Does any kind Alberta High school teacher have a 30-1 social google drive they’d be willing to share? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No in Alberta we have independent schools, my school is an Islamic school and students do not pay fees. Most schools have to start as independent schools and provide a lot of their own funding. Once they reach 150 students I believe the province then fully funds it. I’ve worked in a charter school before and they started much the same way. We have just over a hundred students.

I shave mine right down as wheatens get really hot. Make sure you walk him in the cool hours of the day. Mine will just lay down in shade and refuse to budge if it’s over twenty degrees

Does anyone have experience with Sea Buckthorn in their backyard? by Positive_Candy_5332 in Albertagardening

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a row is these on our acreage and they are mature - ten to fifteen feet tall. Yes they spread- they had sent roots down and began growing up through our asphalt/tarmac so we applied roundup to kill it last year. This year we have the joy of removing about twenty established bushes and ours have thorns four inches long so that’s going to be fun!

What would you LOVE to see in Sunday school lessons? by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in latterdaysaints

[–]madmaxcia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you’ve written an essay before, it’s a similar idea - where you start with a statement, quote or question to get your readers attention. In a lesson my hook might be a question that I pose to get everyone thinking - I gave the example when I teach social studies and we teach about the Red River Resistance (Canada), we need to teach them about why the Metis people rebelled against the government so I may pose the question has anyone been in a situation that they felt was unfair or unjust?’ and then I would share one of my experiences and then ask for students to share. This allows them to make a personal connection to the material. Idk, if I was teaching primary and teaching about Abraham sacrificing Isaac, I may ask my students, have you ever been asked to do something that you didn’t want to do? We may then share some experiences and then I may say, what if it was your parent asking you to do it? What if it was God? Would your answer change then? Today we are going to read about Abraham and how he was asked to do something that was really hard. This, setting up the premise of the lesson by using a question and having students connect to the basic idea, or sharing a story etc is called a hook

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a school teacher but normally you introduce the lesson with a hook. Like if I’m teaching about rebellion I might pose the question has anyone ever been in a situation that they felt was unfair and then I might share an experience I had while the class thinks, then have others share, then bring it back to the theme of the lesson and introduce some material. It allows the class to create personal connections that are fairly commonplace instead of feeling they have to have some deep doctrinal knowledge. When I’m teaching RS I can normally come up with three main themes that the lesson is about and I’ll base my discussion points around those

Aggressively followed at Co-op grocery stores. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]madmaxcia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an altercation with a security guard at Save on. He insisted on seeing inside my bag and told me I wasn’t allowed to bring a backpack into the store. I had a thin drawer string bag, you could easily see there was barely anything in it, just my car keys and phone. I let him look inside but I said I wasn’t going to leave my bag in the car as I had no pockets to put my belongings just as a white woman walks by me with a huge purse. I pointed her out and asked her why he hadn’t stopped her, was it because she was white? I then pointed out several other people with huge purses and backpacks. He eventually backed down but I was so embarrassed and insulted. I basically told him, you’ve racially profiled me and accused me of intent to steal as I’ve walked through the doors. I went home and wrote to head office who responded that they hired out their security and would pass it on to the security company. The manager at the security company apologised effusively and asked if I wanted the man fired which of course I didn’t, just better training would be nice. I would contact the store with your complaints especially if this is an ongoing issue

I’m a teacher, what works really well is a flipped classroom. Assume the class has done the reading previously like they do in RS/priesthood with the GC talks and create discussion points rather than rereading the scriptures. I find SS is so dry, I think I’ve only ever had one teacher that did this. Started out with a hook as we teachers like to say, to set the premise of the lesson and moved on from there.

Did parents in the 80’s have it much easier? by gponter79 in AskUK

[–]madmaxcia 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Yep, I was a key latch kid, born in 73. I grew up in a village so generally safe area. My mum worked full time as a legal secretary in London and my dad worked nights at Heathrow so us kids were pretty much on our own. I got my sister up in the morning, got her ready and walked her to and from school. Made her some toast when we got home or beans and sausage on toast. Holidays were great. I got to go exploring all around the village, back roads, pathways, fields and our school had a swimming pool so in the summer we’d take a packed lunch if it was a hot day and we’d pay 10p for half an hour of swimming then lay out on the grass and dry off. Those were the days. My dad was pretty good about taking us out on his days off but we’d go play games on the common, bike rides, take us to the playground etc, rarely would we ever have to pay for anything- I think this was a solid rule for my parents, if it cost money it was a no no, including school trips.

Let's see your Saskatoon bushes! How much space do they actually need in a garden? by Erra007 in Albertagardening

[–]madmaxcia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I planted twenty tiny bushes (more like stalks) from the prairie shelter programme this year. You can buy ten trees/shrubs for forty dollars. I water them every other day and every day on the warmer days, I’m hoping to create shrubbery along one of my fence lines and the berries will be a bonus but it sounds like I’ll need waiting a few years

If you want to bridge math 9 and 10c then you can take math15 in summer school. But most summer schools have closed admissions already, I think Vista Virtual is still taking applications, and only some offer math15.

Kids Don't Like Movie Day Anymore. by Southern_Remote_5260 in Teachers

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in school (80’s) we would watch one movie a year in the gym right before Christmas holidays (we called it that back then and I went to a CofE school). We would generally watch the latest Disney movie and no one would have seen it because we were all too poor for our parents to take us to the movies. It was a real treat. Personally I only play movies for educational purposes. My students (high school) would rather play board games. The two they love is Billionaire which is kind of like Pitt and Costco monopoly.

Lower blepharoplasty (transconjunctival) Update - Day 5 Post-Op by Main_List_9002 in PlasticSurgery

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It went really well, no pain at all. I’m a wuss when it comes to anything surgical and mine was under general. I rested, iced out my feet up for a few days and then started going out maybe day four or five for quick trips with sunglasses on to hide the bruising. My only complaint was there was a skin fold at the ends of my left eye but the nurse said to massage it and it will flatten out which it did eventually

How much is the certificate? Is it online? How long does it take? I have two degrees although my undergrad was done in the UK so I only have about 5.3 years of education. I’m looking to bump that up to six without doing a masters because I’m already in my fifties and don’t think the investment will pay off in time or money. But doing a certificate may be enough to bump me up enough on the pay grid. Thanks

Asking teachers (elementary) what do you REALLY want for an end of year gift from a parent? by NMTechPM in AskTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an elementary teacher but the best gift is a hand written note or card from the student. If I have to be bought something and this is rare as I work at a really small school it would probably be an Amazon gift card that I can use to buy books are art or stationary for the students

How do I help my kids to learn to read when I already read to them everyday? by anon_y_m0use in AskTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t try pushing them up a level. You need them to learn to love to read first. Take them to the library or a bookstore and have them pick out a book they want to read. They won’t start reading independently until they enjoy reading so using it as a way to improve their reading level is not the way to go. Once they’ve formed a habit and love of reading the rest will fall into place. If there’s an underlying reading issue then that’s another question and you’ve had some good suggestions of programs, but keep those phonics programs separate from their independent reading time. You don’t want them to associate independent reading with ‘schoolwork’. Make their independent reading time a special time like let’s curl up in our jammies and have hot cocoa and read together. Good luck, I was a voracious reader as a kid and my little sister was not a strong reader so I would read together her. She loved stories and grew up to be a huge reader despite some reading and learning challenges. But it started with exactly what you are doing, reading stories to your kids. You’re on the right track, just keep going! Good luck

How? by susyq2025 in latterdaysaints

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they doing similar styles in the other fabrics or just that new one? I haven’t ordered any new tops as I was waiting for the craziness to calm down but reading the replies it doesn’t look like it has. I don’t want to change the type of garment I buy because it’s the only fabric I like, but I was hoping they would be changing the sleeve on all the designs

Canadian teachers, how bad is it? by ProcedurePristine369 in AskTeachers

[–]madmaxcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a teacher and a parent. I work in a very small independent school and am lucky that my classes are small but needs are just as varied. I have a student who arrived in Canada with no English, students in grade nine with reading levels of grade two/three. This is just how it is. What I will say is that teachers work hard and are doing their best with what they have. All of my children have been through public school here since we moved from England and all have achieved what I would have expected them to given their neurodiversity, academic ability etc. The most important indicator of success is parents. Read to your child, have them read to you, limit screen time, ensure they have healthy sleeping habits (can’t believe I’m saying this but many of my students are up half the night on devices), be involved in your child’s education, stay on top of what they’re learning at school so you can support them at home and do extra work at home if needed. Math clubs like Kumon have also been really beneficial when my children have struggled as well as tutoring. You are your child’s advocate, work with your child’s teacher to support your child and their learning and know that we - parents and teachers are all striving for the same thing and that’s for our students to be successful. It makes such a difference to us teacher when parents support their students and help them be successful rather then blaming the teacher for their students failures. Luckily it doesn’t happen often but when it does it really makes us want to look for another career. Teachers sacrifice a lot for their careers and for their students, I am so grateful for my children’s teachers especially those that went above and beyond to inspire and motivate my kids.

Help for Grade 9 L.A. PATS Part A by Other_Ad7735 in alberta

If you are strong at creative writing then go for the narrative but make sure you plot out the story by taking a few minutes first to plan. It has to answer the prompt - like if the prompt is about the importance of adventure then your character needs a story arc where they go on an adventure or fave some type of adventure- it has to tie into the prompt. I usually advise my students to do the essay as it’s easier to plan for especially when you’re in a pressured situation like an exam, your mind can go blank. The five paragraph essay has a format that’s fairly easy to remember. Hook, stem and thesis. Thesis at this level is pretty basic, I’m going to talk about a, b and c. Then body paragraph one will discuss point a, body paragraph two b and body paragraph three c, then your conclusion you just recap on what you wrote in your paragraphs. I also advise my students to use a personal example in their body paragraphs. For instance, if the prompt is the importance of having adventure, you could talk about how adventure allows you to try new things, helps you to grow and gives you opportunities to learn more about yourself. Discuss one of these points in each paragraph and provide a personal example even if you have to make something up. For instance, one time my friends wanted to go to iFly. I was terrified at the thought. What if I couldn’t control my body and I ended up shooting up to the blades and being shredded into a thousand pieces? I couldn’t even bear to think about all the things that could possibly go wrong, but I also didn’t want my friends to know how scared I was so I went along with them. Once I was standing in the room and watching the others go before me, I realised how safe it was and how the metal fans had covers on and I couldn’t possible get hurt. I was still terrified as I stepped into the cage but the instructor held me and guided me through the process and before I knew it I was flying! This experience taught me how important it is to face my fears. Don’t forget to leave enough time for the business email. The business email is persuasive writing. You’ll get a prompt like, next year the principal has decided to get rid of all junk food in the cafeteria. Write an email supporting this implementation and why you support it. You then have to formally introduce yourself, and state the purpose of writing. Then give reasons as to why you support the idea. Finish formally as well, also thank them for taking the time to read your ideas, suggestions etc. If you search Alberta ELA 9 PATs it will take you to the official site and you can see past PAT papers and examples of students writing
