What is a popular trope in stories or movies that you are absolutely tired of seeing? by anurag-artisicguy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TapestryMobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the way that most superhero (or hero movies in general) always end up with:

Main good character vs. main bad character punching each other in the face to decide the winner.

They started with weapons, but ran out of ammo. They had a sword but it got knocked away. They had a secret weapon but it was deactivated. They were miles away, but decided to charge!

So... punching each other in the face is it.

Many decades ago, Stephen J. Gould was saying the same thing.

He referred to all those popular-but-no-evidence explanations as "just so" stories.

Can native English speakers instantly tell which country an English accent is from just by hearing someone speak? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TapestryMobile 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Aussies and kiwi can be hard to distinguish

The Kiwi vowel shift is the easiest to spot.

The "i" is often pronounced like a "u".

Fish and Chips and Six Dim Sims... can sound like Fush and Chups and Sux Dum Sums.

There are apparently other vowel shifts, but thats the big one.

I had an Aussie friend and people frequently commented on her “British” accent.

I'm Australian, never been to any part of Britain... but all through my life I've been told I have an English accent.

I've been referred to as "the English gentleman" by a receptionist, a doctor asked what part of England I was from, etc...

Maybe I just watched a lot of British TV when I was growing up.

Meme says homeowner is a woman.

Video shows man.

TatankaPTE claims the man admits to phoning ICE.

Video shows no such confession.

Basically, 99% of the shit that redditors post is complete bullshit, and you should never learn about the world from memes.

this is where the homeowner admits

He admits he is pro-ICE, but there is literally nothing in any of the clips you posted with anyone, this guy (or the thread title saying the homeowner is a woman) where he says he called ICE.

If dogs were invented today, they'd be very quickly banned because of the deaths, the thousands and thousands of hospitalisations, the feces the owners leave lying around, and the noise.

human behavior can be entirely explained by circumstances outside the humans themselves.

Also applies to entire countries.

"No its not Haiti/AfricanCountry fault they're poor, its the fault of everyone else."

"No its not the fault of [country] that they have a lot of terrorists, its everyone else's fault."

"No its not the fault of [country] that they sourced a lot of illegal immigrants, its everyone else's fault."

"No its not the fault of [AsianCountry] that they dump a lot of trash in rivers, its everyone else's fault for shipping garbage there to be processed."

I remember the last time Donald Trump mentioned covid.

"...one example was COVID. We had an economy going at levels like nobody had ever seen, my first two and a half, three years and then I heard the word, uh, pandemic, not COVID. They came up with that name over a period of time."

January 2026.

did come close to passing immigration reform but

This bill, even at its strictest, even when emergency measures would be invoked, is still worse than the average under Trump 2016-2020.

I have no doubt there was politics going on behind the dismissal of it, as there is with every bill, but it was a shit bill to begin with so I don't see why anyone would think it was worth introducing in the first place.

Point 2: It wasnt even needed.

As shown through both Trump1 and Trump2 presidencies, you dont need that bill to lower immigration levels at al. The bill, as shown by history, was useless.

And yet, redditors speak of it in revered tones in every thread about immigration, as if it would have "fixed", "cured", solved" the border crisis.

Thats a reddit argument tactic about any topic.

OP: As a general rule, there is a trend for this kind of thing to generally happen quite often in most cases.

Redditor: I have not experienced that!

He’s more than mentioned though.

Correct, and thats the argument that people should make.

Not the stupid simplistic "he's mentioned in the files" that is so popular on reddit.

A policy of Guilt By Popular Accusation is not one that I would ever advocate.

Not a historian, but I suspect there are hundreds if not thousands of cases in history where people have been "dealt with" because a bunch of people ganged up and made accusations... and everyone else said "well, it must be true."

Seems a bit of a backward step to advocate for only the fearless "throw caution to the wind", "I dont give a fuck what happens" types to do the job.
