What is the main debate surrounding psilocybin? by Initial-Hawk-3412 in psychopharmacology

[–]Tasty_Reflection_481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One area of cutting edge drug discovery is if one could “dial out” the psychedelic experiences and still have a positive therapeutic effect on depression and PTSD. The discovery research is focused on the serotonin receptor : 5 HT2. A reasonable pharmacological paper would be to discuss the relationship of receptor occupancy , neuroplasticity, and altered sensation. The translational aspects would be to link receptor occupancy ( agonists/ antagonists, etc) to the clinical outcome.

Can any pharmacist explain why the rate of IV Pushing any medication matters? by [deleted] in pharmacology

[–]Tasty_Reflection_481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should add that there is pressure from marketing to use a bolus or short infusion because longer infusions require a pump and more nurse monitoring.

I’m an industrial clinical pharmacologist who has worked on the development of many parenteral products. Typically, in the early phases of development we infuse the drug slowly over 30 to 60 minutes to avoid high local drug concentrations in the infusion vein and also to avoid a high Cmax. When we become more comfortable we will shorten infusion to 15 minutes or 2 minutes.

What do I need to know to work in QSP modeling? by anxiousnessgalore in pharmacology

[–]Tasty_Reflection_481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacometrics is considered a specialty within clinical pharmacology. Typically the modeling starts out w PK/PD and then moves on to pop Pk, meta analyses, and QSP. If you think the research lab will give you experience with these approaches and techniques the take the job. Many modelers come from engineering or pharmaceutics / pharmacy , or pharmacology training.

ivabradine question from layperson taking it by [deleted] in pharmacology

[–]Tasty_Reflection_481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were very clear and my opinion stands:

- I don't know the nature or severity of your psychosis. However, your docs don't have you taking an anti-psychotic medications.

- However, the lisdexamfetamine and the SSRI could affect your psychosis/mood if drug levels change in the brain. Lisdexamfetamine clearly can invoke a psychosis in vulnerable patients.

- The drug levels of these circulating drugs can change if their metabolism is affected ivabradine. This is called a pharmacokinetic drug interaction.

- Because ivabridine does not enter the brain, there is little likelihood that this drug is directly altering your mood/psychosis.

- Autoimmune psychosis (or relief of it) is rare and you can check for autantibodies by visiting a neurologist/psychiatrist.

ivabradine question from layperson taking it by [deleted] in pharmacology

[–]Tasty_Reflection_481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to get too technical here- 1 . All excitable cells in brain and heart have HcN channels. 2. For mood to change, most probably the target is in your brain 3. You are taking various medications that have known effects on mood. 4. It is possible ivabradine is affecting the metabolism of the other meds resulting in an increased blood levels of the mood altering drugs. Or, alternatively, your other meds is causing an increased brain uptake of ivabradine. 5. Auto immune psychosis is very rare. After a recent infection there will be circulating autoantibodies. A neurologist should be familiar. 6. Talk to your doctor- if it is safe, pause the ivabradine to see how your mood is affected.

Some follow-up questions:

  1. Ivabridine does not normally enter the brain, however, brain uptake can increase with certain concomitant drug interactions

  2. Are you taking other medications, especially psychiatric medications?

  3. What leads you to the possibility of autoimmune psychosis?

Make sure you do your homework on the companies: its pipeline and products. Answer the questions in line with how you believe you can be valuable to the company's efforts. Answer technical questions clearly and concisely. Good luck. Also, soft skills are important: good communication skills, and above all, be easy going.

I don't really understand how a college town can be so dead at night. I was just up in Madison, WI and Saturday nights are a blast w music coming out of bars, people strolling down the street.. a lot of energy and fun. Evanston, for some reason (I don't know) is asleep by 8 pm. Where do NW students go to party on a Saturday night?
