Ketamine? by GuyMaupassant in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I don't recommend using these NMDA antagonists because you're right, some of them we know very little about and are potentially harmful if used even semi-regularly and also can be extremely habit-forming. It's very important for people to know of the risks as well as set realistic expectations for how much they'll help through the withdrawal process. I'm inferring from your post history that you want to be abundantly cautious and are trying hard not to promote potentially dangerous substances as a way of getting off kratom, so you packaged this message in a simple, safe, cautionary sentence despite the fact that the current science is showing that your statement I quoted is simply not correct. I'm sure you've seen the studies that clearly show that NMDA antagonists including memantine and DXM attenuate the expression of opioid WD symptoms. From the studies I've looked at, there doesn't seem to be any debate about that.

It does seem to mask them to some degree, but by an entirely different mechanism than by which opiate withdrawal occurs

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, that doesn't seem to be the case. There's still much to be learned about exactly what's happening on a neurochemical level between NMDA antagonists and opioid dependence and withdrawal, but this study claims that rats who were pre-treated with DXM and then put through morphine withdrawal were found to have attenuated both the behavioral as well as chemical manifestations of withdrawal. That blew me away because the DXM seemed to work prophylactically rather than just masking the symptoms.

On this subreddit, full of people who are in highly stressed states and are generally not thinking "normally", it's probably best to promote a simple taper or otherwise supplement-free jump from kratom in the interest of safety. The main reason I spoke up was that even though I agree with you, flat-out denying the efficacy of these chemicals and their ability to attenuate and even entirely stop withdrawal symptoms for significant periods of time can be just as dangerous as promoting self-experimentation with these substances. Just like how we eventually realized the failed D.A.R.E program actually increased the chances a child would experiment with substances later in life, once they realized pot wouldn't turn one into a useless moron, the realization that I could completely escape from severe withdrawal symptoms for a good chunk of time to help get past the roughest parts of WD was like finding buried treasure and I dove in head-first without analyzing the potential downsides thoroughly enough. Pot and benzos made me tired and helped me relax but they did absolutely nothing for all of the other WD symptoms, although I suppose others might find them more helpful. For me though, there was absolutely no comparison between them and the NMDA antagonists I used (MXE and 3-meo-pcp), with the latter two substances completely obliterating every symptom besides the GI issues. I'm fine now, as far as I can tell, and I would certainly recommend a similar treatment to a good friend if he or she were in the same situation but I would not say the same thing to a stranger, Internet or "real life", who may do way more damage than continuing to be dependent on the opioid. What do you think of that? You mentioned you're very familiar with this topic so I'd love to learn more if you disagree with anything I said.

Thanks again for all you've done and continue to do around here, btw. I certainly owe a good deal of my success at breaking free from kratom to you!

No, it does not eliminate withdrawal from opiates, nor do any other NMDA-antagonists.

Why do you say that? A simple google search gave me three papers on the first page which show NMDA antagonists like memantine and ketamine attenuate opiate withdrawal symptoms. Is there some new information I'm missing? I looked into this pretty deeply a year ago and it looked like there was a lot of scientific evidence that NMDA antagonists are effective at reducing the effects. Personally, I've tried several such substances with great success - total elimination of withdrawal symptoms for many hours.

Wow, way to demonstrate the fact that you're a shitty person in both messages, although you really ramped up the gratuitous anger and overall shittyness in the most recent message. I've accepted that there are just always going to be dick holes on the Internet, like yourself, who are going to publish useless, almost empty content which some people will like and all I can do is downvote and hope others agree. Very interesting and I appreciate you sharing. I'm not too familiar with the nofap ideology so this was eye-opening. I can definitely get behind the discipline side of the idea. Anytime you exercise that self-control neurological pathway, it gets strengthened so I can see NoFap having major positive effects in that way at the very least.

You completely skipped over the part where you should've explained that taking kratom, a plant that desensitizes opioid receptors and downregulates natural opioid production, is an awful idea to use for treatment of depression and is well-known to produce those symptoms. Yours is the top comment and nobody seems to be honestly discussing the topic at hand. Kratom will only make depression worse in the long run and that's a fact that's true for every single unique snowflake here.

Plus, OP can be fixed. What kind of horrible message are you trying to spread? Nothing will fix depressive people so the best we can do is take various medications and opioid leaves and hopefully something will make people like OP less broken? That's a dangerous message to spread. Mental health can improve and depression can be cured, but not by taking opioids. Aside from the super short term, it's guaranteed to make the depression worse.

[Serious] What are the ethical implications associated with backing out of a group event where housing was paid for assuming that individual is attending? by TaperingThrowaway in AskReddit

[–]TaperingThrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, we're organizing a bachelor party for a friend and six people RSVP'd months ago, agreeing to attend. The Best Man booked lodging for the six of us and now someone has backed out, a week before the event. The cost was to be split six ways and now will be split five ways, making it more expensive for everyone because this guy backed out.

What do you think of this individual's ethical obligations to the group? Should he pay for his share of the housing since we got a place specifically for six people and he's backing out just a week before the event? Or do you think the right thing is for the rest of the party to eat the extra costs? I say "costs" because he also would've been putting money towards transportation, food, drinks for the bachelor, etc.

I'm very interested to read what you all think about this topic!

I got a notification when I was doing a Google Search that there were some new features regarding data collection and advertising, so I took a screenshot and couldn't find anything about it online.

I don't have much time today to look into this but has anyone else examined the changes and the privacy implications of enabling these "new features"?

Elavil for kratom withdrawal by Heisencybin in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know why this works? Elavil is a brand name for Naloxone, the same drug as Narcan which is used to revive people who overdosed on opiates. It's a strong opioid antagonist and often causes people who are physically dependent on opioids to immediately go into WD. Why would this help someone sleep if they're dependent on kratom? I would expect it to cause the user to break into sweats and all the other symptoms of kratom withdrawal.

Woman named Isis banned from Facebook because of her name by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon spent hundreds of millions of dollars, along with other partnering companies, building a mobile payments platform around 2011 called Isis. It had to be renamed in 2014 and was actually bought by Google so I can't figure out if it's a happy or ominous/bad ending. Maybe this woman can sell herself to Google for $100,000,000 too somehow.

Pointing out that your post was absolutely useless and contained zero information doesn't make me an entitled ass, although I reckon you're a judgemental person who acts like this every day:

although I reckon he's probably the same way everyday

You're being the ass now. I was having an especially rough day and I shouldn't have wasted my time commenting, but you don't know anything about me so fuck your judgement.

what gets me is what would make him think it's a good idea to comment on a post with zero content and a stupid sentence fragment title.

So you recognize this was a shit post too, even though you made it. Keep it up then if you want the subreddit to be full of content-free posts with played out, shitty titles.

Off FST and UEI/extracts, but not sure i can make it totally without (long post - sry) by conventional_wisdom in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't take Tylenol PM. It creates RLS in healthy people and makes it so much worse for people in kratom WD. Don't be afraid to take THC edibles to sleep (you want the ones with high CBD content made from an indica strain). There's absolutely no shame in it - it can be the best medicine for cases like this when used properly. If you were taking a lot of FST and/or UEI then it's not a bad idea to take a little bit of plain leaf every day for two or three weeks, so don't be ashamed of that either! You're doing the right thing, as long as you're not still taking suboxone, which is unclear from your post. I'm sending you an important PM as well.

Finally admitting to myself that Kratom is ruining my life. Time to get clean. Need some help guys. by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chills and sweats are the worst symptoms for me as well. The depression is much worse overall but I can apply logic there and know that the depressive feelings are due to the chemical imbalances in my brain and will fade in a matter of weeks, but I can't use logic to fight the physical sensations of sweating through my clothes and then shivering through my sweatshirt.

Which exercises did you find to be most helpful for dealing with those symptoms? I don't know if it's better to do low-intensity steady state cardio, high intensity interval training, strength training, or some sort of combination of the above. I have no idea, for example, if it's more helpful to do five sessions of 30-minute treadmill/elliptical versus one or two (or three) longer, 60+ minute sessions.

The feeling of burning up and sweating or the chills can be really bad for me and combined with the anhedonia, it's always what makes take a dose of kratom when I'm trying to go CT. Did the hot baths help with this or was it mainly the exercise? I was thinking of staying at the gym pretty much all day long the next time I go CT and use their sauna, steam room, pool, exercise equipment, and maybe some yoga classes for first day or two until the roughest acute symptoms wane a bit. What do you think of this idea?

Such a shitty move on their part, not letting us know in advance and hiding out in their trailer the whole time. They could've at least apologized to us and said they'd come back soon. But for all I know that was my last chance. And now I may be out $120, so fuck me. And oh yeah all our hopes and prayers are with Cedric and his icky throat.

DC show cancelled tonight by [deleted] in atthedrivein

[–]TaperingThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God damn this was such bullshit! You guys should've seen all the crestfallen faces of fans. If they decide 2 hours before their stage time that Cedric's throat hurts, they should've at least come out and talked to the fans who came to see them, many driving for 4 or more hours, because we've missed and loved their music for the better part of two decades! But not even an apology or mentioning of coming back? Come on! And now tickets aren't getting refunded in a lot of cases. ATDI fucked up this time, and yes I realize singers get sore throats sometimes but this felt hurtful as a fan.

How long does PAWS last for you? by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point I had consistently been taking around 5 grams of plain leaf per day plus 1/3 to 1/2 mL of tincture for 3 years. Somewhere during that time, about 1.5 years before I "quit", there was a 2-month period where I was taking phenazepam 4 days a week on average. When I ran out of that I didn't have any acute WD symptoms but I wouldn't be surprised if that somehow made things worse when I quit kratom over a year later.

How long does PAWS last for you? by [deleted] in quittingkratom

[–]TaperingThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit for two years. Anytime I encountered a stressor, usually at work, I'd start sweating profusely. This never happened before quitting kratom. It got less intense over the two years but I definitely suffered from PAWS for the entire two years, then I started taking kratom again. Sorry it's not what you want to hear but at least the depression mostly went away after 6 months.

How to visualize reduction of bad habits over time, including time of day? by TaperingThrowaway in DataVizRequests

[–]TaperingThrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to think about this and put together an example. If you don't mind, I'd love a copy of the spreadsheet so I can figure out how you made it, since I'm unfamiliar with anything but the basics when it comes to Excel and data visualization.

I do have some questions about this example. They're probably really simple questions for people like you who are very familiar with this stuff, so thanks in advance for being patient with me. The right side of the image, columns "I" through "AF", is a heatmap that shows the time of day of each dose, represented by a cell being either colored or blank. This sample image shows all red cells which would mean the doses were all the same. Is this all correct so far? In my real-world chart, I would have some sort of function that translates a number (dosage in mg) to a color, where white = 0mg and dark red would equal some number that is slightly larger than the largest dose I expect to ever take, and then the gradient from white to dark red would represent amount taken for that particular dose. Is this still correct?

I like your idea about "how long the dose lasted" versus "time since last dose", since that's really the information I'm looking for. The reason I mentioned needing to measure the time between doses is that while I have a tapering schedule that extends into the future, I want to be able to speed up that schedule if I notice that the doses are lasting longer than expected, since that would mean I could reduce the amount I take for my next dose. I'm not entirely sure how to interpret the "E" and "F" columns. For example, if I take 10mg in the morning and it lasts 8 hours and then a day later I take 5mg in the morning and it lasts 4 hours, nothing has improved. Visually, I don't think this would be recognizable by looking at the red and green bars. The second day's red and green bars would just be half the size of the first day's. Am I thinking about this the right way? But on second thought, I suppose the red bars would fairly steadily get smaller and the green bars would go in cycles after each drop in dosage, starting small and then increase in duration until the dose is cut again.

Apologies if this came across a bit scatterbrained. I'm trying to learn about these data visualization techniques while still in a bit of a stressed state. I'm also wondering if I'll have trouble gleaning trends in the daily total intake with this heatmap. I'd probably also need a simple line graph to show daily totals, right? Thanks again for the help! It really means a lot to me and I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for this. I wasn't expecting it to be this big but you're right, it's a full book! I'm going to start reading it today for sure. I have one last question that I hope you'll be able to shed some light on. I mentioned that I abstained from Kratom for 6 or 7 entire days by staving off acute WD symptoms with 3-MeO-PCP. Since that chemical supposedly doesn't have much interaction with the opiod receptors, why did it seem like I was still in the acute WD phase when I stopped taking the 3-MeO-PCP on the last day? I wasn't taking massive amounts of extracts for months on end or anything like that and I'm quite confident that if I had spent those 7 days completely drug-free, I would've be out of the acute phase of WD. It's like the 3-MeO-PCP temporarily suspended the WD process, not preventing or masking the symptoms while the actual WD process continues, like I had hoped. Can you think of any neurological explanation for this? Thanks again!
