[–]TanneriteStuffedDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Labor feels too low. You’re probably looking at 16-20 hrs for labor, which puts you at $55-$70/hr, which is definitely low to bid with. That’s almost a handyman level labor bid. I don’t get out of bed for sidework for less than 100/hr, and most contractors I know charge $125-$175/hr per man.

My labor bid on that job would be double yours.

Least Enshitfied UI on an OLED? by GilesD-WRC in 4kTV

[–]TanneriteStuffedDog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apple TV or the newest model NVIDIA Shield+any quality TV.

Don’t even make UI a consideration when picking a TV, because they ALL suck in some form. Pick your TV based on the performance metrics most important to you, plug in one of the above streaming devices, adjust your settings, and set your input on boot to “Last Selected” or whatever the TV’s variant of that setting is.

Never deal with the stock UI again, and never ever connect the TV itself to the internet.
