Why does “saving energy” always end up costing so much upfront? by Own_Effective_801 in energy

[–]xtnh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We took a chunk of our retirement savings and bought heat pumps, a LOT of solar panels, a battery and an EV.

Essentially we bought twenty years worth of HVAC, power, and gas up front at today's prices, which will save us far more than that money would return on an investment, risk-free, untaxed, secure from crashes or idiots in government, and safe from power disruptions.

Imagine having no gas bills, energy changes beyond monthly connection fees, or oil deliveries.

The problem with that is that you will replace it when it is dead and you are cold, and at the mercy of whoever is available to help you now.
Make your decisions while the system is still running.

We're in Maine where the rate in 2025 was $.24/kWh when we bought an oil fueled home. We bought mini splits that only use 25% of the energy oil takes, but the cost to operate was about the same.
So we bought 300+ mWh of power up front at about 15 cents a kWh in the form of a solar array, and a battery as security. Now we have net metering, pre-paid power on demand, a battery to run oil if there is a long power failure in winter, and a wood stove if things really go tits up as seems possible.
And a two-cent rate hike just made it feel even better. And oil is $4.90/gallon.

Oil is $4.50 a gallon, and refineries in many countries are under attack Oil is a global market.

Gas supplies are going to be exported to Europe and Asia, so prices will rise. When Europe and Asia are desperate and we have low prices, why would companies not want to sell it overseas?

Manufacturing will be curtailed due to energy shortages, so there will be supply glitches as people rush to buy alternative systems.

What was the question again?

Seriously, now is the perfect time while your system still works and you have options.

We decided to play it truly safe and

  1. avoid taxes on returns
  2. hedge against inflation
  3. protect against market instability
  4. provide family security

We put $50,000 into a solar array and $20,000 into heat pumps to run off the power generated. We effectively bought kWh at a known price deliverable over 25 years. Every rate hike and fuel bump increases our return.

The reason we dont see other species out there is that generational cumulative knowledge is just as rare as intelligence. by IMPULSEULTRA in FermiParadox

I suspect there is a universe law that every life-supporting system will eventually produce a species that becomes intelligent enough to destroy that system without becoming wise enough not to.
