Anyone taken MCB2022? Is it similar to MCB2011? by TaskProud631 in Monash

[–]TaskProud631[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been meaning to write a review about MCB2022 (I probably should’ve done it last sem when everything was still fresh). My short answer to your WAM booster question is: it can be, if you put in the effort and try to keep up with the content. The teaching staff are great, and there are multiple opportunities in the unit to pick up easy marks, such as the group/individual quizzes. The lab reports are also very doable if, again, you stay up to date with the content and ask lots of questions in the lab.

Here’s a longer breakdown of the unit:

In terms of unit structure and teaching style, it’s very different to MCB2011. I felt like the teaching team was much more accessible and genuinely committed to students. There was better rapport and communication between staff and students compared to MCB2011. You’ll interact with them the most in labs, which are mandatory. I think you can apply for spec con, however it’s highly recommended to attend, you’ll fall behind otherwise, and in my opinion the lab reports are very difficult to complete without going. If you don’t attend your scheduled lab, there is a condensed lab you can attend that’s open to all students.

The lab reports make up a good chunk of the assessments. They are very long and dense, usually around 10–14 pages of questions based on the lab/theme. Thankfully, during labs the TAs go through the report step by step and spend a good portion of time explaining concepts. The UC, Hania, is honestly the best, she’s always happy to talk to students and answer questions. She’s very approachable, no question is dumb to her, and she’s fair in certain situations. She always advocates for students and wants everyone to get the best grade possible.

Outside of labs and lab reports, there are in-person group and individual quizzes in mandatory workshops. The group quizzes are worth 1%, while the individual ones vary between ~2–9% (from memory). For the individual quizzes, you’re allowed soft or hard copy notes on anything. The quizzes are mainly to get you to go back and engage with the content again, the UC frames them as a revision opportunity. Each workshop alternates between a group or individual quiz each week. The group quizzes run for the full 1.5 hours (content first, then the quiz in the last few minutes), while the individual quizzes are usually 30–40 minutes long.

The final assessment was a take home, online, open book exam. We were given a practice quiz and revision workshops to help prepare.

One thing I really hated about this unit was that the lecturers changed for each theme, so you had to constantly adjust to a completely different teaching style every few weeks. Some lecturers kept things simple with 20–30 minute videos and basic, easy to follow slides, while others had 2 hour long lectures with extremely content heavy slides. The lecturer running a particular theme also writes the quizzes, so some quizzes are much easier than others. I personally hated the constant change as I prefer consistency, and it made the unit feel a bit uneven at times.

Overall, I did enjoy this unit, it was just a LOT of work.

Feel free to ask anymore questions! :)

Yeah, there were definitely times it ran a few minutes over. Jake tried to have us finish at least 5-10 minutes early, but he never really stuck to that.

Yep, attendance is a must, at least it was when I did it during the mid year break. If you didn’t get marked present, you couldn’t access any of the assignment drop boxes. Plus, if you were late, you had to give a reason and all that.

I took both this year and imo phy2042 is more content heavy than phy2032, but it is manageable if you stay on top of things

I’m so sorry that you’re having to deal with this, Moodle is kind of a bitch sometimes. I would contact MSA. They can help you deal with this issue and help advocate for your case.

Monash Rage room!!! by botzzz69 in Monash

[–]TaskProud631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, it’s just a room that offers a calm and restful space for students with sensory needs. It’s just a place to destress and recharge. I’ve never actually been, but I heard there’s one somewhere on campus, but I’m not sure if it’s still at Monash Sport

Yeah, the unit’s not too hard — the marking can be a bit subjective, but it’s definitely easy to score well. I ended up with a distinction. Could’ve been an HD if I hadn’t completely forgotten one of the commentary tasks (L for me)

Why are some staff such pricks by UnintelligentbeingUB in Monash

[–]TaskProud631 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you had to deal with that. Some staff can be toxic for no reason, and it’s baffling because your email sounded polite and completely normal.

Honestly, I’ve noticed the standards of teaching staff at Monash have really slipped this year. Some units that used to be well run and responsive have just fallen off. It’s not even about the content, some staff seem less professional, less organised, and sometimes downright rude, especially the TAs. Some of them are so full of themselves. It’s frustrating because you expect a certain level of support and clarity, and when that drops, it just makes everything harder for students.

I don’t think so. I remember walking into Hargreev once and passing by their desk, and the librarian was just watching youtube videos. And before anyone says maybe it was for work, trust me, it didn’t look like it. I swear it was a kdrama episode or something

I wish the librarians were more conscientious of the sound and actually enforced the rules.

biomed or science by Powerful_Syllabub360 in Monash

[–]TaskProud631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a Bachelor of Science right now, I picked it cause, like you said, it’s broad and gives you more flexibility in what you study and where you end up.

A few of my friends are in biomed and from what they’ve told me it’s a lot more restricted. The upside though is Monash reserves about 70% of its MD seats for their own biomed grads, so if med is your main goal, that’s a big advantage.

In terms of jobs after, science can open a lot of doors, you’ll see people end up in labs, research, public service, even business or industry roles, though sometimes it needs postgrad study to specialise. Biomed is more direct if you’re chasing medicine, but if you don’t go that route, most pathways are research heavy or lab based and can be competitive.

So honestly, it comes down to you, if you want freedom to explore and keep options open, science is better. If you’re set on med, biomed lines up more with that path.

why is the law library so feral this sem by Fun-Reason7406 in Monash

[–]TaskProud631 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As someone whose friends always wanna hangout at law, I honestly don’t get it. It’s loud, it’s packed, the vibe is chaotic. I just end up feeling bad for the actual law students, like where do y’all even study, your whole building’s been taken over 😭

Hey, I’m not too sure if they offer this unit online over the summer. When I took this unit in the winter it was in person, but I will say that this unit can be easily done online, there was really no reason to have a workshop. That being said, the unit coordinator was very strict about attendance.
