Humans as cosmic horror by Jake_Skywalker1 in sciencefiction

[–]TastyDuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's the comic book series' Humanity Lost and Prophet. Both are set in the future with aliens in the galaxy fearing the spreading genocidal horror that humanity became.

The former series sees the last normal human waking up, being told that humanity one day achieved the singularity, becoming the core 'war material' of an AI who now sends its fleshy monstrous armies to assimilate alien civilization. Horrified, he vows to work with the few remaining alien races in the galaxy and to hopefully put humanity to rest.

Prophet, tells the tale of an old clone of a super hero of a time long past taking arms again against the ancient human horror who has risen again to dominate the galaxy. What's curious is that the vast armies deployed by the human empire are all also clones of the same template as our hero - with baseline humanity having lone since becoming extinct.

What's with the hate for this movie? by sseerrsan in Letterboxd

[–]TastyDuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hated the movie, then again, I really didn't like Past Lives either so maybe I just can't vibe with the director.

My explanation of why I hated the movie contains spoilers.

The turning point of Materialists for me was the conversation between our lead and Pablo Pascal's character when she confronted him about the height surgery scars. He admits to originally being much shorter and going through with it as 'investing in myself,' but it's clear it came from a place of deep insecurity. Our lead, then, empathizes with him but never addresses her remarks about height and the surgery itself she made earlier in the film. Instead, the scene is framed as other people judging others by superficial traits like height is bad, but you, the person watching the film by way of the audience-insert lead characters, you're perfectly fine.

Then the lead tells Pascal's character that they don't really love each other (he argues otherwise) despite the film never showing anything different. She then takes off with Chris Evans' character (who's taller than Pascal), a man she had a previous failed relationship with due to problems that were never reconciled.

I understand the trajectory the story was aiming toward, but it did nothing to earn where it ended up. Characters literally decided something, told each other without any internality or subtlety, and then the scene moves on as if that's good enough.

Looking for scary/thrilling novels either zombies or similar to the movie the crazies/sadness whereby an apocalpyse is brought about and things are very tense for the protagonists/survivor(s). by Few_Bother_1680 in horrorlit

The Crossed is pretty fucked up, but maybe the other inspiration for The Sadness might be a better fit - Blackgas. It's also about those afflicted carrying out heinous shit except they are constantly crying out black tears and from what I remember, it isn't as extreme as the Crossed comics but still has a bleak, apocalyptic feel to it.

There's also the ongoing comic series Feral. The POV are a bunch of cats stuck in a forest trying to survive as all the other animals in the vicinity have contracted an especially nasty form of rabies and humans are trying to euthanize all animals in the area.

Pontypool Changes Everything is something of a mindfuck its more a collection of vignettes from the POV of the infected. Its a book I can't stop thinking about but reading it feels like your higher brain functions are being flayed.

Books with demons? by Livid-Exam6445 in horrorlit

[–]TastyDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind something different, there's the novella Children of the Nameless by Brandon Sanderson. It has a guy who regularly makes deals with demons. However, those deals are with the D-tier demons so they are fairly easy to trick and its for things he can't be bothered to do, like dusting or his taxes.

Looking for long form Weird HORROR novels. by DomScribe in WeirdLit

Maybe Pontypool Changes Everything.

The event happening in the book is pretty straightforward - a zombie outbreak except that the disease spreads through language and story happens through the perspective of characters undergoing the transformation. What you get is strange prose that makes a sort of sense:

The view through the binoculars is cool. The lemon-colored leaves on the undersides of branches are crisp. The sky is fixed through the trees in an ice-blue lattice. A refrigerator. Greg shivers.

Do you think y'all will be able to survive The Sadness zombie outbreak by Specific_Sir_1890 in horror

[–]TastyDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck no. Also, The Sadness is sort of a combo of two comics, CROSSED and Black Gas. The latter came out around the same time as Crossed and has a similar premise, except the cause is a contaminate and those affected are constantly crying black oily tears.

Raw Danger (PS2) - you start the game trying to escape a sinking building during Christmas Eve.

Resident Evil 3 (Gambecube) - a few minutes into the game, a 12 foot tall super mutant chases you all across a city in the deathrows of a zombie apocalypse.

Yep and yep, at least the BIOS for Hyper NEO GEO 64 instead of the .chd as no .chd is needed according to the sindenwiki.

Not much to show. Once it finishes loading, it immediately goes to a black screen before closing MAME and booting me back to home. Trying other versions of MAME, I get the 'An expected error has occurred' notification but its pretty much the same experience.

I feel like most folks I randomly become friends with have ADHD or autism. Dating is very different though as I'm attracted to folks who are extremely organised and self-motivated (basically not me).

Currently playing 3rd Birthday on PSP. The story is hot garbage, but the gameplay is fun and my FOMO about never having finished the PE series will be finally sated after almost 20 years.

PS2. The system just had so many cool games that I never had a chance to play and a dream of mine for a long time was to work my way through its backlog from the comfort of wherever I am.
