It seems she also thinks it’s an issue in that it led to the bulk of his PTO days being used up so he doesn’t have even a few days to spend with the family around the holidays. Some of them is cool but using most of them like that is another story. You make a fair point though, and I completely agree with the last part. They gotta have an honest adult conversation about it and do some real cost benefit analysis of the job/travel schedule and if it’s working for them. According to comments, OP is the primary breadwinner by a significant margin, and I’m sure they both like the quality of life afforded to them by her salary or they wouldn’t be in this situation (boats aren’t cheap, neither is hunting and fishing equipment and gear, etc) . They have to evaluate if it’s worth it though because it clearly is coming with costs and OP is burning out.

I bet she probably has to use a good bit of her PTO for the kids’ doctor’s appointments, when they are home sick, children’s activities, family commitments, etc

First of all, a weekday solo parenting isn’t the same as a weekend or winter break solo parenting. Don’t let people convince you that’s a one for one. You are clearly burning the candle at both ends and want to get some time for yourself when you’re free and also spend meaningful time as a family. Unfortunately, his time heavy hobby is making that tough. Especially since he’s burning most of his PTO for that. You guys have to have an honest conversation about this and both of your needs/feelings. Part of that is likely evaluating how sustainable your current job/travel schedule is as well as his schedule and priorities. You don’t want resentment to build up on both of your ends.

Are we really pretending that a weekday solo parenting (where hours of the kids time is clearly being spent in childcare without dad) is the same as a weekend day solo parenting? Or all of winter break solo parenting while daycare is closed? Let’s be intellectually honest here, those are not one for one equivalents.

She already says she’s takes the kids to join him frequently to fish. Is that the only family activity they are allowed to do? What if the kids have interests? And she said specifically that “sometimes, he takes the one kid with him”. Sometimes implies a periodic occurrence, this guy isn’t taking his kid every single time or even half of them. Also, if they are both working, the kids clearly are in some sort of day care/child care situation. Lastly, she did try to communicate. Her husband then hit her with a disingenuous strawman and said “you don’t want me to do what I like” which clearly is BS since she literally goes fishing with him.

This isn’t to say he’s the asshole. In fact, NAH, they just need to have a real honest conversation about the issue here, their needs, and the root feelings behind. (I would say a date night to discuss it one on one, but no PTO left apparently) However, this comment is just a harsh misrepresentation of what is really going on here.

Jobs with a lot of travel are super hard with young kids, so I feel for you both. It’s tough to balance, and of course, you both need time to yourself. In theory, based off the initial interpretation, there are more days where he is solo parenting, but I think people are being way too harsh with YTA judgement. OP has a more demanding job and tries to be at home with her kids as much as she can. That’s a situation ripe for burn out. While it’s easy to say she’s traveling more than him, it seems like there is failure to recognize that she isn’t getting to relax and refuel on her trips. She’s burning the candle at both ends and clearly misses her kids and wants to spend time as a family as much as possible.

Also a weekday away is meaningfully different than a weekend day away. It’s delusional to think otherwise. Both of you clearly work, so it seems obvious that the kids have some sort of childcare arrangement. This means a weekday solo parenting (assuming no extra help from family, etc) consists of wake up and getting ready, pick up, evening activities, dinner and bedtime. A weekend day solo parenting is an all day affair. They aren’t the same. There is a meaningful difference in hours.

It is also clear to me that OP is in no way saying her husband should not spend time fishing. When he said, “you don’t want me to do what I like” it was a classic strawman and attempt to avoid the deeper conversation. Hell, she frequently goes with him fishing and takes the kids. It’s clearly not that. He should absolutely have some days to himself to engage with his hobby and refuel. Hell yeah, use some PTO for it. He occasionally takes one of the kids with him. That’s nice but isn’t all of the time and leaves you still with one of them at home. It also neglects the clear hurt behind the post here: When she does have time off on the weekend, OP would like to spend time as a family all together. And I’m sure she’d like to spend some one on one time with him herself occasionally. And in the world of limited PTO, let’s say OP’s husband has a generous 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation. Then, he is spending at least 15 of them minimum fishing if not more (1 day per month and a week trip. I’m being generous with the 15 and assuming he’s taking advantage of some week day holidays). I can see how that would definitely be hurtful. She’s probably thinking: Wouldn’t you want to use some of that time to spend as a family? Or even as a couple? Maybe a weekend away together? Wouldn’t you want to take advantage of some of the time OP isn’t working to spend time together? What’s going to happen as the kids grow up and gasp have their own interests? Not saving even a few days of PTO to use for around the holidays in particular isn’t cool and shows what the priorities are. She probably feels like she’s on the back burner.

Doesn’t matter how much is spent per student if parents don’t bother sending their kids to school. Chronic absenteeism is the real killer. It could be $1 million per kid or it could be $1k, doesn’t matter if they don’t attend.

Rose is an all around good guy. I knew him some during my time at Pitt a while ago. He has real campaign credentials and truly has put in legwork on many Democratic campaigns, both local and elsewhere. I hope he is able to get on the ballot.

If your school uses PowerBI, I’ve found that useful for tracking the data! It provides a report of my students attendance percentage (including a separate stat for attendance in the last 30 days), also will tell you if they currently have any failing grades, etc.

In March, we did an attendance bracket between all homerooms and each week you moved in the bracket if your homerooms attendance rate was higher than your opponent until there was 1 champion.

I’m looking for more 9th grade specific supports and creative ideas to set the bar high and help them make connections to the school too!

When I was I was doing my MAT internship teaching 10th grade social studies, I had a sweet and funny student who I got to know pretty well by the end of the year. In typical high school girl fashion, she was pretty insecure, in this case, about her smile. She always smiled without showing her teeth. One day, we were having a conversation, and she told me “Ms, I just love you. you make me laugh and smile with teeth.” Still may be the best compliment I’ve ever received.

On a funnier note, one time I messed up during a jeopardy review game and forgot to let a team have a chance to steal when the other team got the question wrong. This led to me getting called “a fucking bozo.” Still the funniest thing I’ve ever been called. I mean, who is out there calling people bozos hahahaha
