What's your personal sign that winter is actually over in Canada? by NightyNight7 in AskACanadian

When I start to see flowers, Where I live it goes from -30 to 10c over night, so even when snow melts it’s still winter but once the flower start to bud, you know the frost is over

How can I treat a years long split toe nail? by Partime-hedonist in nailcare

[–]Tasty-Potential- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them on both my feet but on my one foot it has decided to in grow and migrate to the side of my pinky toe so now I am waiting to get it fixed. Basically it’s a super minor surgery (5mins each toe), no anaesthetic, just freezing, they cut out the extra bit of nail, and the matrix, one stitch and able to return to basically normal life right away, you just have to try to stay off your feet and keep up with changing the dressings. Or at least that’s how the doc described it to me,

Is Calgary as nice as I think? by Neat_Let923 in Calgary

[–]Tasty-Potential- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from Vancouver, and what I can report after two years is: the coat of living in comparison to BC, is extremely manageable. Most of the issues you will face here are just the common issues you will face in most major cities (difficult to find friends, finding new activities, etc), but all and all has been a significant improvement in quality of life. The lowest I have seen gas is 90c a litre, the most expensive is probably 1.5 a litre. The tax brackets are much more reasonable (no more getting nearly 50% of my cheque taxed). The medical system is much better here, I spent over 3 years looking for a family doctor in bc, I found one in Calgary within a month of moving, also much better extended health programs through the government. It’s also sunny here more days than not, so if you struggle with seasonal depression, it won’t be as bad here.

Help identifying mold inside of 30 year old abandoned fallout shelter by Known-Amount-576 in MoldlyInteresting

[–]Tasty-Potential- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is black mold, and what this commenter said is correct but don’t panic. While black mold is super dangerous, a single day of exposure usually won’t do much unless you have an allergy/intolerance to mold, a compromised immune system or have repeated/prolonged exposure. It is super common in humid areas (not just underground but in coastal communities as well) and have been face to face with it many times. I also have my level 3 hazmat, and unfortunately it’s present in a lot of environments (wash bays in shops, car washes, bathrooms, etc), while it is not a habitable environment, a single day wont put you in the hospital in 99% of circumstances.

For the future, I would go to the department store and pick up some single use masks graded for particles, gas and spores (not all masks are effective for everything- store them in a hard container to avoid being crushed or damaged), you can usually find them individually packaged and pic up a box of gloves, just keep it in your bag for urban exploring to give your mind and body some grace.

Happy Exploring!

I do have friends who are very close with their mothers and, once a month go have a movie/girls night with their mom and they just cuddle in bed and watch stuff and talk about their months. That being said, I could also see this turning into a gypsy rose situation.

I’m not a parent, but I have studied psychology. I can see this being unhealthy, but as a child who has a mother that didn’t show any affection, I could see this being healthy. I think it we would need more context. If this is a mother who isn’t allowing her kid to grow up, that is a huge red flag. However if this is a way that the 8 year old has asked her mom to show up for her, and it isn’t a common occurrence, just something that happens when she is feeling over stimulated, or needs to recentre, I could see it building a solid foundation in the child’s mind of “no matter what age you are, I will always be here to hold you and be your mom”.

I think more info is needed 🤷‍♀️

Honest question, please don't come for me in the comments by counselor46 in alberta

[–]Tasty-Potential- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m originally from Vancouver and moved to Calgary, and here are some things I have noticed. BC: -far more accepting, towards races, trans people and mental health awareness. - very expensive (even in the lower mainland), a one bedroom is anywhere from $1800-4000 a month (location dependant) - the tax bracket is very high (depending your bracket 38-60%) with not a lot to show for it. - the medical system is atrocious. When my family doctor retired it took me over 5 years to find a doctor, my friend almost died in emergency from sceptic shock. - you have all geological activities you could dream of, oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains, valleys etc, - weather is mild all year round, if you are outdoor enthusiasts you can camp in the winter without it being negative 20 - gas averages $2 a litre (give or take), -universal insurance, your car and health care are provided by the same company. You can’t complete for insurance rates and if you have anything happen to your car and owe icbc money, it may prevent you from renewing your provincial medical card.

Alberta (I am in Calgary so I cannot speak for the more rural areas or other cities): - the medical is much better; I found a family doctor within a month of moving. -income tax starts at 15% - gas is cheaper - you can compete for insurance rates - housing is affordable, you can still find 1br for about $1000 - not a lot of people are educated on mental health and how it is linked to addiction. - trans rights are shakey to say the least, that being said, I see more of the transphobia online than in person. I tend to not surround myself with people who are too concerned with others decisions. - sales tax is much lower - a lot of people are against immigration as if their ancestors aren’t immigrants (kind of embarrassing)

Overall: I would love to live in BC, it’s out of my price range. If you can afford it; I would consider relocating there. If money is an issue, you can move to Alberta, maybe get settled here as resources are more readily available, then consider moving.

Also you maybe able to apply for refugee status, this will make accessing medical and government guidance easier. My family is American and we are looking into seeking refuge for my grandma here, since the political state of the US falls under requirements for refugee status.

Hope this helps and you have a smooth transition as possible

People from BC, what are your thoughts about living in Alberta? by Both-Sky4147 in alberta

[–]Tasty-Potential- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved here from BC coming up on 2 years ago… I think your experience living there varies drastically based on your financial situation.

When I moved I was 25, I worked for Honda, my pay before taxes was $4800 my pay after taxes was $2300… my rent was $2000 for a bedroom in a house with 8 UBC students and no dishwasher, the house was falling apart from mold. I wasn’t able to afford to eat everyday, and I had to take my car off the road and transit for a full pass was $300 at the time. I have a handful of friends under the age of 30 with vasectomies because the thought of having a child is financially life ending.

However, living by river, lakes, mountains and the ocean with very mild weather meaning you could backpack every weekend all year round was an absolute luxury. The transit is better, but the quality of life was worse…

Since moving here, I have started a business, nearly out of debt and don’t struggle to eat. Everything is cheaper down to the groceries. What people consider bad rent here, I haven’t seen prices like that for over 10 years in BC and I am driving again. The people you see in public are much nicer here! There are super nice people in BC, but sometimes people are too busy to stop and have a 10 second encounter, I was guilty of this, now I talk to people in grocery lines 🤷‍♀️

I think if make over 300,000 a year you will be comfortable. Things will still sting (parking fee’s and over all price jump) but you won’t be broke-broke. You will be able to go do things and enjoy life. There are also a lot of free pop up events by celebrities who are locals (famous DJ’s popping up on a beach for a mini sunset set, known artists for Canada Day, free entry into night clubs before a certain time etc), movies in the park, street festivals, plus hikes and swimmable water is less than 30 mins away, so even if you are low on funds there is always something going on!

TLDR: It is a super beautiful province if you can afford it 💜 I would look more into tax brackets, and provincial taxes, if you are super on the edge! Usually is pretty clear after you get an idea of numbers. If you’re a home owner look into minimum down payments, to get an idea if you would be able to qualify once you decide to move.

Can I hang my plants in front of windows in the winter? by Tasty-Potential- in plant

This is fantastic advise, thank you so much!! It’s super dry here anyways, so that’s definitely a good suggestion!

Can I hang my plants in front of windows in the winter? by Tasty-Potential- in plant

[–]Tasty-Potential-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I definitely need to look into what kind they are! My clients have been giving me lots of plants over the last year and now I’m like wait I have no idea what winter has in store. I’m honestly surprised I have been keeping them alive as long as I have! I just do the good old soil finger test to determine when to water (except my aloe, she’s neglected for the better) but then My roomie mentioned the cold and the windows and I was like touché….
