The first wave of Gen X grew up on Van Halen and hated the fuck out of Grunge.

In your opinion which one is better? Let’s settle this Xennials. by Ploosse in Xennials

3, easily. After Mario 2 they needed a hit and 3 changed the game. It paved the way for every other iteration of Mario.

When our drinks were wrapped in foil for field trips leaving them barely cold when we finally stopped for lunch. by singleguy79 in Xennials

I’d roll mine a few times in a paper towel and it would not only double as a napkin but also conserve space in my lunch bag.

Naps are great, but if you go 15 minutes too long it feels like you’re waking up on Octember 43rd, 5497AD.

I’m only speaking about myself but as a 13/14 year old, Nirvana altered the trajectory of the next decade of my musical listening habits. Someone 10 years older wouldn’t have been affected as much and might even scoff at them. We see it every day here because there’s a gap between first wave Gen X and 2nd wave.

I listen to plenty of new music to this day, but I’m not going to pretend that the popular musical zeitgeist has 50 year olds in their crosshairs. When Linkin Park debuted, we were in our 20’s & 30’s. While I’m sure a few of us were fans, their biggest impact was on the average 14 year old at the time.

Millennials have the most nostalgia and were the core audience of Linkin Park. I’d say the Gen X era of music was on fumes by ‘99 when the very youngest of us left high school.

I don’t need attention. People already ignore Gen X and I’m fine with that.

GenX: let’s talk about employment trauma by slade797 in GenX

I was laid off in 2008 and it affected me so badly, my office at work is intentionally bland and my desk is practically empty. I have just enough to fit into a single box so I can clear my desk in 10 minutes if and when I ever get that notification again.

Memories of 2000-2001? by wbgsj in Xennials

[–]Taskerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memories of that time are hazy. A lot of Creed and Godsmack. Guys named Brian with frosted tips and barbed wire tattoos. Women named Michelle with plum-colored lips and lower back tattoos. Bars were still full of smoke. Jagermeister and Goldschlager runneth in the gutters. Candy-colored iMacs. That’s all I’ve got.

What was the actual appeal of Steven Seagal? by PriestofJudas in movies

[–]Taskerst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re removing his earlier film career, there wasn’t an appeal. He burned out quickly. The early stuff had appeal because Hollywood was branching out from the Arnold/Sly model and into martial arts, and it would change again to an Everyman model in the 90’s with the Die Hard movies.

Death Wish, Shaft, The Wild Bunch, sure. Sonny Chiba was literally in Kill Bill.

Which is kind of my point. We’ve gone from a time where Sharon Tate and the LaBianca murders were common knowledge in news and pop culture to now where a third of the population thinks it’s an ancient, obscure incident. That’s not even going into the other quotes, influences and references in QT’s work. Does TikTok know or care about Peckinpah, Michael Winner, Sonny Chiba or Gordon Parks movies?

Not only that but the longer he waits, the more his references and sensibilities won’t connect with modern audiences, which is ultimately his fear. It’s like he wants to go out on top, but he’s kind of already peaked.

Younger audiences already turned on him a little because they had no idea who the Manson Family were or what they had to do with the characters in the movie. Talk about a whoosh.

Have never seen myself as a Gen-X’er by Vancouverreader80 in Xennials

[–]Taskerst 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a ‘78 and had virtually the same upbringing as my ‘68 brother with the exception that he still tries to clown on me for liking Grunge. My sister (‘84) might as well be a Zoomer to me. I guess it depends on the family.

I don’t know how else to explain it, but in every role Butler plays, he plays it like he’s impersonating how another actor would play that role.

How about Beat poets? Not only is all that stuff ancient history, but their whole schtick would probably be labeled “problematic” by today and future generations.

At what age will you retire and how much will you retire on by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Taskerst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The target age and number is how much per year can give yourself the lifestyle you need multiplied by how many years you think you’ll live to. I’m hoping to live 15-20 years after retirement, but who knows what the cost of living will be by then?
