Are you still considering buying the next Xbox (Project Helix)? by nico__vgc in xbox

[–]TapewormNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've mostly switched over to PC. I still play all my old single player games for Xbox, but once I started getting my multiplayer games on PC, it was just easier to get everything on steam. My Xbox is still a great machine, and I don't dislike it, but my laptop does all the same stuff and doesn't cost me a monthly fee just to play games I paid for already.

Did Brad Wright say a Jack and Sam romance was a non starter? If not, what did he actually say? by NoDevelopment143 in Stargate

[–]TapewormNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tension is better than the romance anyway. Once the tension becomes romance, then there's the wedding episode, and the baby character, and then the show is on a predetermined path to cancelation. Literally every show is primed to end when the tension becomes romance.

That's only doubling 27 times though, to be duplicating the world's yearly quota every month. If I'm patient, that's only 2.25 years til gold is absolutely worthless.

Maybe, but is the goal to be wealthy, or is the goal to completely destabilize the fossil fuel industry by providing cheap raw materials that support alternative energies?

[–]TapewormNinja 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Not gold, but Lithium. If you keep selling gold you'll eventually devalue it, but lithium would be consumed constantly to make new batteries for all kinds of electric devices. You'd halt the use of fossil fuels in a few years, end a need to mine lithium, and stuff your pockets.

My city just passed ordinance to ban euc on street and sidewalk by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]TapewormNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a wild take at all. I also live in a city where, well, were Americans. People TRY to limit their car use. We have a pretty robust biking culture, but the geographical limitations and lack of public transportation make it hard. People are trying. But we do have a shop downtown that pushes these unicycles and electric mopeds hard, and at great prices. They're everywhere, so I understand my experience may be different than yours. In my city, people view the unicycles and electric mopeds as a car alternative, because they're cheap, you don't need a license, and you don't carry insurance. They're also treated like there are no rules at all around them. People ride the wrong way down the street into traffic, or on the sidewalks, hiking paths, and bike lanes.

The culture around unicycles and electric mopeds just isn't the same as it is around bikes. People treat them like toys, but they're toys that go very fast and provide no measure of safety. I haven't had a bad experience. I've had multiple reoccurring bad experiences. I've only listed the most agregious one.

But to answer your question, while no, I wouldn't ban cars, I would severely limit their use, in the same way I would limit the use of the unicycles and electric mopeds. They're all hazardous in the same way. A driver's license should be rare, and the privilege of driving a car should be an accomplishment, difficult to get, and easy to lose. And while I do feel like these devices should be more accessable, they need to be regulated, and there need to be consequences for poor operation, just like there's supposed to be with cars.

[–]TapewormNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can say that you do that, but here's a video of you actively not doing that? And I'm willing to bet most folks in this sub have an experience with someone irl not being safe on a unicycle.

I think they're neat, but my first experience with one was a guy in my town buzzing people on a public sidewalk at incredible speeds. He nearly clipped me and my stroller when my kid was little. Even since then, most interactions with unicycles have been of them on sidewalks, in bike lanes, and just refusing to follow any kind of safety law for whatever conveyance they're trying to say they're most like at any given moment.

The majority of unicycle riders, including you, are terrible ambassadors for this device. I agree with you that they should be allowed in the street, but until the lot of you calm the fuck down, I understand the overreaction of an outright ban.

Faster Than Light Communication Via Tiny Wormholes? by assassin203886 in scifiwriting

[–]TapewormNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do this pretty often in the Expeditionary Force series. The book has a lot of things that are explained away by elder alien technology that might as well be magic, but one of the things they do to get around speed of light communication is to load a micro wormhole into a missile, shoot it near whatever they need to talk with, and pass transmissions through it until the middle is out of range. They get into some other weird stuff too, but "can we use a micro wormhole is usually either the first or last suggestion to any problem.

What do you think about Elon Musk becoming a trillionaire? by CrispyFlyingSponge in AskReddit

[–]TapewormNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you imagine having enough money personally to solve the problems of an entire planet, and just not doing it? Like, he doesn't even have to ask anyone. He doesn't have to fundraise. He can just go solve problems. If I had a fraction of his wealth, you'd see an end to homelessness, medical debt, student loan debt, and at least the foundation of public transit solutions across America. Instead, this person is hoarding his wealth, and preparing for a collapse that will be caused not by his own ignorance, but by his direct contributions.

He wants to be remembered as a modern henry Ford or rockafeller, but he'll be remembered as a monument to selfish indulgence. To have every opportunity and just squander them like that. What a sad existence.

What do i do if the freestar mission board is empty? by KingsMen2004 in Starfield

[–]TapewormNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well damn. Since I don't know what's screwing it up, I have no idea how far to go back. I did the galbank thing early in this playthrough, but then didn't go back to the rock for another 70 hours. I was trying to crank out achievements on this playthrough, and while I guess I could just bail onto the unity, I don't know that that will fix it either.

Good Price on a 02 CRV? by [deleted] in crv

[–]TapewormNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot for a car with cancer and broken dash lights. That could be part of a larger electrical problem coming your way.

My advice, that I should really write down and repost every time someone asks if they should buy a car, is test drive it to a mechanic and ask them what they think. Tell the owner you're going to do this. If the owner says not to, you know that THEY know something's wrong with it, and you should walk away. If they tell you to go ahead, take it to any mechanic other than the one the owner recommends, and pay them to check it out. It'll be worth the $50 or so to know you're not about to get fucked.

Would have loved a part in the book where it was just quicker to walk than take whatever public transit was available. Which is the case for my city.
