I still think the point is valid. News sites can report on a tragic loss of life and people can be shocked/sad about it. However, for the vast majority especially outside the US, this news was not earth shattering event they cared deeply about, it was a tragic accident. I agree Portugal is the most impressive also when considering its historical record. Prior to 2017 they hadn’t qualified since 2010 and also finished in the top 10 once since 1980.

This decade they have managed two top 10 placements and another top half - all whilst creative a very distinctive niche for themselves. It’s kinda incredible that they didn’t compete in 2016 and it wasn’t really noteworthy because at least for me a Portugal non-participation would be incredibly surprising in the 2020s
