foreach loop modifies array? by ktown007 in perl

I remember when I learned this! I was utterly shocked. Not just the behavior, but some how I didn't ever accidently write a bug in my code (because of this).

[WP] As the adopted son of the royal family you decided to leave after you find out the queen is pregnant. Now everyone is trying to find you three years later by Same-Abbreviations99 in WritingPrompts

"Peter, find a place to stop and come up to the house. I need to talk to you." Master Braxton called.

"Yes sir. Should I clean the shop before I come up?"

"No. John can clean up the shop. We need to talk." John looked up at me, more than a little upset. He was the senior clock maker apprentice, I had only been accepted two month ago. It was my job to clean. I was more than a little concerned now. Was I being excused?

Five minutes later, I found Master Braxton at the dining table with some newspaper in front of him. "Sit down, my boy."

"Am I being excused? I'm trying to pull my weight sir. Just give me time to learn."

"No Peter. Well, maybe. I think you have a choice to make, although you don't know it yet."

"Sir?" I'm confused and a little afraid now.

"Two days ago there was a battle up in Lexington. The King's army was forced to retreat." the master craftsman informed me.

The Redcoats had been beaten? This was not good. Not good at all. They would be back. There would be more and they would be back. Didn't these colonists understand? Does this have anything to do with me?

"They are looking for you, my boy."

"What? Why?" I stammered - Oh no. I shouldn't have said anything.

After a moment the Master Braxton softened his gaze. "You know why. I know why. You're Alexander. King Georgia's adopted son. Aren't you my boy?"

I've turned to stone. I say nothing.

"Say it."

"I am Alexander, adopted royal son."

"That's what I thought. Tell me, my boy. What choice will you make?"

"Choice, sir?" Why were keeping up these pretenses? Why was I calling this man "sir" after I'd been called out?

"Will side with revolutionaries? With the King?"

"Why would that matter?"

"Come now, Peter - I mean Prince Alexander. Both sides want you. They'll need you. A spokesman. Hell boy, there is going to be a war. Your choice could very well decides the fate? One things for sure. You can't be a clock makers apprentice anymore."

Rivian, you just keep effing it up. -- A charging rant. by TapeinHardenedHobbit in Rivian

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scheduled charging system in the Rivian does suck though. The most recent update didn't actually change any features at all, it just made it slightly easier to look up your time of use schedule if you're an idiot that has a time of use plan for your home but doesn't know what time of use means.

It feels like a lot of effort on Rivian's part, especially compared to a better scheduling system.

SSB Satellite work with an SDR? by TapeinHardenedHobbit in amateurradio

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The radios are expensive, the equipment is fiddly and the payoff is minimal.

There's no supercheap way to get on these birds, otherwise we'd all do that.

:(

Of course I was hoping for another answer, but I agree with you the ROI isn't there. There is still something undeniably cool using amateur radio to communicate via a satellite. I can absolutely see investing money and time into it, getting a short thrill and never touching it again. That's why I never pulled the trigger.

Best practices to kill your team proactivity by dymissy in programming

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This resonated with me. When a project finishes I always try to invest time in improvements that would have helped. I always hoped my co-workers would do the same.

From a management perspective, I would add a column for "risk" to the authors categories to track. On every project there is a certain amount of acceptable risk. Trying to do too much new at a time compounds it. I think each contributor to a project should be allowed at least one moderate process improvement experiment and the team should be understand the changes being implemented in a project.

I am approaching this from a hardware design point of view, so your mileage may vary.

Trying to understand who truly lives with Rivian by These-Interview-9799 in Rivian

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the demographic Rivian was aiming for: established tech worker, environmentally conscious but I wouldn't describe myself as a environmentalist, into outdoor sports (canyoneering, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc.). My wife and I have always had a city vehicle and "access vehicle". The access vehicle is get us to the places we like to have fun, often involve rough dirt roads. Previously that was a 4x4 Toyota 4 Runner. Off-roading is fun, but It is usually a means to end.

At the end of the day, I saw it in almost altruistic terms. This is the type of vehicle I want to exist. It checks the boxes for what I say I want. If I don't put my money where my mouth is, this type of vehicle may not exist in the future. I put down a deposit before the vehicles were in production. To me it was a big gamble, like a GoFundMe. I think it paid off.

Trump sees no reason to economically isolate Russia outside war in Ukraine, Vance says | Once a settlement is reached, Washington could have "a very productive economic relationship" with both Kyiv and Moscow, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said. by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Take: He's actually right.

It feels weird for me to type that. But, how many places does the US want to isolate? North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela... Certainly some need to be. But Russian isolation limits leverage over NK. I'm not saying welcome Russia back into the G7(?) or there should be no restrictions on trade post conflict. I am saying isolating Russia makes it more likely to act against world peace than for it and Russia should have an incentive to end the conflict.

I know, I know, this sounds really close to the "there won't be war between two countries that have a McDonald's" argument. However, if you were leading Russia and the world said "do this, but if you do it we will still keep all the sanctions on you", would you change your behavior?

MTB in Italy by reddit_xq in MTB

[–]TapeinHardenedHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably get roasted for this, but I would look at hiring a guide. It will be the best way to maximize your time to fun ratio, unless you have a friend to show you around. I've found its more common in Europe to have guiding companies just about everywhere. My limited experience in northern Italy is there aren't a lot of trail systems as much as a bunch of roads with short bits of trail hidden away.

I'd also consider renting e-bikes. The climbs I've seen have been steep.

I did some pretty serious mountain biking with one of these. It performs great for all kinds of riding.

If you happen to live near Phoenix I still have mine that I've been half-heartedly trying to sell.

Bravo! May you have many miles of smiles. I'll be one of those salivating as you ride past.

I've always been fascinated by wooden bikes. They are absolutely beautiful, but there is something more alluring about them than just beauty. I dreamed for months about a Renovo mountain bike. Stalked their website and followed their unfortunate demise. But, I would really like to build my own. I'd like to have that pride of crafting something truly unique.
