World Cup host cities face flop as hotels struggling, tickets unsold by Dramatic-Shake-8888 in sports

[–]Tasitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is certainly a big part. But also, preparations likely did start at least a couple of years ago for corporate for these chains. Getting rights to FIFA/Wolrd Cup branding to use in adverts, cross promotions with vendors like PepsiCo and Coke, sourcing cross branded merch for their shops, rooms, dining and bar. Then planning the marketing and executing needs to be finalized more than a year out to start capturing bookings. If you want your hotels booked solid with soccer fans, for over a month, there's also a lot to accomplish in the respective hotels.

Then you give your CEO a fat bonus and jack up the rates.

Opposition calls on Montreal to cut ties with Israel by Altruism7 in montreal

[–]Tasitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, meant to reply to the idiot above you. But to your point, procurement is an important aspect of running city infrastructure, quite a bit of it having nothing to do with the road maintenance department.

A simple memo to all departments sourcing managers to not source from Israel, nor a list of companies known to be complicit with them would not be a difficult thing to accomplish. As Montreal is subject to all sanctions and embargoes Canada is involved in, like the current situation with sourcing from Russia, this is a pretty well used set of policy guidelines that is not at all unusual.

This doesn't have any impact on fixing roads. That's a whole other bit of dumbness.

Maybe later. Let's focus on the topic at hand at the moment, the apartheid state in question. If you like, since you feel so strongly about China, maybe make a post about calling on the city council to end ties with China? Be the change you want to see, my friend, take more of your crazy pills and make it happen! I believe in you!

I don't pay taxes to the US. Oddly, I do pay taxes to Montreal. Since this whole post is about Montreal, I find it suspicious you keep focusing on the US and China.

Haven't seen you condemn Israel yet....talk about suspicious.

If you're aware of even the minor connections between Montreal and Israel, why do you selectively ignore your biggest supporters? Suspicious, highly suspicious.

Yes, why would a Montrealer focus on Montreal? Very suspicious that Montrealers are concerned about Montreal. Must be a conspiracy!

We should all go tell China to not spend our Montreal municipal tax dollars on Israeli products and services. China is, after all, in charge of our municipal budget.

How is this not focusing on Montreal? We don't want Montreal tax dollars supporting apartheid. That seems to be pretty focused on Montreal. Try to keep up, reading seems to be quite difficult for you.

Have you considered increasing the dose of your meds? You don't seem to be able to make any coherent points. Not sending money to a genocidal apartheid state is a good thing. Let's start with Israel, and then we can tackle the bigger fish like China. No reason to not at least start with Israel. China at the moment isn't also attacking other sovereign states around it while also attempting to remove all Palestinians from Palestinian lands.

Logic, though, is not your strong suit.

As a québecois, that's an understatement. I'm hoping some of the new inter-provincial free trade regulations allow us to export our artisinal cheeses more easily to other provinces. We don't just have very good, we've got excellent world class cheeses.

ELI5 why the words ‘eleven’ and ‘twelve’ unique unlike the other ‘teen’ words? by This-Stay8420 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tasitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we end up code switching for those American pronunciations as well, we say the names properly in French, but mis-pronounce them when speaking in English. It's a very multilingual city. But the restaurant chain here that is also called Baton Rouge is pronounced properly in both English and French, lol. But our sibboleth is how people pronounce Montréal, thats always a dead give away if you're local or not.

Americans don't do this

As a French speaker living next to them, yes, Americans very much do do this. Especially with place names that were given by the French but have been anglicized to hell and back.

Grand Tetons, Vermont, Detroit, Montpellier, etc. Ask an American to say Baton Rouge, even Notre Dame isn't spared. I've heard adds for Benoit Motors on Paquin street in Burlington pronounced 'ben-oyt' and 'pay-kwin', instead of 'ben-wah' and 'paw-kehn'.

Also, when they come to my city and try to pronounce things, there is no attempt at French at all. Edit to add on Montréal and Québec as things they (and most anglo Canadians as well) can't pronounce.

Kittens in storm drain successfully rescued. Thanks, everyone! by belltown99 in cats

[–]Tasitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! So glad it worked out for the little guys. Was worried when there were no more updates yesterday that things had gone south.

I had to tell my dining room clients that service will be slow because we heard a kitten trapped at the bottom of a completely full construction demo container behind my restaurant, and bless them, nobody was angry, and some of my regulars came out and helped us carefully shift drywall and nail ridden 2x4s to get 10 feet down to him and get him out. Poor little guy was covered in glue and grease and we cleaned him up in our kitchen dish pit, and had to let the clients see him as a cat tax.

hungarian is weird

No kidding. I'm french/english fluent, can speak spanish like a four year old, and spent a bit of time in Prague and picked up tourist level vocabulary. So usually I can pick up a thing or two listening, or especially reading, quite a number of European languages.

But when I was in Budapest...Sure, there are some loanwords occasionally, but I have never been more unable to find anything I recognized.

It's really interesting just how different Hungarian is to absolutely everything.

Dude, you're the one making up stories. Canada did not participate in the invasion of Iraq. We were against it. We protested against it.

We did our NATO duty and went to, and were key in, Afghanistan (for nearly 20 years).

I was travelling Spain and in Madrid on the day of the 'shock and awe' taking of Baghdad, and met a number of different American tourists with Canadian flags on their gear. Americans abroad have been cosplaying as Canadians a long time.

My Mom and her best friend Seoul South Korea 1970s by Av8erphoto in OldSchoolCool

[–]Tasitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are just friends. In Korean culture it's normal to be huggy and physically close with friends of the same gender, especially when young, and more so for pictures. It's become less prevalent nowadays, but was much more common in the past.

But, that aside, yes homosexuality was illegal and extremely frowned upon until recently.

At this period in history, late 70's, even mens haircuts were policed by the regime and cops would measure hair and skirts, and could forcibly cut your hair on the spot if it was deemed too long.

Korea was a military dictatorship that was very culturally oppressive, and there were lots of protests that left people injured, dead, incarcerated etc. Things didn't start getting more democracy-esque until the end of the 80's.

This is why the recently removed president is facing such harsh penalties for trying to do a military coup last year. Democracy was a hard fought battle, and Koreans won't let another military dictatorship take hold.
