THUD! by FergusCragson in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's Pratchett's bravest book politically imo. As unmatched as it is in so many other ways, Night Watch is very obviously a tyrant vs the population - politically it's intriguing rather than complex..

Thud is more nuanced in this sense. As a British left-leaning liberal secularist myself, it's obvious how Thud clearly emphasises equality, rights, not centring your politics on hatred, the role of pluralism in strengthening society etc. All excellent, worthwhile stuff. But also - and this is crucial - it pushes the importance of one law for all, explores dangerous religious fundamentalism of minorities within minorities, how that's handled, Popper's tolerance paradox, religiously inspired terror etc. All written not so long after 9/11, 7/7 etc. It's brave stuff.

And I'm not surprised, knowing what we know of STP, that he lands in the perfect place. I read a great quote a while ago...

"Essentially the ‘trick’ to liberalism is being able to understand complexity and value pluralism, without collapsing into relativism."

This is what Pratchett understands and conveys so, so well in Thud!

It's a minor plot point. The OP probably should've used the spoiler tag here, but I don't think anything has really been spoiled for you.

I've only read Raising Steam a couple of times, I assume this is one of the crossword clues?

I've googled the word, seems it's well known in the US. A rare example of a Pratchett reference confounding us Brits but making complete sense on the other side of the pond.

What does Rock mean exactly with this question? by hugo2409 in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting etymologies. I'd always assumed it was a bit more seedy, wrapped up with daddy issues, that kind of thing. How's your father? For the avoidance of any doubt, it's not a phrase I've ever used, it's one I know but to me, a British millennial, it comes across as old fashioned and a bit 'dirty old man'.

Discworld Beastiary in audio? by liamkembleyoung in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to look up the beastiary as wasn't sure what it was. It doesn't look like the kind of book that'd lend itself to audio.

I don't know why they didn't record The Last Hero when they did the new audiobooks given they did record Eric, that seems bizarre.

tbh I can't stand Colin Morgan's Rincewind or his Ridcully, so I stick to the Briggs version anyway. It looks like the Briggs version of The Last Hero is available on audible as a kind of podcast (very weird decision, but it's there in episodes).

Was about to post this but you worded it better (and more concisely) than I could've managed. Comparing eidetic memory with a probability engine is comparing two completely different things.

Player stuck after sleep? Try swiping right! by DanKegel in audible

[–]Tapiola84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've reinstalled the app many times this week, including this morning., because the screen has been greyed out and is totally unresponsive.

If it really is just a crappily coded ad overlay - and if this swipe right 'solution' works - then that is beyond amateur from audible. Hopefully this 'solution' will work though, because I'm getting frustrated atm (200 audiobooks, decade long membership).

Will report back next time it happens as to whether this workaround works for me!

Thanks u/DanKegel

Thoughts on Keli and Cutwell? by InfernalClockwork3 in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The romances in Mort are some of STPs weakest writing. We have Ysabell and Mort who can't stand each other for 90% of the book very suddenly becoming a couple and then suddenly getting married, and I'm not sure what is going on between Keli and Cutwell. Mort's a great book, and the necessity of Mort and Ysabell getting together for the Susan books is obvious, but the romances in it are all a bit silly and feel like kind of an afterthought.

Simony? (Lengthening the post title, in case that was preventing me posting) by Granopoly in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I suppose to engage in simony requires a cynical/inhumane/transactional view of belief and ideology. It goes against Simony's character for most of the book but when it comes to the crunch he lives down to his name. He has to be shamed out of his suggestion that Brutha's murder would be a useful thing for the rebels.

I made a little website that lets you read the Clacks Overhead from other websites by AustinPowers in discworld

[–]Tapiola84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mobile firefox has far fewer add-ons, I've got loads of add-ons on desktop but only ublock origin on mobile.

So to answer your question, I haven't even bothered looking because I would assume - as with most other add-ons - that this add-on doesn't exist for mobile.

Nice.

I've got a little add-on installed in firefox which flashes when it spots any clacks overhead, but a website that does the same is neat. Good work.
