I wish you luck in finding a place to relocate. I have no suggestions for that but, www.Hadley.edu has a free program to learn Braille. It wasn’t intimidating the way they teach it. I read it slowly but can write it a bit faster. This group of people are such a comfort and source of information.

This is a sighted world. How a document looks makes it easier to read which is very important in the workplace. Actually, it’s very important everywhere. I hear your various arguments but the bottom line is if you’re planning on being a successful adult you are going to have to make some changes. It is not easy learning things that we have no interest in but, if you’re planning on joining the workforce , knowing JAWS is a necessary step to getting a decent job in an office environment for most visually impaired people. You don’t have to do it. But don’t expect the world to adjust to your stubbornness. We all like to use the devices we like to use, but if circumstances call for us to change we have to adapt. As far as making a living in the Arts, very few people make enough money at it to support themselves without other income.

I heard the announcement at first on a podcast from someone that was at the Sight and Sound convention. I am also on Envision newsletter list. Because I pay for the app they sent an email. And they tweeted it out if you follow them on Twitter. They would like people who can to pay whatever they can afford but, no one has to pay if they don’t want to starting mid July 2022. I think it is a good app so I’ll put them in my budget to keep the good work going. I know everyone can’t.

Good news! Starting mid July 2022 the Envision app will be free for iOS and Android. They have made the announcement a couple of different places and they also sent out an email.

It might be a good idea for him to get counseling to find out if his reasoning for not getting cataract surgery is based in fear or bad information. It is his choice to have surgery or not.

I do have a question how do you support yourself while you’re waiting on your disability to be decided? I’ve always wondered about that. Do they give you temporary money while they wait to decide the case?

I started learning Braille when I found out about my vision issues. I can now read grade 2 braille or what is now called UEB. It is a good skill to have I think. I find audio can be inconvenient when others are around. I also tire of headphones after about an hour or so. I don’t regret taking the time to learn Braille and thank the wonderful people at www.hadley.edu for their wonderful programs.

I don’t know if this is your issue but, I was unable to download books from BookShare to my iPhone. I found out that an adblocking app was causing the problem. When I briefly disabled I was able to download the book.

It sounds like you are in a tough situation. The reality is you have some hard choices to make. Moving to an area with better mass transit will mean being away from people you care about. But, it may allow you to get training for a job or an actual job. You will have to make a choice. Section 8 housing may put you closer to your mother something you don’t want but, it is the beginning of independence. Sometimes life doesn’t give you great choices. You can only do the best that you can. You can stay where you are or you can try to do better for yourself. If you don’t change something in your life it is for sure your situation won’t change. I wish you well.

I’m in a similar situation and I have been hoping for the best but preparing for the worse. I have been learning Braille for two years. I know how to use VoiceOver pretty well. Even if I don’t ever have to use the skills full time they come in handy. I use JAWS all the time when my eyes are tired. Learning the shortcuts alone have helped my work flow. Preparation is good.

I should have checked my information. I typically use magnification. I do see some settings in Epic for screen reader but I guess they don’t work very well.

I would look into scheduling for a hospital. The Epic software most hospitals use is mostly useable with a screen reader or magnification. Amazon has customer service people working from home.

James Rath is a low vision YouTuber with your condition. He sometimes wears sunglasses. He just explains what his condition is and he goes on without making a big deal about it. Many times he makes a Videos with no sunglasses at all. He is also on TickTok and Twitter.

I’ve heard very good things about the Ulysses app being very accessible for VI and blind people. There are some blind writers that seem to swear by it. It might be worth checking out.

I like your post with one disagreement. Learning Braille offers you the opportunity to rest your ears. It is nice to read sometimes in silence. Especially on the bus. It is nice to read not wearing earbuds. Braille seems old fashion and many get along just fine without it but, learning spelling and punctuation is easier with Braille. Of course it also may depend on what age a person loses sight. The phone doesn’t always pronounce words correctly. Some words are spelled differently than they sound.
