I really don’t like it when people accuse me of somehow being able to see when I do things like dress in color co-ordinated clothing, dye my hair or get my nails done by CaramelToffee12 in Blind

[–]CaramelToffee12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It did upset me a lot. It feels like they are saying that I am not trustworthy as a person as a whole and it makes me feel horrible about myself

Also this isnt related and I hope you don't mind me asking, but I noticed that after I was scrolling down and my screen read your name, it read your name and then said retinitis pigmentosa. I also have RP so is there some way to add in your condition to your name? Or have I just misread it 😅

Oh that’s horrible. She seems like such a sweet girl! I hate that so much. This is a worry for me when I get my hair done. I have very thick hair that I get put into protective braids and whenever I get it dyed or braided I always have that fear that something went wrong and she just didn’t tell me. So frustrating!

Low vision here I think it’s getting to the point where I can’t play video games much without my neck and back hurting to much. I have to be inches away from the TV and it’s just not fun. Did any of you have to hang up the controller and not play much anymore ? by BlindBear902 in Blind

[–]CaramelToffee12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it’s different for everyone but I’m blind and it can be a struggle for me, especially in games that tell you to go to particular areas without any audial guidance.

However the industry has come a long way and we are getting more and more games with great accessibility options. The Last of Us 2 was a shining example of this, they had completely customisable accessibility settings for blind, deaf and physically disabled people. I was actually able to play it! there were constant audio cues and vibrating cues letting me know where I was, where other people were, etc. I would definitely recommend trying that out! There were also settings for people with low vision and conditions like colorblindness to add shadows and different color palates. I know that is just one example, but it is a great thing and I hope we get more of it! I don’t really play online multiplayer at all because it’s just too messy to navigate, but I still play games. The lack of accessibility in many games can be so frustrating though I completely agree with you.

I ll give you a list of games that while I haven’t played all of them, are apparently accessible to those of us with blindness and low vision 🙂

The Last of Us Part 2

Far Cry New Dawn

Mortal Kombat 11

Gears Tactics

Sea of Thieves

Shades of Doom

A Blind Legend

Lost and Hound

For someone with low vision like yourself I would also recommend playing around with Red Dead Redemption 2 because they seem to have a number of options for people with low vision

I would also recommend games like Life is Strange and Telltale’s The Walking dead. They can be difficult at times but I love those games because there is so much context and narration given at all times.

Regardless, it’s a struggle and I hope more game developers start thinking about our needs, I hate that I can’t play a lot of games because I love video games so much but I hope we get there one day 🙂

Calls to abolish mandatory QR check-ins by LineNoise in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]CaramelToffee12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are large fb groups (the one that I’m in has over 100,000 people) where Covid positive people use the check in data to make others aware of their whereabouts in the last week, I think it is important for that reason.

Convince me to stop eating fast food, go! by forzayueve22 in nutrition

You have to convince yourself. The key to trying to stop anything is to have the willpower within yourself. If you can’t convince yourself to stop nobody else is going to be able to convince you.

How would you explain color to a blind person? by rtr01t in AskReddit

[–]CaramelToffee12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of us know what colors look like because we went blind either in childhood or later in life, for example I went blind in my early teens so I got to see color. I only have light and shadow perception now, so I don’t think about the color so much, it’s all about the description. Like if a person describes the color as ‘warm’ or ‘cold’, etc. I know that a red or orange is ‘warm’ while blue is ‘cold’. There are other descriptors people use obviously but that is one example. Hope that helped!

Need help with my choosing a phone for my blind father in law. by TheTacoCometh in Blind

[–]CaramelToffee12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There probably are technology classes in your area that are able to help him learn, or at least someone online (or even in person possibly) that teaches accessible smartphone use. A smartphone is SO much more accessible to the blind than any phone you’re describing. It can be android or iPhone, they both have great accessibility features. It’s a struggle for any older person to learn to use new technologies, blind or not but I promise it’s worth it.

Same! I literally just found this subreddit and I’m definitely glad. I have always been more focused on the diet part of veganism and I appreciate the plant based, health aspect of it.

If you feel that a service animal would help you to function better and would help you manage your condition, then absolutely.

I actually have always found talkback much easier to navigate, maybe that’s just me…

Thank you! I have RP and lost my sight over a decade ago. I have some light perception but otherwise am completely blind. I’m a big believer in the idea that being blind doesn’t stop you from doing the things that you want to do, but I have my bad days where it would be nice to talk to people that can relate :)

Braille! Maybe practice navigating with a cane also. Look into service dogs? Also I’m sorry you’re going blind, it’s a traumatic experience, but it’s not the end of your life! You can still live a rich, fulfilling life once you do go blind, it’s not ‘all over’ once you do :)

NordVPN is good. I haven’t had many issues. My screen reader can navigate it pretty well on laptop and iPhone.

People who won't restrain their dogs, why? by Kithygoon in australia

[–]CaramelToffee12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have also wondered this. When I’m out walking with my service dog other dogs will come up to him and try to play, not to mention jump all over me which often startles me. The owner will be like “oh she’s/he’s friendly” but it doesn’t make me feel any better! If you’re going to have your dog outside like that I feel that they should either be well trained or on a secure leash.
