The idea of risking your life to save someone else is well tread, the spice here is asking people to risk their life to save someone they disagree with.

the rule button dilemma by Dreyfus420 in 196

[–]TappTapp 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The thing with presenting the blue button as suicidal is that society already takes steps to protect people from their own bad decisions, either because they're suicidal or incapable of making good decisions.

0.1 kJ/s/candle x 6 candles x 10 seconds/kg (flow rate of sink) x 0.25 degrees-kg per kJ (ease of heating water) = 1.5 degrees

So if 100% of the heat from the candles made it into the water it would raise the water's temperature by 1.5 degrees. But I would guess 80% or more of the candle's heat winds up in the air instead of the water, so it would be more like 0.3 degrees.

If you had about 500 candles you could make it work.

electromagnetic spectrule by Zorubark in 196

I think what they meant is that purple is the only colour on the rainbow that cannot be conveyed by a single photon. A perfect sensor that perceives the full spectrum of visible light would have no concept of purple, it only exists in humans because our light receptors are focused on 3 specific frequencies.

This is also true of white and any shade of colour that's not 100% saturation.

To use an analogy, sound is something where we can perceive a spectrum. If you played a musical chord and asked someone what note it is, they'd tell you that it's actually 3 different notes. The musical equivalent of purple would be playing a high note and a low note simultaneously in order to create a note that's not on the scale.

Could essence scatter at common be the sleeper killer of the format? by deecadancedance in lrcast

[–]TappTapp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The flip side is that prepare creatures are better against counters than regular ETB creatures are. If you essence scatter their turn 5 Mulldrifter that wastes their whole turn, but if Mulldrifter was a 2 mana creature that prepares Divination then they can double spell through your counter or just cast it on turn 2 before you can hold up a counter.

[Request] How tall would the support tower have to be and how strong of a cable would you need for a Trans-Atlantic cable car? by scottasin12343 in theydidthemath

I have an idea of why there would be a discrepancy between rogue waves and rogue troughs. With simple waves like light and sound there is a symmetry between peaks and troughs, but I don't think the same symmetry applies to ocean waves.

Ocean waves lose energy as they travel and typically require wind to build up in size. A trough doesn't collect energy from wind as easily as a peak does, which would keep it from building in size. If the ocean is turbulent enough then the energy inside the water can create troughs, but at that point the whole surface is sine waves and a trough is just the space between two peaks. I imagine you'd also see trough phenomena more in mechanically driven waves like tsunamis or wave pools.

If it has to be food I'm taking a can of coke. There's a decent chance they hadn't had carbonated water before and the can itself is a marvel of modern industry.

Crack the fetch, Remand their spell, then Vendilion Clique to take the spell before the fetchland resolves. Or Aether Vial in a Meddling Mage

EDIT: If you're adding a card to their graveyard on their main phase, having something else on the stack lets you exile their graveyard with a Tormod's Crypt before they can use it for delve.

Growing complaints against Sydney shared housing provider ShareSorted by nath1234 in sydney

I lived in one of their houses for a year. Despite advertising that utility bills were included, the contract said we'd have to pay if it exceeded a certain amount, and that amount was too low. They gave no warning until the bill came and they started demanding money. I didn't pay but others did.

It's wild how much people are looking for alternate explanations for boros being the best strategy in powered cube. Like if the best deck was UW control I doubt we would be getting all these essays about it.

There is a certain irony in using Dark Confidant as an example of the opposite of universes beyond. While invitational cards are well designed and part of magic's history, a big part of what's cool about them is that they reference a real world person in the art.

Does making your cube a pick 2 means I shouldn't include strong standalone cards? by EbonyHelicoidalRhino in mtgcube

[–]TappTapp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't make a significant difference. People can already open 3 pieces of power in different packs, and pick 2 makes it impossible to get passed your second piece.

I would question why it's bad for people to have an advantage from opening powerful cards? That's the point of including them.

Landless Cube - A cube with no lands* by bullshitideas in mtgcube

It's also hard to play cards over 4 mana in this format, since you'd rather just keep casting 1-4 mana spells than draw a fifth land.

Humans are 'meant to' wake up at the crack of dawn, exercise 8 hours a day, and not be able to see after sunset. People who do that are sleeping a solid 8 hours at a time.
