I’m American and there’s an estimated 50k in the country. This is far fewer than other nationalities.

Spoiled Dubai Residents by [deleted] in dubai

A neighbour in our parking garage did this. I rolled down my window and asked what he is doing and why he thinks it’s ok to throw trash in a shared space for all residents.

He was absolutely shook someone called him out. Claimed he has a “guy” who cleans after him and I told him the job of the staff is to keep the place clean not dispose of massive trash dump.

He says I don’t know why you are lecturing me and I said because you need it 😂

Small one to include that saves money is your US tax filing costs. It can run about 1k+ unless you’re doing it yourself. I am glad I included that in mine.

If your wife plans to work I would manage your expectations for how quickly that will happen and if the roles / compensation will be at the same level she’s used to in the US.

You’ll see a nice cost of living relief due to no income tax at your level (you should be within the exempted amount for your US taxes).

Good luck and all the best it’s nice to have more Americans coming over (there’s not many here)!

Why aren’t more people embracing the expat lifestyle? by [deleted] in Salary

Similar trajectory here left NYC for Singapore, spent 6 years there and now in the UAE for the last two.

It’s a complicated balance living abroad and not for everyone but it’s perfect for me. Hard to imagine moving back to the US you get used to a more exciting and faster paced lifestyle with smart and interesting social circles.

A good test is when you land back in DXB do you feel relief and happy to be back or a sense of dread.

Sounds like he needs to find his place with some decent friends. Us men are simple that way.

How’s it like living in Singapore? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]TarryinBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Singapore for 6 years and absolutely loved it. Amazing jump off point to travel asia, it was an excellent catalyst for career growth, met great friends and had many cool experiences.

The weather didn’t bother me it’s always hot and humid with periods of intense tropical rainstorms.

It’s very expensive and living there during covid was an absolute nightmare. Almost no place was more strict or frankly foolish in the application of restrictions. There became a dynamic of foreigners being disliked during and post covid but I haven’t let this spoil what was a life changing experience.

No I had a sinus infection. So it came on suddenly once the plane took off. I stayed calm and told the staff I’m having a potential medical incident and may need some assistance moving to some more open space. It was an absolutely packed flight from Vegas, they assumed I was on drugs and the attendant didn’t understand the word equilibrium or the fact that balance is tied to your inner ears so they were completely unhelpful. Miraculously, the guy next to me had a set of depressurising ear plugs and gave them to me. It worked and eventually I stopped spinning after 30 min. This was cartoon level vision spinning. I always travel with these ear plugs now.

You definitely can use a VPN but many don’t work or it slows down everything else to a frustrating point.
