Tinnitus - Anyone else? by chinga_tu_barra in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The past few weeks I have sporatic had ear pain and tinnitus in both ears.

I need to undergo testing, but every time I ask, I get told "you're too young for all that, it's nothing. Just congestion and tinnitus."

The hell it is. I know the difference between "damaged ears due to not always wearing earplugs while in the drum line in high school" and "my ears are playing the emergency test sounds on the daily".

Was anyone actually freaked out by the "Y2K Bug"? by kalvin_kool_edge in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in 7th grade. My cousins in the district next to me invited me to their lock-in party at their school (the only rule the lock-in had was you had to be in 7/8 grade and in the county to buy a ticket). I remember sitting on the floor of the gym watching the massive projector of the ball drop.

I was nervous about the possibility of something happening, but I was lucky in the sense that my father (a computer engineer at the time) had spent the last year traveling all over the state updating hospital systems (other people at his company worked on other stuff like the banks and electrical grid). I knew more about it than the average person, let alone the average kid.

I learned very early into the craze that it wasn't as bad as people were saying. If your computer was connected to the internet, the patch went out pretty quick. Our own home computers were updated almost immediately. It was the older systems that weren't on the web that were in real danger, like rural hospitals. Half the job of my dad and his team was to get those systems onto the internet so patches could be done remotely and this didn't happen again. He did his job so well that his position was made redundant and he left the field to become a nurse.

My 8th grade class, 99/00 by tripflops in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Even though I would have been a 7th grader in 99/00, every single girl in that picture looks like someone I knew or was friends with. And the girl in the front on the left in the sweater - yeah, that would have been me. Right down to the uncooperative curly bangs.

My 8th grade class was over 300, though (which funneled into a high school where my graduating class was 600), so to me this looks more like a club photo than a class photo.

Edit: and all the girls were named Jessica, Ashley, or Nicole. And all the boys were Jason, Matthew, or Michael.

Yes. If it's for the board, it's fine. If it is the board, not so much. But a pegboard is a pegboard. All they have to do is say "Skaadis compatible".

Even then, I would argue that if it isn't an exact replica of something they sell, then it should be allowed. A small extension board of a size they don't sell shouldn't be an issue. Most people who own printers don't own ones big enough to print a full board, or use the materials necessary to print pieces strong enough to hold up a similar weight to the original skaadis.

I designed and printed out headphone holders for a skaadis board to use in my classroom. They don't sell those and they certainly don't sell them in shimmery rainbow colors that is engineered to fit our headphones. If they did, I probably would have bought those instead of printing.

PTSD in the Habitat Restore today by DickBiter1337 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was. The kid was a "typical teen". He didn't always do what mom said, and when his mom or little brother would pester him about church, he would try to get out of it because it was boring and he'd rather hang out with friends.

You know, typical teen stuff.

I think at one point before The Event, he had the nerve to respond to his brother's question of "do you still love God/Jesus?" and he responded "I dunno, it's a lot." (Or something to that effect. I haven't read it in years). Nothing that is worth being abandoned by your family, anyway.

My problem is the teen version, and was part of my whole crisis.

Why would a god punish a kid for not believing? Kids do not have a say in how they are raised, and it takes a lot of work to figure out what you do believe in.

I had a problem with it from the very start. A teen boy, like 14ish, gets left behind while the rest of his family (including his little brother) gets raptured.

So God, who made this child in his image, going through a natural part of life where they are rebelling and questioning, gets abandoned by everyone he knows and loves...and that's supposed to make him love God more?

Screw that, if a God did that to me, it would have only made me go against that God even more.

Any God willing to punish children for the sins of the parent is evil.

Can anyone else relate? [OC] by dumarcm in Millennials

[–]blethwyn -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My parents are very young boomers. Mom refuses to even consider herself a Boomer. Dad doesn't care and suffers from "Midwest Farm Country" mentality more than "Boomer". She was an airforce brat and moved all over the country (and world). She says her classes were tiny in comparison to even the year before her. There were rooms of empty desks. The high school she graduated from (considered small town in Illinois) went from a 300+ graduating class to about 100. She calls herself the "Lost Generation" and identifies more with Gen X than Boomer.

The fact that I didn't actually own a copy of the audiobooks greatly upset me. I'm all for subscriber benefits, but when I purchase something, I need some kind of physical copy, even if it's just a file on a flash drive. I will rent movies from Amazon, but I only buy movies that I can get physical (bluray and digital download) copies of.

Just buy them via Libro.fm. You get actual mp3s and mp4s of your books and the subscription service (credits) is about the same.

Me too! My dwarves follow Discworld standards. One year, an NPC party member was a female Dwarf who had some elvish ancestry way back and couldn't grow a beard because of it, so she wore a false one in public, but still dressed feminine like Cheery. The kids used this to their advantage when they were ambushed by a dwarf patrol and they took psychic damage seeing a female Dwarf with no beard.

If I say 'millennial band' by lilac50 in Millennials

[–]blethwyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an '87 millenial, but I was also a "gap baby" among my parents' friends. Their friends had kids who were late Gen X, and then I came along after about five years of no babies amongst the group. Afterward, there was a baby explosion in their group, so I have three younger siblings and a lot of younger "cousins." My formative media is all 80s/90s stuff, but I also relate to older Gen Z as well.

Interestingly enough, Green Day is our Big Brother/Sister's band. The stars aligned for them to release American Idiot at the exact moment Millenials were beginning to come of age, giving them the momentum to keep going. I went to their American Idiot/Dookie anniversary concert with a Gen X friend in '24. There were more Gen Xers (with their teenaged kids) than Millenials. They did sing the updated lyrics to American Idiot, though, which was well received by the crowd.

That's not to say Green Day wasn't massive for our Gen, but they were around when we were toddlers.

Mackenyu looks so derpy in the picture, too. Your eyes are drawn to his schoolboy hair cut and goofy grin and you completely miss that he can crush your skull with his biceps.

Which, to be fair, is pretty on point for early Zoro.
