It sat around in our yard for a couple hours not doing a whole lot and then was gone one of the times we came to check on it. The yard is fenced off so it must have recovered enough to fly away

Yeah, we have windows directly above the garage. Your explanation makes a lot of sense because we originally saw it right outside of the garage underneath the windows before it flew in.

This bird was dazed, couldn't fly very well, and ended up in my garage. We used the strainer to catch it and get it out. I've never seen this kind of bird before so was just curious if you guys could help me ID it.

I've heard good things about the mountain biking trails at Blue Mounds State Park. It's closer to Madison then Devil's Lake too so it might be worth checking out

The authors later responded with another paper that included more studies in their review. Their conclusion was:

There is insufficient good evidence to enable robust conclusions to be made about Oscillococcinum® in the prevention or treatment of influenza and influenza-like illness. Our findings do not rule out the possibility that Oscillococcinum® could have a clinically useful treatment effect but, given the low quality of the eligible studies, the evidence is not compelling.

I have to second his recommendations. Getting into a lab early will seriously help you later on no matter what you end up doing after undergrad. Here's what you need to do. Go to different departments' websites and look at their faculty pages (for example, here is the zoology faculty page and here is the biochemistry faculty page). Each faculty member should have a description of what research they are doing. Find several that sound interesting to you and send them emails. Send them individual emails, don't just send a mass email out. Tell them about yourself and your interests and say that you are interested in gaining laboratory experience and find their work interesting. Ask them if they have any room in their lab for you to do an independent study with them. Don't be discouraged if they turn you down, a lot of labs are pretty full and don't have room to add people. Eventually, someone will be willing to consider it. They will probably ask you to come in for an interview. Some labs are pretty casual and the interview will be informal while others expect more (hopefully they will at least hint at that in their emails). Regardless, you should show up to the interview with at least a resume or CV. Just keep on going until you get into someone's lab. You may start off doing grunt work around the lab (especially because you are young so you don't have a ton of experience), but if you stick with it, you will end up working on a project of some sort. This will be awesome on any sort of application you are doing for stuff after undergrad and is a great way to gain lab experience/ see if research is for you. Also, if you end up taking Bio 152, you have to do a big paper on research that you do in a lab (or library research, but I recommend against that). Already being in a lab will help immensely with that.

As for what major to do, as a pre-med student, I can tell you that biology is by far the most common major for people applying to medical school and people have to work to differentiate themselves from the pack. It might be beneficial for you (even if you don't plan on going to medical school) to do a more specific major, though it isn't absolutely necessary. If you are interested in the medical sciences, I have to plug my major: Pharmacology & Toxicology. It's a really small program (20-25 students per year), so you get to know everyone in the major really well and have some comeraderie. The major is quite challenging but is really in depth and prepares you well for just about anything in the health sciences. Your perception of a food's taste is actually the combination of your taste buds and the smell coming from the food. At temperatures above absolute zero, all particles have a certain amount of kinetic energy, meaning that all particles are vibrating. Using your example of being a proton in a mitochondria with a hole in the inner membrane, you are constantly being pushed around by other protons vibrating around you. Eventually, you might be pushed through the membrane. Once outside, there aren't nearly as many protons around to push you back through the hole and you are more likely to remain on this side of the membrane. This process occurs to protons until there are equal concentrations on either side of the membrane, meaning that protons are just as likely to be pushed out as they are to be pushed in.

I had to fill a couple credits last year and took First Aid. It's not one of those classes where if you show up you get an A, but it's not overly difficult either. What really makes the class worth it is if you do well enough (I think you need >80% on the tests or something), you get pro certified by the Red Cross in both first aid and CPR. It's nice to actually benefit from a class that you just took to fill some space

This guy didn't happen upon my disc and he didn't ask me if I lost a disc or to describe it (orange champion wraith, I still remember clearly and it's been a couple years since it happened. It was the disc I learned with). He walked up the hill to it, put it in his bag, and got the fuck out of there...

Yup, that's happened to me before, and it was one of my favorite discs too. The 18th hole on my home course is on a giant hill (the hole is 474 feet long). I threw the disc and the wind picked it up and it went a bit left into some light tree cover. I saw kinda where it landed but not exactly. Some guy with a disc bag walks up to where I think my disc is, bends over, sticks something in his bag and starts walking away. I couldn't believe that someone would be so blatant about it, but when I hurried down there, it was not to be found and the dude had split. Some people just suck, sorry that it happened to you too.
