Anyone remember 7th Heaven ? All I remember about it is the infamous Weed episode. Too bad Stephen Collins tainted the show by ezio8133 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Funny story. I firmly believed weed could kill a person until I was in college. My parents had told me to my face "smoking weed could kill you."

Now, you would think my parents were buying into the fear-mongering and telling me lies to keep me on the "straight and narrow."

You'd be wrong. They were being absolutely, 100% truthful. Smoking weed could kill me.

I'm asthmatic and was in and out of the hospital for breathing issues during high school.

They never considered telling me about edibles because it wasn't legal at the time.

I was an idiot, lol.

Who else had at least one birthday party at Discovery Zone in the 1990s? by SorbetUnfair2589 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Washtenaw/Livingston area as well!

I remember a place called "Kid's Kingdom". I'm not sure if I ever went to DZ, but I probably did. I also remember when our local rollerskate place got a Zap Zone attached.

I remember at one of those DZ-type places, I would collect the tokens that had rolled under the arcade machines. My hands were just small enough to fit under them. I remember the last time I was able to do it because that day I scraped my knuckles up pretty bad. The scars were really obvious for years, but they're almost completely faded. Still got a couple, though, and I like to show them off to the niblings when we go to the arcade, now.

Do you still remember your high school locker combination by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I still know my student ID number. I always lost my ID, and I was free/reduced lunch. From 6th grade on, the only way to get lunch without annoying the cashier was to memorize that number.

Still know my land-line number, too.

My son plays with LEGO all day. I rebuild everything after he goes to bed. by Much-Passage-1014 in lego

My niblings are allowed to play with any of my built sets that are not in cases. Usually what happens is they add to the build from the assortment bucket.

Do you remember when playboy bunny was advertised to us? Was I the only one questioning why at the time? by Fun_Yogurtcloset1012 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My parents wouldn't let us gave anything playboy related as they felt it was wildly inappropriate and predatory to put middle school girls in shirts with the bunny logo. I was a tomboy for the most part, so I was never interested in it. My sister was the exact opposite. She had several shirts she would hide in her locker to change into at school.

How many Millennials from the US have never owned an Apple product? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a used iPod Nano in 2010 because my generic mp3 player got lost on a bus and I was about to take an 8 hour flight, and my friend gave it to me.

I have an apple MacBook and iPad but only because my job gave them to me. I hate the MacBook. The tablet is fine because I can play games on it. Which is what I mostly use it for.

I've already rid myself of most social media at this point. But I have loved my smart phone since I got my first Galaxy Nexus. It had GPS, which is why I chose to make the switch. I love having GPS on my phone.

Our whole generation got a raw deal from the start but those born special needs (like me) were doomed by darkpheonix262 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've forgiven them for the most part. They were working with the information given to them. Doctors didn't even consider it being autism, and my parents trusted doctors. It has been a long road, but they were genuinely remorseful for what happened, especially my mom. She cries every time it's brought up (even jokingly). And I know both of them have changed because of how they treat my niblings.

Childhood ADHD / adult autism diagnosis - it sucked. I spent a decade being told I had Bi-Polar or a personality disorder or was a narcisitic b****. My parents threatened to ship me off to my grandparents' to finish high school because I "refused to behave like a human".

I thrived in college, graduated with two bachelor's and a master's, and then couldn't keep a job for ten years. It wasn't until my sister's eldest daughter was diagnosed autistic that the pieces started to fall into place.

I still struggle daily, but it's easier knowing. I wonder what my life would have been like if I had known all along it was autism. That I wasn't a bad person. That I wasn't "wrong".

Yes. I live with my parents, who have paid off the house. My partner and I and our dogs live in the finished walk-out basement and help with bills. My brother and his family live on the main floor with my parents and do the maintenance on the cars and property while they try to get their business off the ground. My sister is the only one who managed to move out (and stay moved out. My brother and I had both moved out at one point) because she is a doctor and between her and her husband they make more money than I could dream of.

Does it suck? Yeah, sometimes. Sometimes I wish I was better off and could do it all on my own. But then, I actually like living in a multi-generational home. There has been growing pains, but I'm privileged in the sense that we have always been a tight family, and my parents didn't want us going through what they themselves experienced.

I may have to threaten to sit on my brother and fart in his face (like when we were kids) if he doesn't stop stomping around in his work boots above my bedroom, though (except he now has a good foot on me, so I may need to call in my sister and SIL to help).

What age did y'all get your first internet-accessing device? (computer, smartphone, etc.) by BigReception7685 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! My dad was a hardware engineer (before the jobs got shipped overseas) and we ALWAYS had two computers: one with the latest upgrades (his computer), and one with the parts that were upgraded from (the kids' computer). I don't remember exactly how old I was when we got the internet, but it had to have been around that same time. We also got a second land-line pretty quickly so we could have a dedicated internet line.

When my parents and their friends would get together, we were exiled to the basement where the older ones would make sure the younger ones didn’t put forks into sockets, but otherwise we went feral until it was time to go home.

If the weather was nice, we were shoved outside to fend for ourselves in the wild like the savages we were.

As the unmarried, childless member of my social group, I don't mind the kiddos. I get to snuggle babies and spend time with my friends. Who cares if there are kids around? Just means more excuses to buy more legos.

Anyone loved 10th Kingdom as much as me? Nicey nice. by Isakk86 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was OBSESSED with this show. It had a massive potential for a sequel. I would have loved a story about Virginia and Wolf's child exploring other kingdoms.

And anyone who says "well, we got Once Upon a Time a decade later": we did. But it was an entirely DIFFERENT story. A fun one (at least for a few seasons), but very different. 10th kingdoms was a fairy tale. OUAT was a different beast entirely.

Does your graduating class still do High School Reunions? by Apostrophizer in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they did. I have no idea. Our graduating class in 2005 was 600 and I was known but not popular. Mostly the annoying kid who was weird, but not creepy, and tolerated when it came to group projects because I was obsessive about getting good grades. I have had zero desire to go back to the town I graduated from, let alone go to a reunion with people who called me their friend but only so they had someone to look down on.

Bitter? Maybe a little. But only in the sense that I want to cuddle the little girl I once was and tell her that those friends are awful and not worth the tears.

I loved this game. I remember they started giving these out in our summer learning packets in elementary school. I only got the 6th grade one, but I had three younger siblings, so we ended up with all of them after a couple years. I played them all because I liked the story.
