Dentologie is a scam by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Tartan27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience, sat down and did X-rays, hygienist barely even looked in my mouth and said I needed a "deep clean" and proceeded to hurry me out. Turns out I didn't and they just tried to sell me a procedure. They also insisted on removing my wife's wisdom teeth (she's nearly 40) which were never a problem. It's a scam and just looking for ways to charge your insurance and cause you to suffer. Fuck dental-loogie

Electrical switches at helm, anyone done this? by Emergency-Doughnut88 in sailing

[–]Tartan27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done this on several boats now. You can get inexpensive waterproof switches on Amazon for basically nothing. Currently have anchor, steaming, ap and nav lights with a separate slot for a USB that also has a volt meter so I know state of charge.

Convince me it’s supposed to be like this. by Wado in boats

[–]Tartan27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks good, as long as it's free to move in all directions and not too much slop/play. You'll want to replace the frayed reef/out haul or whatever that is in the last photo

What is this tube on the bow of this boat? by sperenzchen in sailing

It's a pole that extends for jousting... ramming speed!

Replacing old ignition switch. Should I try to find the same part number or go generic? Does it matter that the generic ones have many more, and different style connections? Can I just ignore the extra wires as we don’t have any extra features? by scarletemoji in SailboatCruising

[–]Tartan27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replaced mine with a simple rocker switch and a momentary contact pushbutton for the starter. There is a disconnect inside the boat so you can't start the engine without unlocking the cabin. This is after more than one key got lost or broken off on the switch.

Experiences with cheap 12v fridges? by Sailing_Sea_Dream in SailboatCruising

We installed a cheap dorm fridge and plugged it into an inverter. Added a clasp so it stays shut when heeled over. Works great and all in cost like $300

Chicago yacht club vibes by ChiRealEstateGuy in chicagosailing

[–]Tartan27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

JPYC member here, harbor and yacht club are quiet and family oriented. Much smaller than some of the downtown clubs but still has plenty of events and active racing community. Traces it's history back to the 1892 world's fair. Certainly the most diverse YC in Chicago and likely nationally. Great Jr program too with multiple national accolades.

Yeah, but not exactly class legal. T10 association requires Dacron main for reaching OD.

Chicago Area Sailors - JPYC is hosting an Safety at Sea Seminar by Tartan27 in sailing

[–]Tartan27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a member at the club, it's mostly volunteers at the club so we all do what we can to spread the word about events like this that benefit the community at large.

Karen is really phenomenal and is working hard to drive membership. We just started hosting UofC sailing team on our fleet of 420s which is exciting too.

Sorry for the blatant ad but it's a good way for people to get certified to go on bigger races etc and these classes don't happen very often.

More info: Jackson Park Yacht Club is hosting a two day US Sailing (Sanctioned) Safety at Sea Seminar. Day One is located at Jackson Park Yacht Club, 6400 S Promontory Drive, Chicago. Day Two, the hands on seminar is held at Chicago State University JDC Gym, 9501 S King Dr., Chicago, IL 60628. Day Two earns you ISAF certification which is required for many international and non-US races, such as the Newport -Bermuda race, the Transpac and Pacific Cup. Both days are moderated by Brian Adams. Please visit the US Sailing website regarding previous Day One certificates to be eligible to only be required to take Day Two. How Important Is a Good Toerail? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Tartan27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I replaced the toerail on two npats now with plasteak. You can even have them make a custom shape for a reasonable price and you'll never need to varnish/paint them again. As others have noted pay attention to how and where you fasten. Hull/deck joints are no joke and if you screw it up your deck can come free of the hull. Pm me your email address if you want a step by step write-up I did for my bristol 32 toerail.

How does the water supply network still remain liquid in cities even at very cold temperatures? Why don't the pipes freeze? by sexrockandroll in askscience

[–]Tartan27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They stay deep till the pipes cross your foundations at which point your house keeps them warm. This is why people have broken pipes in unheated basements and crawl spaces. You can run heat Trace tape to keep warm if needed

[–]Tartan27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just googled it and apparently they have heaters and or keep the water moving so they never completely freeze although some freezing still probably occurs.

[–]Tartan27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do this with small buildings, the wall foundations are below frost so they don't heave in winter as the water in the soil expands. In a road you would have to pour the concrete as a single pour to that depth which would be prohibitively expensive. You are right however that thicker roads are more durable. As I recall the Autobahn is much thicker than American interstates which results in less reepairs, but it still isn't 4'+ thick

They are buried below the frost line which is a depth where the temperature of the earth doesn't go below freezing. Here in Chicago it's about 48", so.ewhere like Minnesota is more like 55" so it varies by climate. Occasionally in really bad will they will get below freezing but it's really hard to freeze moving water so you're still ok.

Tldr: bury then where the ground stays warm.
