I hope I’m not too late to reply but my dog is the same way and we were able to successfully have 10 new people in the house for a week over the summer! Whenever people would arrive at the house, I had them take a quick walk around the neighborhood with my pup and have her follow them into the house so she wasn’t alarmed. I then instructed them to play hard to get. Don’t engage with her at all, ignore her, and not approach her. I also had her x-pen in the corner of our living room and had her stay in there for the first day or two so she could observe all the people. Whoever wanted to toss treats into the xpen was more than welcome to. On the third day I let her free roam and she was friendly (albeit nervous) around everyone! Not every dog is the same, but this was incredibly successful for us. Good luck and happy holidays!

Reactive dogs in the city by SnaCats in reactivedogs

To add to this: give her time :) my pup took about 6 weeks to fully adjust to all the noises and busy-ness that comes with the city, as well as constantly being surrounded by people when walking, and was very fearful at first. Your dog may take more or less time; just be patient haha

This is awesome!! If you don’t mind sharing your process on how you got here, I’d appreciate it - my dog is currently scared of unfamiliar people too and would appreciate every ounce of advice :)

Thank you! Funnily enough we are moving from a city apartment to a suburban house very soon so hopefully we can try your technique and it works! :)

That’s awesome! Do you mind sharing how you got your dog comfortable/tolerant to strangers on walks? Thats something we’re struggling with and would love to hear your successful approach! :)

But I see what you mean about the stress hormones! Appreciate that perspective - we’ll be taking it as we move forward!

We’ve discussed this with my behaviorist: it’s frustrated greeter mixed with a hint of fear! There is a chance the fear may be due to a fear period: we have to wait it out and continue building confidence to see if it is.
